Orlando Thread:CEO 2011 Early Bird Ends Monday

As for reaction time Rafy, I have pretty gifted reflexes against fireballs. It’s really practice practice practice and getting the muscle memory used to your opponents patterns.

ugh i need marvel already the weekend SUCKED.

anyways my main man iron man easily has the best taunt in the game

Umm good deadpool. I can’t wait to fuck with this guy!!! BANG BANG BANGBANGBANG

im thinking Deadpool Dante and Iron man… Dante’s Captain commando like assist might be the dealbreaker with me but there is a good amount of people i wanna fuck with.

@Tsak

And here you were complaining about Dante the last time I mentioned him to you! Cheap as hell, you said, and here you are jumping on the shirtless-with-trenchcoat bandwagon!

You want characters that behave like Faust? From what I’ve seen, Dante is a LOT more like Faust than Deadpool is. Deadpool may be GOOFY like Faust, but his zoning/offense, while good, is pretty straightforward. But Dante? Shit is, to use his own Ninja Turtle parlance, one crazy-ass party.

He’s got a near-inexhaustible arsenal of hitboxes for damn near any height, any range, any occasion. He can poke with those long-ass slashes of his, he can zone with crap like his missiles and his Dizzy beam-fish-like pink laser, he can do door-style crossups (and potentially Spiral-style escapes from random beam supers) with his teleport, he can air dash, bake a cake, do your taxes, the list goes on. And on top of that he seems to have MULTIPLE great assists (obviously Jam Session, but his Crystal assist seems pretty good for offense as well…multiple hits, covers a lot of ground space, seems to have a good chunk of hit/blockstun…if you like Dante but don’t really need AAA it looks really good).

From what I’ve seen, if you get familiar with his gigantic freakin’ moveset, you can do whatever the fuck you want with Dante. If that’s not like Faust, I dunno what is.

Anyone check that Waterford BestBuys?

is any body considering playing phoenix? im really curious to see how shes going to turn out i think with the right gameplan she could be beaslty on the right team i got some team ideas but obviously im going to have a better idea when i get my hands on the game

Phoenix - 420,000
Dark Phoenix - 420,000

Have fun with that.

Phoenix is way too fragile for my liking. She seems like a very needy kind of character to me; I feel like I’d have to build my entire team around keeping her alive rather than actually DOING anything with her. Seems like a GIGANTIC liability in a touch-of-death-intensive game like Marvel 3. I don’t think she’s gonna counter anyone particularly hard, either. She has DECENT zoning and mobility, but she’s not really gonna lock people down or out without Dark Phoenix.

And this doesn’t even seem like a Chipp vs. Potemkin kinda deal – according to stamina charts, this character literally has a little over HALF the HP of Magneto…and we’ve all seen how much damage Magneto takes now. One mistake vs. a bruiser like Sentinel and you’re quite literally dead. Not almost dead, but 100% TKO DEAD. Hard-hitting characters like Hulk and Sent are going to counter her HARD because they can trade and win DECISIVELY.

I’m not saying she’ll be unplayable…but unless you spend MONTHS in casuals/the lab with her, learning her strengths and weaknesses inside and out, you put her on your team in tourney and you’re playing 2.5 characters versus 3. There’s no safety belts on this character, and that bothers the hell out of a safety junkie like myself.

phoenix is an all or nothing character, she doesn’t counter anyone because she’s not supposed to. her design is to literally stay balls deep in your ass the entire match. She can and will lock people down because that’s what she is supposed to do. just because you ahven’t seen it doesn’t mean it’s not possible ben :P. Remember the game hasn’t even come out yet… I don’t think it will take MONTHES as you say just because there are people out there that don’t play constantly second guessing every move they make like you do. Phoenix is for players that literally don’t want you to breath for fear of blocking wrong. Pair her with a nice low assist and get ready to get frustrated.

It will take some work but i think you are seriously underestimating her potential… Think about it this way. yes sentinal can ToD her, but if he never touches her the death never comes, and phoenix can ToD characters too…

Passed through today when i was chilling with my girl, no dice sir :[!

I honestly don’t see her as a rushdown character. Yes, she does good damage, but it’s not like she has a particularly high-speed “think fast” kind of mixup or any particularly intense pressure that would allow her to stay in for a while in spite of pushblock (compared to characters like, say, X-23, Zero, hell, even Wolverine). She doesn’t have a tri-jump, she doesn’t have crazy fast/deep overhead (not sure if her stomp is overhead, but it’s fairly telegraphed), so I don’t see where a low assist would make her offense particularly crazy; barring a true unblockable there should be plenty of time to adjust your guard to whoever hits first.

I don’t see her as a lockdown character, either; her fireballs are decent, but if she’s gonna mount a nice wall of crap, it’ll be more by virtue of her assists than by her own power. Teleport gives her a bit of a slippery quality, but it’s not a free pressure or escape tool, and if your gap gets read, even if you don’t get hit, you could lose the initiative – and with a lifebar that tiny, you’re gonna FEEL every bit of chip you have to block before you regain momentum.

Yes, I am aware the game isn’t out yet, but I’m not just theory-fighting from my own, well-known personal preferences. Really, I’m not. I am sure there are people out there who will be able to do amazing odds-beating stuff with Phoenix, and she’ll almost certainly have some sort of shenanigan or gimmick that will body overly conservative players like myself. But with that tiny a lifebar, I don’t think she’s ANYBODY’S ticket to top 8 beyond the local level. She’ll mindfuck people who don’t expect much from her, but truly solid players will roll that bitch like a funny-smelling cigarette. Her tiny lifebar means that given an opponent with equal ability to bluff, gamble, and execute, as well as a character with a bigger lifebar, she will lose by default. Even with assists, I don’t think she’s crazy enough (barring some truly, mind-bendingly unforseen exploit) on offense to offset her fragility. It’s easy to say she’s “all or nothing”, but barring a significant player mismatch, I think she’s gonna tend overwhelmingly towards “nothing”.

And if Sentinel, even new down-to-earth Sentinel “never touches” a Phoenix player – that’s not Phoenix being awesome, that’s a terrible fucking Sentinel. How do you beat a low-health offensive character like Phoenix? 1. Block. 2. Keep blocking, for God’s sake! 3. Wait for that one good read on her approach, plow through her attack with a super-armored launcher or a defensive assist, and stomp that bitch into the mud. Find out what trades with her shit and trade like it’s Pokemon at recess, because if you don’t flat out lose, you win on damage. If you can finish j. ABCE, OTG Rocket Punch xx super, it’s lights out for Jean Grey.

ben, every time you post, you make sure you get your point across. i love it.

i hear ya, longest week of my life

Yeah, I’m sorry for the wall of text, but that IS actually why my posts tend to get so long. I don’t want to be misunderstood by omission (“ah ha! but you forgot to say something about THIS, so obviously you weren’t THINKING about it!”), so I just throw everything out there and hope that people read it all without falling asleep.

Problem is, I’m often not quite sure whether people are actually impressed by my argument or just impressed by how many words I put into it. Especially when about 10% of that word count is devoted entirely to profanity. Fuckin’ hell.

Who is going to final round by car. I need a ride to final round.

I personally think you’re the most knowledgeable person in Orlando, fighting game wise. Sucks that theory and knowledge doesn’t win you tournaments.

your post was pretty entertaining but i’d have to agree with what ian said about how phoenix’s ability to win. there are players that are able to capitalize on mistakes well but can fuck up from time to time (probably sentinel players can do that because of his damage and health) but some players are so fundamentally sound that they rarely make “mistakes”–those players could probably do well with phoenix.

I think you’ve confused knowledge with verbosity. Let me guess, you’re also a fan of Canibus and The RZA aren’t you?

Did you play MVC2? Strider dies in basically one combo and has no tri jump. Did you play TVC: CGOH? Karas dies in one hit and has no tri jump. Did you play TVC: UAS? Zero dies in one hit and has no tri jump. All three of those characters will lock you down, mix you up and fuck you up for various reasons. I don’t even think sentinel has super armor in this game. So far, just about everyone can TOD you it seems. You’re betting that you can block long enough to get a proper read when all they need is one wrong block from you. The odds are not in your favor.

EDIT: I’m also curious as to why you think she doesn’t have a tri-jump. Was Seth wrong when he said she has an 8 way air dash?

I disagree, and would actually throw that title more in the direction of people like Ed and John Martin; I understand SOME games (SSF4, KOF) reasonably well, but they understand a lot more games VERY well, at least on a technical level.

And again, I’m not saying upsets don’t happen and that theory always trumps practice where these matchups are concerned. But we’re talking about a character who takes the glass-cannon philosophy to a WHOLE new extreme. In SSF4, Seth has 2/3 of Gief’s total life, and unless Seth has already taken damage, he’s not going to die in one good look from Gief. In Marvel, Phoenix has roughly the same life deficit vs. Akuma’s health bar, and he’s in the second-lowest stamina tier in the whole game.

Fighting games are full of hilarious life deficits (Chipp vs. Potemkin, Tager vs. Carl, etc.), but I can’t recall ANY deficit on this scale ever existing before. This wouldn’t be nearly so significant if it wasn’t so easy and rewarding in Marvel 3 to generate touches of death with damn near everybody. This isn’t even a 5 bars + X-Factor deal; there are going to be a fair chunk of characters in Marvel 3 who can kill Phoenix literally in the first combo they land. To me, trying to laugh off those odds by saying “ha ha, I’ll just have an unstoppable offense and never get hit” is to willfully ignore what a Herculean task that will be against anybody who’s actually GOOD at the game.

That said, I think she won’t be countered HARD by most of the cast, but the characters who WILL counter her (Sentinel…calling it now), will counter her SUPER-HARD. She’ll do okay against characters with crappy defense and/or damage and average to below-average HP, but anybody with a bigger lifebar who can keep her down and/or out will RUIN her.

While i understand your points you are neglecting the fact that this is a 3 person team. Do jumping attacks count as overheads in this game? If so(as i’m sure they do…) then she can utilize her insanely fast tri-jump in conjunction with a low assist BAM UNBLOCKABLE LOL. She does really really good damage in her combos and if you feel that they are going to point with sent. Just pop her in as a sub. Her teleport is really fast and can cross up so there is a mixup potential there(or a punish say sentinel drones which is really really slow…) . She can pop healing shield which gives her incentive to stay in your ass. I’m not saying she’s going to be easy mode but she’s far from terrible.

Any sentinel can fuck up a mixup on a block has nothing to do with the player being terrible there are going to be 50/50’s going all over the place. Givin what chun-li can do with her tri-jump which seems about the same speed as phoenix’s(check out the LI joe vid that jebailey linked for details as to what she can do off her cross ups) i think the potential is there for her to be extremely dirty.

Of course i could be completely wrong.

EDIT:

Sorry i ramble lol…
