We do want people to pre-reg! We want as many people to sign up as possible.
The 5 will go a long ways to helping pay for the room, and we really appreciate anyone who pays the day of; but we didn’t plan the tournament to make people pay for a room. We planned it to have a badass fighting game tournament, so thats whats important.
Edit: I also think there is some merit to enforcing the $5 rule. If we tell people to pre-reg early to avoid $5 at the door, and then don’t enforce it, no one will bother with pre-reg next time. We lose credibility.
We are giving them two extra days grace to sign up on top of the 3 months they already had. After that, we have to be firm.
my suggestion for the prereg messaging is just take down the paypal option from the site, and say REGISTRATION IS OPEN: $15 AT THE DOOR
That makes it very clear that REGISTRATION is open.
Don’t talk about pre-reg anymore, it will only confuse things. REGISTRATION IS OPEN AT THE DOOR OF THE EVENT sounds welcoming, and won’t put anyone off. Don’t mention prereg in any way shape or form on the site. Remove every mention of it and you’ll be good.
Or “REGISTRATION AT THE DOOR IS $15. THIS INCLUDES THE $5 LATE REGISTRATION FEE.”
PNW got mentioned on the Stranger’s Blog (SLOG), and there was a gasp at the “ticket” price (basically because they don’t understand anything about tournaments, which is to be expected). On the other hand, we gained contact info for a Stranger guy for future events AND he might show up and cover it.
By the way, is there anyone signed up to take pictures yet? It might be good to send pics to Tips and Tricks/EGM or that kind of thing.
I would strongly suggest not saying “THIS INCLUDES THE $5 LATE REGISTRATION FEE”. That will only annoy people and/or put them off. Remove every mention of “extra fees” or “late fee”, and just post $15 at the door.
Wizards of the Coast discovered through market research that people don’t like drawbacks and much as bonuses. So don’t say people are getting punished for registering late. What happened is that people registering early got a $5 BONUS. But now that is gone and over with, no need to talk about it any more. Just say registration is $15.
How are we doing on power strips? I may bring two very small TVs (19" or so) that people can use for whatever. I won’t if that gets in the way, though, but – if it helps, they can be there.
I think we will handle it differently at the next tournament. I don’t want to not tell people that we are going to charge them at the door, but I understand the need for some PR work.
That would be really awesome if we got someone to show up and cover it.
My girlfriend just got a new amazing camera, and is itching to use it… She’s offered to help out in anyway she can, and I think asking her to use her new camera all day would be fine.
Tau (Little Bear) took pictures at the Random Select, so he may not mind taking them now. I will ask him.
So I talked my friend into going, so were going to be there for some casual matches, but we plan on doing other stuff while we’re in Seattle, so we won’t be staying the full time.
