Kind of a strange question, but I figured I’d throw it out. I play a decent amount of the game both online and offline. What I notice is that I play much better offline (which is probably what everyone says here) compared to online. With online, I know that there is lag which will cause inputs to come incorrect, moves having advantage when they shouldn’t, and all sorts of random happenings. So really, is there any real point to seriously improve your skills with online matches?
Matchup experience. That’s about it.
Yeah, matchup experience. Everything else ends up not mattering much.
Damn. Sounds kinda useless. I hope the next time around, the lag won’t be as bad.
Online is pretty useless. Good for casual play with friends though.
also an endless supply of bots to test theory on
I hear ya. Worst part is that I really try hard to win the matches, and whenever I lose I just scoff it off and say lag did it. I feel I should be doing better, but barely win matches online.

Online is far from being useless if you and your opponent have good connections with minimal latency (lag) involved, e.g if you live in Japan where it’s normal to have 6ms or even less pings on local servers, online SF4 is a very viable option to improve your overall game, that’s not exclusive to Japan though, just don’t expect to play west cost vs east coast like it’s offline.
It really depends man.
all those dudes that are saying online is useles are 1000/2000PP scrubs who take online play as an excuse for their lack of skill
its true offline is much better but if you have a good conection you can improve a lot by only playing online
sometimes you gonna miss combos online and thats preaty much it,so basicly online your execution drops from 100% to 80-85% because of lag
Whats the game run at 60 fps. So 1 frame is like 16ms. I can ping at 5ms to some people in the same city, In Europe its not so bad.
Online does tend to make certain moves safer than they really are and you can mistakenly pickup bad habits. i.e. certain characters play a lot differently offline.
What a load of BS. You can learn a lot online against people with decent connections.
Online is still good for match up experience up to a point.
Thing with online is that its a big change in nuance, some playstyles get weaker and some stronger, some characters play very differently online or should i say, they get away with a lot of stuff that they would not online.
1 match could be good connection and then you face someone where everything is a few frames slower, so your constantly adapting to connections.
Execution goes down, reaction goes down, frustration goes up.
Basicly online is just a bit of a different game and you need to know this going in if your training for the offline world.
Its very easy to pick up bad habits online, like teching earlier then you should, doing dumb things that you cant get away with easy offline.
Also “forgetting” to punish/react to stuff or even not doing certain combo’s , because you just never could do it reliably online.
So overall online can still be used as a good training method, but you have to always keep in mind to keep bad online habits out of your offline game.
Aside from matchup knowledge, footsies is probably the only other solid experience you can get while playing online if you’re not in a “near” lagless game–which is the exception. The above post sums up the rest pretty well though. Online is for sure not the place to be when you’re trying to nail execution.
Cool story. Try doing more than your basic 2-3 frame links online. Also, practically no one has 100% execution outside of training mode.
…I completely agree with this post other than the part about online being a good training method.
i have no problems with 1 frame links online most of the time…as i said online i do miss em sometimes but they are verry doable
