I dont know why, but it’s a pain in the ass for me to find vinyl dye anywhere. Home Depot doesn’t have it, and the autoshops here in Salt Lake City only have black.
Anyone know where I can maybe find some damn Rustoleum Vinyl Fabric?
you can try looking for it online ive been looking for some too and there is alot of online vendors
Do you have Naapa, Autozone, or Carquest in Utah? I’m in Colorado and I’ve gotten several colors of Duplicolor vinyl and fabric from these places. Didn’t have any trouble at all.
is duplicolor a good brand for vinyl/ fabric color?
I have had great results. Very easy application and even color with no sanding or top coat at all. Only a few colors, but that’s the only complaint I have.
Alright cool im gonna get some when i start my project they do have blue right? like a blue to match obsf-30 blue buttons
It’s darker, but should look nice. If you have your TE open, it’s exactly the same color as the blue wires that connect to the L2 button.
Again went with Dupli-Color, this time desert sand. I took what I learned and even the spraying turned out better.
Blue Dulpi-color vinyl dye. It’s great stuff. Goes on fast in a few coats and dries quick. Only had to sand once and that was from my own mistake (getting some debris on the stick). I just wish it was in more colors.
I like the blue Dupli-Color. I might have to toss that on a stick eventually.
I got lazy so I have a run in my Rustoleum Vinyl and Fabric paint job
Will this actually disappear over time, or are people just saying that? I don’t see that anywhere on the can.
EDIT: I just sanded it down and painted it again. Now it looks great!
I went the duplicolor red route and was not very impressed with the results (I made lots of mistakes)
I have a fightstick SE, would i be able to remove it easily and start over?
One route I was looking at was using Goo Gone to remove the paint, but is this potentially damaging to the plastic?
I would NOT use any chemicals to remove the dye, just in case. Not to mention, with the dye it would most likely not work very well.
Get some 600 or 1000 grit WET sandpaper and use that slowly with a little water until the surface is smooth again. You don’t need to remove all the dye. My blue shown above was white, then brown, then blue with no primer in between. If you are going to do something besides red, sand it down and do several coats of white for an even surface.
When you repaint it GO SLOW (even with the dye). Move the can evenly about 10 inches from the target and constantly move the can to make sure it’s even. Do not stop moving when painting or it will quickly saturate the plastic. It will take 5-6 coats with the dye to have a nice even color, and you can gently sand between coats if you get imperfections or bumps.
Most imperfections in paint jobs are going to be from your impatience or debris and dust accumulating on the project between coats. Grab some tack cloth at your local hardware store to remove dust if you work are is dusty.
Hope some of these pointers help out on your next try.
The main problem I ran into this was the paint didn’t dry long enough. I left it for a couple days, but I think it takes a week to fully cure. I would wait the full 7 days, but I got impatient. I painted one white and one all black. The all white started rubbing off by the palm area.
quick question… I want to send the side pieces and bezel off my TE to get painted with some special paint. Am I able to put it back together and still play normally??
I’ve heard some people use a clear coat after doing the vinyl dye job to protect it and give it a glossy look. I was thinking about it- just wondering if anyone else here has done it and can share their results, and what product they used.
I purchased Rust-oleum all surface paint (satin black color). That’s completely different from Vinyl dye isn’t it? I’m completely new to this and I don’t know what I’m doing.
Should I try to return this spray paint and look for vinyl dye at an autoparts store (I bought my paint at Home Depot) or will this work (I’m just painting the Bezel black)? Thanks for your time.
I would say any clear gloss topcoat/enamel spray would work fine (Rustoleum, Krylon). Keep in mind that if you use a topcoat you would need to sand it away in order to use vinyl dye again (if you change colors for instance).
I would not use the paint if you have an auto store anyplace around you. Pick up some black Dupli-color vinyl and fabric paint. It’s a lot more forgiving and lets you skip primer and topcoat.
