Opinions on non-functional mashing as distractions

so i’m sure most peple have experienced the opponent mashing or hitting buttons to fuck up your timing on infinites/combos/setups or whatever. so my question is, what is everyones opinion on it? i mean seriously, some people play by sound of each attack connecting and thats how they learn to time a lot of combos. mashing the buttons has nothing to do with gameplay, its actually a distraction OUTSIDE of the game. you might as well knudge the person, or stick your hand in their view. its different if the person THINKS you can mash out of something, but when they perform individual button presses on one of your key moves you need to time perfectly, is that not frowned upon? personally it doesnt bother me or anyone i know, but it has caught me off guard a couple times. even if it isn’t effective, its somewhat childish and a mild form of cheating. does anyone else agree?

completely disagree, i’ve had some matches with some of the best players around and gotten mindfucked because they slap one of the non-functioning buttons on a custom stick, i read this as a helper input and died for it. Didn’t bother me, i thought it was pretty damn slick, it also taught me not to rely on the sounds in the game.

in big tourneys you usually can’t hear anything anyways

The people I play against mash all the time. You get used to it.

childish, but it’s part of the game. i agree with mixup on tourneys, it gets so loud that you can’t even hear a thing.

i’m not asking if it effects peoples gameplays. i’m asking if you people agree that its just a stupid idea considering it has nothing to do with the game. i mean, why distract someone outside the game? the point is to make noise during a combo so they mess up, wouldnt that typically be the same as yelling at someone during gameplay to distract them? my main point isnt about how it effects people, its the intent of the masher. shouldnt clean game play be done by sticking to the game and not attempting to distract someone outside the game?

when your caught your caught.

if mashing actually affects the player then that is really big weakness.

if you remember the 04 daigo parry moment, you will see justin mashing trying to do SOMETHING to stop madness, but daigo didn’t fuck up, and just fucked him up.

so if mashing during a COMBO is a problem, then don’t really on sound, focus on the screen.

now mashing out of a RESET is alittle annoying, but if you know they will do it, you can time another hit to counter their’s.

eh, lol you guys arent understanding what im trying to get at. i’m not debating if it effects people or not, i know its not a problem at all. i dont really know anyone who it effects, but i’m just saying. when you’re playing a game, stick to game STRATEGY and not distracting the player outside the game.

If you’re stuck in an infinite, what strategies are really available?

take your pick…pay attention to where the reset is coming from, or fuck with the guy just because you’re stuck in a combo.

pretty retarded i agree, but what else can you do?

beat up the machine.:looney:

Co-sign with Tiny Sentinel Mixup. I’ve seen top players “random useless mash” the machine so hard they broke buttons. And Issariya (local Seattle player, now in Thailand) got farking insanely good at randomly mashing into breaking your combo. (Leading to the local phrase “Issariyious?” to mean “WTF?”)

The “best” match I ever saw was DJ-B13 vs Potter down at NCR where Brian and Pozzle banged on the machine during each other’s combos enough that they broke the machine twice and went to a contested game 5 (in best of 3) before Brian walked away.

Deal with it. Learn to distract, learn to ignore.

Yes sir

the only bad thing about counter mashing during an infinite is that if its anticpated, the opponent can stop and allow those button inputs to come out. If you managed to hit the assist button during your mash, you may be in bad spot.

I mash but I don’t neccesarily do it on purpose to distract my opponent. I’m not sure why I do it, its just a habit.

alto of people mash things that are absolutely inescapable.
aka iron man infinite, anakaris mummy throw attack

the problem with the people who mash at my arcade, they shake the whole damn machine. they actually hit your hand with their hands/elbows and the cabinet rocks back and forth. mashing SO furiously when I’m romming them or rushing them down. this one players just spreads out his elbows and tries to do rush down but just repeatedly calls sonson (or cyc) and mashing hail. how the fuck am I supposed to play.

just be glad ur not in newark. they just press ur start button lol

wtf dude. id give that guy a real rocket punch myself. that’s so annoying
