Ono's ridiculous aesthetics

I love this ridiculous Japanese shit.
Haven’t seen a Street Fighter yet that wasn’t visually appealing to me even though I’m kind of sad that they didn’t try the more or less realistic approach anymore since Street Fighter 2.
The game was colorful, yet serious and tried to look more real than anything we’ve seen since (except SF The Movie lol).
I wish they’d go for that style again and brought back the mashed-in faces after fights.

I even like how SFIV looks to be honest.
That game has some beautiful stages, characters designs and music.

Remember the times when SF’s characters and world felt serious and not stereotyped?

Me neither.

They feel that way now but they weren’t when it first came out. Besides, we all know how tall and bulky Thai kickboxers are.

The general complaint is that SF is doing something similar to pokemon, moving towards the later gen nonsense rather than keeping the semi realistic formula of the first gen. The argument is that something is lot by adding to much ridiculousness to the game but the counter argument is that it was always ridiculous.

I know I felt this way when it came to the new Guilty Gear characters so I can see where it comes from but it probably shouldn’t be a thread.

Necro isn’t ridiculous or anything.
Said fucking no one, ever.

Street Fighter (1987), anyone?

There’s a big difference betweeen “stereotyped” and goofy/slapstick/ridiculous.

I’d like to weigh in and say that while I agree that the silly shit has definitely been smothered more in SFIV and perhaps SFV than in past SF games, that still doesn’t mean that SF was ever serious in nature. I personally like some of the over-the-top shenanigans because it’s something that most fighting games don’t do as great a job of.

You gotta remember that these games are supposed to be about having fun, and to some, fun is making scrubs really salty by beating them with something that’s hilariously cheesy like Sean’s basketball taunt, Dudley’s rose, or stunning someone and using Dan’s super taunt into ultra 1.

As a side thing, I would like to point out that everyone ever is like “a skinny dude has never been done before” when it’s like…guys did you forget Remy?

Hmmm everyone disagreeing with something Magegg says.

If youre going to start picking at an ANIMATED game for leisure as having inaccurate/goofy visuals, then at least start at the fact that half the characters can shoot fire/electricity out of some part of their body, and jump 10 feet in the air.

A completely realistic looking game with realistic looking characters wouldnt be very fun.

VF has the most reallife looking cast and their martial arts are actually pretty realistic, but the makers still needed to add juggles/bounces/wall bounces etc. to make the game fun. VF5 customisations include floating halos/denjin limbs etc. etc.

I would say it’s more Dumps I mean Gimps I mean Chimps I mean Dimps, sorry, ahem, I think it’s them not necessarily Ono.

That said this group has come along way, SFV looks great, the art direction is miles better than IV. The models and animation are top notch. They clearly learned a lot or invested in new artists, it looks great.

There are still some things here and there that “remind” you of SFIV, and I mean that in a bad way. Like the goofy and distractions of background characters, they still look horrible, so so backgrounds (though they’ve gotten better).

Some of Street Fighters best designs are silly characters, some of them the fans can’t even get new renditions of anymore.

Been saying this in the character thread and agree completely.

Apples and Oranges. Those juggles / wall bounces are gameplay mechanics added for fun reasons. What is discussed here are artistic elements that have no impact of the game but have been getting over the top. Is not about being being unrealistic, but over the top unrealistic, getting close to kiddie cartoons ala Tex Avery or Hanna Barbera.

Compare Dudley’s Corkscrew Blow vs Corkscrew Cross for example. More of those exists where people who enjoyed SF before put a line.

Everything from SF2 on has been varying levels of goofy violence. Even in SF2 you had things like Blanka’s eyes bugging out of his skull and seeing peoples’ skeletons when they get electrocuted. SF3 was probably the most “serious” the game’s violence has ever been represented and feels like a bit of an outlier to the rest of the series. I think it is a little more prevalent in SF4 and SF5 but not really more than SF3 took it in the other direction.

SFEX was developed by Arika, by a former Capcom employee who hadn’t designed an SF character since the very first Street Fighter game, Street Fighter 1 in 1987, so his/his teams character designs don’t really count, though some of them are cool. It’s not a Capcom production nor did the SF team that designed SF2, SSF2, SFA, SF3 have anything to do with it. It’s just not official even though some of the designs are a lot better than say, El Fuerte.

You’re right though some of the best SF designs are “out there”. Oro/Necro/Q/Twelve/Remy just ooze awesomeness.

All of the EX designs are better the fuerte…

Shit the ex series had pure gold in there, sucks most people missed out.

  1. Chun-Li’s thighs are muscular, not fat.
  2. You know why her thighs still look like that? Because the majority of fans loved this about her. This is what makes her unique and attractive. She is not a little girl, she is a strong independent woman.
  3. SF females are more muscular than the females of other Fighting Games. But this is a good thing imo, they look like they are really able to fight instead of just looking like top models.

I really dig that about street Fighter. Even the more fan service esque ladies still look like they can put a hurting on you. Like especially here in Street Fighter V. Where all the ladies have been shown to have put on some lbs and size. Like since when do female fighting game characters weigh in over 150lbs?

I did not like the gameplay of the EX series. At all.

I feel that variety is the spice of life. While I do agree that Ono’s tastes are a bit out there, I think the main reason it’s an issue is because of how widely it was applied to the SFIV presentation. Dan is known as the goofball of SF but he barely stood out as such in SFIV. You could say he was just another face in the crowd.

I don’t agree with all (probably not even half) of the points brought up in OP but I can definitely understand if you and others felt somewhat “betrayed” by the direction of SFIV. I recall feeling similarly when throw whiffs were introduced; they added a layer of goofiness to a formula that felt a bit less playful up until then. But they quickly grew on me, and at no point did I feel it contaminated SF because no matter how “serious” you’d like to say SF felt back then, it always had cartoony flavor mixed in. Especially when compared to the likes of MK/MKII, which felt much darker and “serious business” by contrast.

So yea, Ono has definitely left his mark on the series but. . . It worked. I think (outside of simplifying gameplay) it’s what sold SFIV. It’s easy --and ambitious-- to say that “all you have to do is add the original World Warriors and the game will sell”, when SF was circling the drain before Ono took the reins. So kudos to him. I’ll take an over-the-top goofy SF over no more SF in a heartbeat. I’m just grateful one character in particular managed to narrowly Fierce-Thunder-Knuckle-Cancel through Ono’s hitbox of eccentricity. Everyone else can EAT it.

Not gonna lie: That CA is the ONLY reason I’m even thinking about using him. It’s both fly and trolly as fuck. I’ll die with full meter before I spend a stock of EX to save my life.

Wait, wut? Eww. How paradoxical. You had all of that jazz to say in the OP but oversized hands, and feet that are magically larger while bare, than they are with a pair of shoes on them, doesn’t put you off in the least?
Does not compute.

I can’t tell you how satisfied I was to see that Marvel 3’s designs didn’t adhere to Bengus’s old trademark look. And I love Bengus, because of how his style evolved later on, but that short-stature/big-hand/big-foot/musclebound shit is, like, the* perfect* combination of things that rub me the wrong way; it’s particularly yucky recreated in 3D. I also feel that Ono leaving those trademark proportions intact says quite a bit. Assuming he even had the option of changing it.

Speaking of Fuerte, did you notice his Halloween DLC costume is basically Skullomania?

Sheep will be sheep. I prefer to think for myself…

SFII was pretty dark and serious in nature IMO. when the characters bled and vomited, there was nothing comedic about it. Don’t forget how Blanka and Zangief’s bite moves caused bloodshed.

Necro looks ridiculous, but his story is anything but. He was experimented on which turned him into whatever he is now, and was left for dead
