Original Sprite Help

Working on a fighting game right now and pretty much a garage game since it’s only me working on sprites and my friend trying to work up something with the XNA’s developer’s kit. Anyways, started working on sprites recently and found them to be pretty difficult especially when done from scratch.

Originally I had the character like this:

Notice shading is kind of funny and so is the animation (missing frames here and there to make it more fluid, but just dropping down the basic movements without fillers to make it look good). Animation is kind of stiff, but not really sure if the original idea for the idle animation is even that good to begin with…

After some thought I reworked some of the shading to make it more simple here and there as well as touching up the head and front pant leg. Going more for that fighting game anime-ish feel which is oddly kind of tough.

Still feeling a bit iffy about it. It’s my first sprite and I’m not really an artist in general, but still I wouldn’t mind some “harsh” criticism to help me improve from here. I’m thinking about doing something else for her animation, but not really too sure where to go from here. Any tips, advice, suggestions or questions welcomed.

EDIT: ImageReady was being weird, couldn’t turn off layers to animate, layers would be invisible in ImageReady, but as soon as it saved layers popped up. Leaving animation with background until I can figure out what’s wrong.

The idle animation would be much better if you also animated her legs/bottom half of her body to some extent; just having the torso and arms move while the hips and legs stay static makes it look very stiff.

For what you have so far, it looks pretty solid except for the head - I would work on adding some more detail or shading to the head.

Good job so far.

I think you are off to an awesome start, but there are some things I want to pick at.

I think you chose bad colors, even for the colors you want to convey they are over saturated and very cartoony, the pants are an exception.

Here are some great tutorials to help you, http://www.spriteart.com/main.html.

yeah, your color choices are a little weird. i think the stomach line in the center is overly emphasized and looks hella choppy.
the pants are perfect though … reminds me of pants you’d see in 3S.

That’s an awesome site KOH. I do agree that the stomach was a bit overpowering, especially on the blue. The pants as you can see went through a quite a few revisions and was somewhat really gave me the most trouble. I went from a KOF style super pants ripple to trying a simple GG style, but I didn’t really like their shading all that much. In the end it’s a mix of some techniques I see employed with GG spriting as well as 3S (particularly Twelve since it’s so easy to see the shading on him).

Anyways, any recommendations for colours? The colours were actually chosen by my friend since he drew a concept of the character and I translated it to sprite form.

As for animations, I’ll work on something after I finish this base and post it up for advice later.

  • Added some brighter reds to the hair
  • Fixed some proportions and changed forward hand
  • Colour tone darker
  • Simplified Knife (due to request from Original Concept Artist)
