I think that this problem is a very difficult one indeed. I think its best to just try, and possibly fail, at new things to see what attracts and keeps new players. Getting better is just up to the individual but an embarrassing spot on a tiered system would probably motivate some. Maybe a dedicated website or something…hard to say
More people? Sounds silly but “if you build it, they will come.”
The Newfoundland fighting game scene grew a lot when I just started hosting tournaments and actively promoting them. It was as simple as throwing up a few posters on campus and downtown (near comic book shops and stuff).
Lots of people showed up for one tournament and never came back but others became some of our most dedicated members (who were actually good at the game too). They just didn’t know we had a scene or where to start looking.
Additionally it’s way easier to show up to an event than a regular gathering. The HQ was great but my first time it was weird just walking into someones basement through the backdoor. A lot of people would probably just turn around and walk away.
Algonquin isn’t as intimidating but an actual event might attract more people for the first time. That’s the hope anyway.
I’m liking the idea of having posters and shit around campuses. First time I went to one of those bi-monthly captial ko tourneys was for a smash tournament (before I even touched ae) and the only reason I knew about it was cause there were posters all over ottawa u.
Anyhow. Enough philosophical shit. I’ll pontificate the fuck out of advertising more on the weekend.
Algonquin College Meet-Up
e206b (Possibly e209 Offices today). 5pm onwards. Student Commons.
Second Floor above the Starbucks.
Bring your controllers.
We have four monitors and two 360s, plus two CRTs. Bring what you need to play.
I wasn’t talking about AE or Marvel… I was talking about BlazBlue!!!
I usually only mm in TvC…(Unless it’s PTX)
Also I’m not really all too sure who everyone is on here (Please don’t be offended)
I’ll play you for $5 (I’m broke/cheap/feel like I’m being hustled) tonight in AE if that’s a game your into. I feel I could probably use some work on playing under pressure.
Hi I promise I’m a real person. Since I’m thinking about money matches… If your’re who I think you are, can I challenge your Ryu to a $5 money match in AE? and only if your tired…Your Sagat and reactions are too scary for an internet scrub like me.
I’m kinda all over the place here…
When I think of a strong scene that I’ve been to I think of Montreal’s Foonzos.
Things could have changed, or I could have had a skewed view of things, but from my time there what I saw is that they had some really cool stuff going on.
There they have some good players coming out on a regular basis multiple times a week. I feel this consistency really makes a difference for those people who show up regularly. Every player seemed to have a very solid understanding of how to play each match up. This is a problem I feel I’ve had coming from a community smaller than Ottawa. (The Honda match up still scares me) Though I don’t feel it’s as bad a problem for most of the players here. I feel the amount of people coming out on a regular basis makes the difference.
I feel that going to other towns lets us gauge ourselves against other communities and gives us a reason to strive to get better too. If anyone wants to go to foonzos for a day or weekend I’d like to be in. I don’t drive but can chip in gas money or we could bus it. I think if you book online in advance its about a $18 trip one way with greyhound. I think the venue fee is still that you need to buy drink/food at the venue. So its about $40 + food/bar stuff for a one day thing. Hotel cost added in for the weekend.
Overall I don’t think the Ottawa FGC is bad. I have a lot of fun each time I go to any meets. I just don’t feel like it’s very strong or as strong as it could be for a city of this size. I think the tournament/events, and advertising for them are great things that will help it grow.
Once I get a copy of UMvC3 I’m going to really put an effort towards it so I can come out to Feg Central when it’s happening. That being said I haven’t really had any luck finding it in any stores nearby so far. If a station opens up tonight I’m going to sit down and try some stuff.
I actually would like to help if possible. I’ll see you tonight.
I do have to say that aiming for a Montreal-style scene, at least when it comes to Air Dashers, is probably a good goal since they probably have the best Air Dasher scene in the country or something. When it comes to a place to aim for as an example with other games, the only place I really know anything about from close to firsthand is Toronto, and I’m not gonna pretend to know much.
Finally got kof 13 working on my pc again. something about stupid video microsoft codecs… if anyone wants to play online (via steam) over lunchtime (noon-1) add me shiftynevers (or shifty nevers).
