Painting the Fightstick (With Krylon or Vinyl Dye)

So its been about 3 days since I painted my stick and the results aren’t the greatest. I used rustoleum vinyl dye to paint my te s and there are some areas that came out perfect and other areas that look like this

Is there a way I can get rid of the drips? Originally I thought that it would seep in to the plastic if i waited long enough, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. Ive tried sanding down over the drips but it I did to much and now i need to repaint the sides again. Really the only thing I did for prep work was clean off the case. Should i have sanded the sides down as well? That could explain why the sides don’t feel as good as the front and back of the stick, but I could be just impatient for waiting for the dye to seep in.

well for one thing its not the product you are using is not vinyl dye its COATING so there will be no seeping you have to sand it down most use people use VHT vinyl dye or PLASTI-KOTE

Rustoleum isn’t Vinyl Dye. It’s just a more uh, user friendly paint. Same with Plasti-Kote, and Duplicolor Vinyl Coating. VHT is like, the last dye that we know of and even these days it’s questionable. You’re just better off sanding everything down to the plastic, priming, painting, and clear coating.

I love VHT vinyl dye as long as you do it right I have never seen anything work as well but I stop recommending any dyes to people. They always figure out a way to fuck it up. I also like PLASTI-KOTE in most colors (no glosses) some claim its not dye but from what I’ve read it is and it has the same odor as other vinyl dyes very different from standard paint. I know most would think thats irrelevant but it has to do with the composition of it.

Right now I’m currently painting a case. I’m work logging it step by step (not the sanding and shit, just the painting) and I’ll post it up. Using regular paints and poly coatings.

Paint works very well. You just have to do it right, LIGHT coats are key. No runs, just awesome looking paint.

Well i guess I messed up then. Its a shame because some of the areas look pretty good so I assumed It was just user error on my end. Since I know that it is it isn’t a true vinyl dye is it possible to sand it down and get a proper vinyl dye, or am I better off just doing a regular paint job? And what kind of sandpaper do you guys suggest? I feel like playing a little more with this rustoleum to see if I can get it to work. if I cant get it to look good then what’s the best way to start off fresh?

well my suggestion is brake fluid just don’t soak it it should strip all the paint off just wipe it on do a google search its what most people recommend for removing paint from plastic

You’ll have to follow Rosser’s suggestion for the brake fluid if you plan on continuing to use the vinyl paint. If you sand down to the plastic, you’ll end up scratching the surface and the vinyl paint won’t be thick enough to fully cover it up proper. If you do sand, you should probably get a high filler primer and then use a paint on top of that, then clear coat. I’d even suggest clear coating if you choose to still use the vinyl paint anyway, since it’s still just a coating around the plastic.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Has anyone actually found “true” vinyl dye for plastics? Reading the posts here and the reviews on Amazon, looks like even VHT vinyl dye isn’t even dye. So anywhere online where I can buy the “real stuff?”

Hello

Planning to paint my SFxT Pro FightStick, still haven’t decided on the color (maybe red) I was wondering if this is the thing that I’m looking for? http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/vinyldye/

Is wetsanding/sanding required at all for vinyl dye, and do I have to base coat the black arcade stick to some other color first before applying the vinyl dye?

Thanks

Sorry to bump an old thread, is this any good?

Go for it

Going to paint my SCV TE into steel grey.

as i understand, it’s supposed to be a vinyl paint, but is it as simple as it seems? i understand it “soaks” into the plastic. going to paint the whole case - how do i do with the steel panel at the bottom? i might aswell just ignore it though i guess

might go to a paint retailer to get some proper shit ,bringing a piece of my TE with me to see what they think is best suited. its 5c/~40f, so garage should be fine to paint in?

I’ve painted a super nintendo with krylon fusion. Works just like paint except with fewer coats in my opinion. The colder it is and the wetter it is outside the slower it’ll dry which means stuff can get stuck in it. Looks very nice when dry though. I’m planning on doing my TE2 in a couple weeks. The metal panel you can do with regular spraypaint and a primer but I wouldn’t advise it. If you really want it a color i’d try some vinyl sheets or maybe just buy a plexi for it and put art under it.

ilu

problem is that krylon fusion isn’t avaible here AFAIK, so going to order it from US amazon but the grey one is only in case of 6, lol. are there any other good vinyl dyes that you know of? couldnt find any plasti-kote either

i got a SCV te, which means that the side panels are in red and (or? maybe is the right word here, one side is red, other blue) blue. rest of the case is in a different kind of blue

will this affect anything? i understand that dye colours the plastic and that it can give a different kind of colour based on the layer, as much as that ive figured out through google - maybe enough coats would help that

i live in sweden so it’s pretty decent spring weather here so shouldnt be a problem. will be 60F/15C this weekend and doing it in the garage.

SCV TE has clear plastic.
I not sure how well clear ABS takes with paint.

I could be wrong, but I suggest to keep the TE body in its stock color

but its dye im thinking of, right?

if you’re4 right about this, primer and paint is the way to go?

Problem is finding legitimate dye. You can try the so called “dyes” out there, but most of them are cutting costs and using fine pigment paints instead.

ABS can be prepped with acetone to soften up the plastic and then sprayed with paint, but this is difficult to do.

do you know if there’s any legitimate dyes around?

im getting the feeling that i maybe should just leave the stick in its current shape :frowning:
