Other Publishers and General Comic Book Discussion Thread

Yo, it’s bad enough ONE patriot died(look at my avatar), it’s even worse that the TRUE patriot had to go.

Anyway, VSlash will defend me on this that if Geoff Johns was writing, this would have gone down a lot better. But, we’ll see. As position holders in the CHURCH OF BRU!!!11111!!11, we will follow as developments happen and keep you in the know.

Also, I agree with TS when he said that anyone else that mentions Captain Planet should be banned. Shinto, you’re time has come.

Wow, you actually got baited into running down your life resume on a messageboard. Insecure much?

You regularly seem to run across some benign comment you don’t like from an unsuspecting user, then proceed to try and show off how much of an e-thug you are by spewing a gotti-sized page of generic homophobic insults. No one else will call you on it so I thought I would.

…Anyway, I found out about the Captain America thing only yesterday, but I can’t really say that I care. Therefore, I’m not going to talk aobut that.

I just wanted to spark discussion about American Born Chinese again since I’m going to a booksigning at my job tomorrow night for it and I just wanted what was the opinion of other people since I’ve finally read it.

I have to say that I really liked in a concise summary. More in-depth details can be delayed until discussion starts…if it every does, since I only know that Zephranytes has read it.

Baited? I just figured you had a reading problem since Fishjie pretty much handled you for me last time. Is baited slang for “you got me warlock. My life isn’t about shit, but I’ll still pull that card?” Have fun living vicariously through me.

So now it’s Gotti’s dick you’re on? It must just be a thing for black men.

Darn it, I wish I didn’t leave my comics at work yesterday so I could of read some more books and I could talk about anything other than Cap biting the big one.

Anyway, big old Brubaker interview on the death of Cap -

http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=104256

Mark Millar fired that bullet. Seeing as how he already turned Cap into a bonafide
wimp at the final issue of Civil War (which sucked royally Cap’s surrender aside).

He secretly wants to be Captain America, and can’t do it until the current one
bites the dust.

I’d start bets on how lame his “resurrection” will be explained in the future.

If you read what you quoted me writing, I don’t think Captain America is not interesting. I just agreed that there are more interesting characters than this one. Also, I was stating that all comics are not as well recieved by the general public as they used to be, not just his. Sorry if that came out as “Captain America is boring” because that’s what I was trying to argue against.

FYI, I already SAW that movie. I was referring to the new movie they’ve wanted to do for awhile now but can’t because of legal reasons. If this movie was made everyone would go see it, even those claiming that Cap is boring.

Also, as for the batman thing, I agree. I didn’t mean “anti” as in opposite of batman. I just didn’t want to say “he’s marvel’s batman.” I wanted to note that they are different characters and no one’s a rip-off of the other. I guess it would’ve been more appropriate to put that he has many similarities with batman, a character that many find to not be boring. Forgiveness please.

Oh, and here’s my detailed explaination. Some superheroes seem to gimicky to me because the conflicts they encounter either cater to their powers, or their powers are slightly adjusted by the writer to deal with the situation (adjustments that get me into alot of disagreements about wolverine’s healing).

Characters like batman and captain america are shown to readers to be excellent strategists, etc. because they don’t have much else to fall back on for the random things that happen in their comics over time. Realistically, all the martial arts in the world can’t do what these characters do on their own. Basically, if the hero has the ability to be hit by an ultimate death-ray and live, they eventually will. If not, then there too smart to do something so careless. Ofcourse over-the-top is what is expected of characters that have all these powers, but comics about less-powered heroes just seem better written. Again, this is just my opinion.

Hopefully I didn’t keep the people waiting too long.

Don’t blame Millar, he actually has gone on record time and time again to state he didn’t want nor intended for any major deaths in Civil War. Marvel editorial however doesn’t let opportunities for shock and awe to pass by without trying to get more readers or create the illusion of change.

Shit, be thankful Brubaker was at the helm, I don’t think anyone else would have managed to avoid letting a editorial hivemind ruin the issue with crap suggestions that would ruin whatever emotional pull the story could have.

Plus…even without Civil War, Cap’s death was planned all along since Brubaker wrote the first issue of Captain America. Smack that little fanboy inside all of your nerdy hearts and just appreciate Captain America volume 5 1 to 25 because it was an awesome run.

Brubaker killed Cap, deal with it!

(Late) RIP

So I just came back from the comic shop and was thinking about getting the rest of the issues of Civil War (only have #1). The problem is that they’re 15 bucks from the second issue and downward with more numbers. Fighting the craving to get them before my TPs of Runaways comes in. My wallet wants to kick my ass now.

Don’t bother getting CW, sadly you can pretty much get the whole story picking up the tie ins.

As a Cap fan, if you don’t already have them, pick up the Captain America tie in issues and the Winter Soldier special. Much better reads.

Quoted for Truth. The Church needs to face this issue head on rather than blame others.

Picked up Captain America and Onslaught Reborn.

Kinda sad to see Cap go out that way. I’m not sure if I will finish the story arc or not but we’ll see.

Onslaught reborn seemed like Marvel didn’t even edit the thing. It looks like Jeph Loeb just wrote down whatever came to his head and didn’t even think twice about it. Thumbs down.

Finally caught up more or less. Everything else I read this week. Slight spoilers -

Uncanny X-Men - You know, that other book Brubaker wrote this month. Rachel finally gets some revenge for the masacre of her family, hooray!

Onslaught Reborn - I don’t know, not great or anything but it at least seemed a bit better than the last 2 issues. A member of The New Avengers makes it into Heroes Reborn world Avengers, that was cool. As for Liefeld’s mighty pencils, what can I say other than… MY EYES!

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man - Well in the intro of the comic they kind of gave away what happened / is going to happen in The Amazing Spider-Man. Dag Civil War lateness effects all…

Spider-Man shtuff

Spoiler

In the intro it says that Aunt May has been hit with the bullet and is barely hanging on to life, that’s why Peter dawned the black costume - it’s not a symbiote just the costume - to let the world know he’s not the man he used to be… even if he’s acting exactly the same… odd…

Oh and the who is Ms. Arrow ordeal still goes on. Seems like she might have a thing for Flash and she got hyper jealous when she dated Betty Brant, sent a bunch of little spiders after her oooh…

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower - I’ve only read the first issue so far but I really dug this comic, good old western stuff in a strange land. Some blood and guts involving birds too. And my close personal friend who I talked to for 10 minutes at the NY Comic Con Peter David is scripting, oh yeah! Don’t be shocked if I’m mentioned in Peter David’s will as something like, “Keep all annoying fanboys away from my funeral service!” DOH!

Nightwing - Oh yeah NW beating people up! Groom in the comic that can see people’s aura’s noted that NW’s was light blue, he said it’s not the first time he’s seen that before but it’s kind of odd… wonder if that has anything to do with how NW survived Infinite Crisis…

Outsiders - Quicky shout out to the rotating team of artists on this book, it was very seemless and a nice style, so big up to Freddie Williams II, Carlo Barberi and Art Thibert (Rememer Thibert’s pencils on Cable #1!!!) and Steve Bird. Really dug the look of the comic. On the story end, there was some hot lesbo action oh yeah! Nightwing and Red Hood are working together in this story from one year ago, so still no word on whether or not Jason Todd is the current Nightwing of Outsiders. Still I have a sneaky suspicion that Jason Todd will become the Red Robin of World War III, it’s already stated that he’s going to play a major role in 52 Countdown. Please DC… no more Jason Todd uh…

Detective Comics - Darn it! I didn’t even notice that this was a non Dini issue! The issue said to be continued so Dini will prolly miss next issue too. DOUBLE DARN IT! Last time I didn’t see Dini’s name on the cover I skipped over it but they got me this time! Freaking major Marvel character dying made me temporarily blind… story itself wasn’t bad or anything but it’s so HARD to go from Dini to anyone else… Waaaaah! :crybaby:

52 -

for 52

Spoiler

As predicted Montoya is the new Question, she’s not doing the faceless mask thing though or calling herself “La Pregunta” like I suggested… well not yet but not holding my breath…

JLA - PICK OF THE WEEK! Nothing against Cap’s death, that was good, but there was MORE GRAPHIC VIOLENCE IN JLA, 52 GRAPHIC VIOLENCE STYLE! Maybe not as graphic as some things that have gone on in 52, but loss of a limb is like Sammy Sosa would say, “Bery bery good!”

Come on Marvel, you now have no excuse for having Wolverine and Sabretooth fight and using brown or black blood. GIMME TEH VIOLENCE!!! Annihilation #7 was exceptionally violent, I’ll give them that one, but come on, give me the uber violent fight between Wolvie and Saby I’ve been waiting for FOR YEARS! They got healing factors, go crazy Marvel! If you need me to lend you the movies Ichi The Killer and Pete Jackson’s uncut Dead Alive movie for inspiration let me know, GIMME BLOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!

Okay back to therapy… really good week for comics overall. Except for Onslaught Reborn but what can you do… Liefeld’s a machine that can not be stopped…

started reading new x-men academy x vol. 1

there was some good stuff in there but overall I kept thinking about how much of a creampuff it was compared to HARBINGER. A lot of stereotypical teen bad writing we see in all sorts of mediums show up in New X-Men, while Harbinger (specifically #1-25) was stuff we had never seen before and really elevated what this type of material could do

your voicemail wasn’t funny gabe :sad::sad::sad:

Test shot for Watchmen movie, being directed by Zack Snyder (300) for release in 2008.

I’ve said it before, if any book should be a MAX title it’s Wolverine. Too bad it’ll never happen due to the legions of kids buying it.

what can yall tell me about pride of bahgdad? is it any good?
