Option select

I made this thread in hopes of learning about Dhalsim’s option selects. I’ve read about them in other threads but I don’t know how to they work and I feel if I did I could improve my game. The main one I want to know about is how to option select throw’s.

Do you mean like… crouch teching? Where you hold down and hit the throw buttons? If they’re throwing you it’ll tech, otherwise you’ll get a crouching short(c.lk).

Of course, if you do this a millisecond too soon the crouching short will start to come out (you won’t be able to see it), and you’ll get thrown immediately for free…

Yea, the throw tech o-s is really simple and hella effective (until you get figured out by a player who knows how to frame trap you). Crouch and press short+jab a split second after the startup of each of your opponents pokes within a blockstring. Opponent throws, you tech. Opponent does nothing, you throw out db.short.

I’m actually really interested in Sim’s more ‘advanced’ option selects. The only one I know of is UltraDavid’s option select vs. Rufus’ divekick pressure. Basically, after every blocked dive kick you hit b.strong ~ throw buttons. In theory, if he goes up for another dive kick the O-S gives you hook-arm, and if he throws the O-S gives you tech. I do this every now and again, but I usually get owned for trying it. :rofl:

Mariodood recently suggested that Iyo uses a s.short / b.strong O-S, but I have no idea how that’d work. Maybe the O-S is actually b.short / b.strong?

Are there others?

Crouch tech needs practice but when you master it, your defense grows a lot, and you’ll be more solid.
I always miss b.mk ~ throw buttons O-S. Pressing 3 buttons almost at the same time is not easy…any tips?

b.short / b.strong seems interesting, but in which case it should be used??! Only Iyo knows :smiley:

A fellow dhalsim player found that s.slide~~super worked as an OS when Rufus does messiha kick… Between the first hit and the variation that follows… Could someone test this?

Maybe it’s a tactic designed to help Sim get through blockstrings. If your opponent likes to run blockstrings like (c.short, c.short, and then either walk up and throw or go for the crossup), maybe you can use that O-S to kill two options.

Or maybe it doesn’t even exist. I don’t know.

vs boxer:
slide and input the super motion, including punch buttons.
if boxer does a dashpunsh and get hits by the slide you’ll slide xx super. if boxer does nothing slide whiffs and you keep your super

This was complete theory fighter on my part, I didn’t mean back+LK, I mean standing LK, the long poke. Its just that one thing I know top Japanese players incorporate into their game is basically filling the game with commands in case they mess up a combo or something. So Daigo does shit like cr. MP, cr. MP~MK into HP hadoken so if he messes up a cr. MP link he gets a different combo.

I tried it out in training mode later and I found it kinda hard to do. Basically my idea was that if the st. LK is hit or blocked, you wll have a certain recovery, but if it whiffs, you will recover much sooner and be able to b+MP a jump in (assuming they jumped, the limb will whiff)

Just an idea. Might not be useful and might not be what Iyo does. Maybe he just looks for jumps all day.

this.
imo, that option select makes no sense since you’d mistime the b.mp a lot of times. the situation you speak of isn’t hard to react to either.

This one. I use it all the time, it’s too good against boxer

Look at this one vs Viper:

It loses versus Thunder Knucke HP, burning kick EX, and ultra 1, but beats seismo EX and backdash.

Motion:
:db::hp::qcf::qcf::uf:+:3p:

Also Super can be used:

:db::hp::qcf::qcf: +:mp:

In that case, it also beats burning kick ex! (super LP will hit only twice, so use super MP for full damage)

EDIT: sometimes super will not autoflip during buning kick EX.

Now we are talking! I like that OS a lot! I will try that if I play some backdash happy players today!

You’ve just to find the time to do a meaty db.hp.

Edited last post.

Yeah this 1 helps a ton =)

If you could explore this too, and find a set up, that would be awesome? Like backthrow->LIAT->OS or forward throw->short slide->OS?

Please forgive my ignorance but what does “OS” stand for in this context?

Ouch. Sorry, obviously it means option select. Yikes. Need more coffee.

Slide beats all options on messiah mixup. It’s an os between blocking flip kick, beating late flip kick, beating sweep, and going under overhead.

Is this only short slide? Also, keep in mind that fadc backdash is also an option for Rufus.
