K guys I’mma be at ground kontrol this saturday. I am the white looking mulatto guy in glasses from 1-5pm at GC, please hollar son.
Whatchu saying about us Vancouver guys, son?
We’ve gotta find some way to get you to Jeromies instead. We have sf4 and st and shit.
Jeromies house is downtown too, Idunno if your friend could pick you up/drop you off there instead.
EDIT: Looking at this Ground Kontrol doesn’t appear to be too far from Jeromies. Can you convince your friend to drop you off there/pick you up? I’ll PM you his address. Don’t bitch out Blake!
gotta rep the other Oregonians man lol
From right outside GK he can literally step on the green or yellow max and ride it up 5th to like 2 blocks from my house, when they force you off.
Due to recent conversations, IMs, and topics brought up in the NW I am posting this in an effort to get some discussion going. This is going to be long and poorly formatted. Please bear with me.
I think Portland right now is in a bad situation. With the death of versis we have no centralized hub to game in. We need to remedy this. If we can?t get together en masse or have mock tourneys/ranbats, we cannot thrive.
Open houses are a good start. As far as I know Jeromie?s is the only place that is regular and has a good turnout. We need more than this though. Jetay has tried to host get togethers at his place but has nothing regular established. If we can get a decent turnout and a consistent day/timeframe to meet up then perhaps that will be an option again, I will not speak for him however. I cannot ask people to open up their houses for us to impose upon them. It?s a huge burden and people leave a mess, etc. I would do it myself, but I do not have my own place sadly. If anyone does take the initiative to do so, realize you are helping out a ton.
-VENUES: Some have managed to obtain space using PSU, Seattle was able to use a Best Western to host Tournament Wars. Not that we need to replicate these, but the concepts are useful. Keep your eyes open for any venue we could possibly host out of. Even a bar or something like that. The event itself would be something that could promote business from a spectator standpoint as well as the fact that us buying food/beer/whatever would be revenue for them.
-UNITY: The people who are winning the tourneys should really be showing up to casuals too. Unless you have no intent on competing at a higher level and are content to dominate local tourneys than it should be imperative that you help get the local area into shape. Remember, better players in your area means you have someone to practice with and learn with.
-COMMUTING: We need to commute to more events like NCR or even Seattle to get in games or check out TW. Even for local events people need to be showing up or making sure they find a way to get there. If you do not have transportation, TALK to people. Carpool, offer to pitch in on gas or take shifts driving, whatever you can do. For the people going places every week with an empty car, maybe consider picking up people that couldn?t otherwise attend.
-COMMUNICATE: Be in touch with each other, exchange information. We need to get more close-knit as a community and more sociable. The more we know each other, the more we can learn from each other and work together. It?s easier to be on top of current events in terms of tourneys or casuals if you network. Check the forums whenever you can for information, post in threads when you find out about events or new venues, etc. Also post about your experiences or turnouts at local events like Ground Kontrol or Jeromies so people realize that they are very active and not dead.
-PRACTICE: This should be a given and not needed to be said, but do what you can on your own time if you can?t get to casuals, or don?t have the time. Be on top of your game so that when you do play people, you provide an opponent that people are able to learn from as well as learning from them. Don?t show up and just scrub out or make no effort in learning anything. Look up information on your character, read up on trends. Watch match videos. Practice combos. Learn matchups, frame data, ANYTHING. Just expand your horizons and make nothing off limits, you can do this.
I believe Portland has strength but we are struggling to be cohesive right now. These are my thoughts, I welcome any feedback/thoughts/ideas/suggestions.

excellent post this is EXACTLY why this thread was made and its nice to see others agreeing that we need more communication.
i think i agree with every point made and if we want to progress as a whole it seems we need to work as a team(im not calling anyone out for not doing theyre part but these things need to be discussed) our top players can only get so good if they do not have people pushing them to improve and bringing new exposure to the table.
on the topic of venues as stated by Justin, Jetay has made it clear that his house is open almost any day, all we need to do is call him. so im calling him tomorrow and seeing whats up, there is also PSU which is open every Wednesday and ran by Hellsap for those who have not been there the room that is used is very spacious and has a huge tv i would think multiple setups are possible but that would be a question for Hellsap, i for one would be willing to bring at least another TV and attend as often as possible. and of course we have last Wednesday(which i wish i could attend) and Jermoie’s place which has been catching on and being filled to compacity almost every week now(which is a good sign), but 1 get together a week is probably not enough TBH. im not asking Jermoie to open his house for multiple days(although he has expressed interest) but we need more options.
im also guilty of not making it out of state enough i wish i could, finances are short atm but im all over events like NWM which wasent TOO far or expensive and i had an awesome time. props to the guys that made it down to NCR to rep PDX.
SamY placing top 8 like a badass i was really impressed when i saw your name man GJ(sorry if you go down there and place all the time but still that got me hyped)
Again it would be nice if Hellsap or whoever is spearheading the PSU event would keep a regularly updated thread on SRK so newer members knew the details and what the situation/environment was like.
Getting new people into the scene would be good too. I think right now if someone looked at the portland area from an outside perspective or just judging it off the forum presence, it would seem non existant. I’m not saying flood the forums with superfluous posts or spam, but at least post when you attend something so people know that you exist.
If anyone has any friends especially gamer friends, maybe you can get them into sf4 or try to teach them. Show them some match vids, etc. Get them hype and maybe they’ll get pumped up and get a setup. A lot of the regulars in seattle are people who are new to the scene or joined with sf4.
Talk to Ground Kontrol. Convince them to do some sort of play all night special for the fighting gamers weekly or even bi-weekly instead of 1 day a month. If enough people speak up, and we are willing to show up, they will maybe consider it. Even if they don’t, there’s no harm in trying.
Find venues or arcades that could potentially carry SF4 and petition them to get a cab. It may be a bit of a hard sell with SSF4 coming out, but again, it costs us nothing to try.
I’m not gonna volunteer my equipment 4 times a month (As I have been for the last 6+ months). If they can supply the console (ps3/360, doesn’t matter), we can at least bring the game and joysticks/pads required. I’ll ask them myself if this could be possible.
There was a guy I met a while back, Andrew something who was trying to run a gaming company. He basically had a gang of equipment and was looking to host tournaments and events and such, and even had an in with the local YMCA or something. I met him when he was holding a Game Crazy tournament for that UFC game. I found his card again a couple days ago and will give him a call.
Ray, if the guy is full legit and reasonable financially, would you be interested in talking to him about future projects like another Survival Kombat and other events?
I will bring my 360. If I cannot make it, I will allow someone else to bring my 360. I do not possess the sticks or games however. I realize that you having to bring your equipment every week would be a huge pain and I just want to let you know that its appreciated that you bring it as much as you do, so don’t feel its taken for granted.
EDIT: I’ve sent out some PMs and already written an email to GK. Will try to think of more things to do to help out later.
Ok I’m hype! Casuals today when and where? Let’s get something going.
lol, i was planing on checking out PSU around 6 or 7 cause im not sure when it starts, then im calling up Jetay at 8:30 to see whats up with tonight or tomorrow.
Edit: i found info at http://randomselect.forumotion.com/club-stuff-f1/fall-2009-schedule-t43.htm?sid=c1e4bc2103d0b6dc1d156312d3d8bd9c
