I was wondering if anyone else had the problem of just being so fustrated when playing online that you have mentally lost the fight before it begins?
This evening i was just fighting Kens on Live. Not exactly unusual but they seemed to be queuing up to fight me! Some were good, some were AWFUL!
I lost to most of them.
It started off okay but after a while just seeing Ken Masters picture coming onto the screen just enraged me  and i made horrible, horrible decisions during the matches. I was shouting at some points at the screen at the horrible flowchart SRK’s i was eating.
I knew i was better then half of them, as i can normally deal with them fine. Its just this evening … GAH!!! I felt like such a scrub.
Offline though i am fine. I stay calm no matter the situation. I just relax, and win or lose shake my opponents hand, and have lots of fun :woot:
ONLINE :mad::mad::mad::mad: Its like i lose before the match begins half the time.
My main offline training partner is completely different. He is a beast online, but nerves get to him in any tournaments he attends.
I know online doesnt matter etc etc. But its pretty much all i have most of the time.
I apologise i didnt want to turn this so ranty :looney:
Just try to stay above it. It’s frustrating playing online sometimes since a lot of people get away with stupid shit, but that’s the nature of the game when you play it online.
you want to beat a flowchart ken easily? bait the shoryukens and attack him before he reaches the ground. once he stops using them, just kick his ass like normal
when playing online, NEVER take things too seriously! if you only worry about your ranked points or the lag that’s killing your perfect executed combos down the drain thats when the game isnt fun anymore… you have to expect those kind of things when online. and when you’re annoyed playing online, take a break from it and chillax outside…
I feel your pain, OP. Whenever I am a little too slow to punish a blocked DP online and then consequently get counterhit by the EX DP that they were mashing on the way down, I basically autolose that match due to being mad at myself, and then lose the next match or two because I’m even more mad that I lost to such an idiot. But I guess learning how to keep your cool is just as much a part of learning to be a good player as practicing execution or anything else.
i think people are always quick to blame online it’s simple it is either you lost or you won. if it lag kick them out or you are on the internet.
30% online lag the rest you can barely notice.
You just have to take online with a grain of salt…and lag.
But regardless, it’s important to remember it does not matter, at all. You’re basically just playing for fun when you’re playing online.
If I get frustrated I immediately try an entirely new strategy. Instead of rushing down, I turtle up. Instead of approaching in broad movements like jumps and dashes, I inch and try to freak out my opponent.
Sometimes I’ll try a random/psychic DP if they’re getting poke-happy, in the case of Dan vs. Dhalsim. That curry-eating jerk needs to be taught how to respect a man with no zoning options…
let me expand upon what I said earlier. i realize I didn’t really explain why you should do that.
just because you’re more skilled than a player does NOT mean you are the winner of the match. years ago I sucked as a competitor. I’ve played newbies I was legions ahead of in skill in Starcraft, MvC, XvSF, and SFA3. the newbies in all of those instances beat the living shit out of me and it was the most frustrating thing ever; i KNEW they were unskilled. as weird as it’s gonna sound to most of you, I gotta say it: skill is nearly irrelevant for determining a winner. you build up skills to increase your chances of winning; you gain knowledge on the game, the opponent, and yourself to increase your chances of winning; increasing your chances of winning doesn’t = win. now that I’m a better competitor, I find myself creating the exact situation I used to have trouble with; I’m the newbie who beats the skilled player
the only thing that has a direct bearing on your win or loss is whether or not you accomplish the actual task of beating the shit out of your opponent. that’s IT. there’s no pretty magic to it.
you could perform the most primitive actions (ex. buffer for shoryuken repeatedly waiting for a jump), do lame ass 3 hit combos or drop big ones, refuse to use infinites, do something retarded like refusing to block, won’t to use the char to its fullest, get hit by the same shit over and over… it doesn’t matter. if you beat the shit out of them, you win; don’t, then you lose. the reason you do longer combos is to get a better effect for less hard work. same reason you block, learn to infinite properly, use the best chars the best ways possible, etc. those don’t give you the win they just make it slightly easier to obtain.
Dude, easy solution to your troubles. Go to training mode and set the CPU to spam shoryukens. Learn the easiest possible punish that still does decent damage but you will never fuck up online. Then take note of the spacing and try to find a setup which will cross them up clean while they mash shoryuken. At worst, you’ll just reset them out of the air but if you make your setup tight, you can ground them and repeat the setup all over again again.
For example for abel you would block a shoryuken and punish with cr HP xx Falling Sky. Then immidiately backdash and immidiately jump forward MK. If you did it right and they were mashing shoryuken, you’ll hit them and you’ll be able to combo into Falling Sky again.
Those are just off knockdowns but if someone tries to frustrate you by doing jumpback fireball, do NOT chase them. Let them corner themselves and you just work on keeping them there. Then there are those kinds kens that love to spam step kick. After blocking it, don’t press another button because its in his advantage. Always keep to blocking because thats what genuinely kills scrub kens. They’re not smart enough to mixup lows and overheads, they can’t combo (aside from maybe j HK cr HK), they cant kara throw and they have zero zoning sense. The true secret to beating bad kens is to just let them do dumb shit and you punish them for it.
And if you get hit by dumb shit you have to tell yourself you saw it coming and really need to avoid it. Because if you keep getting hit on their wakeup because you decided to attack them knowing full well that they’re gonna uppercut, it just means you’re no better than them. You may have better execution or more knowledge of the game but at the end of the day, in this game skill is decided by how much you win. Theory fighters and combovid makers are no better than button mashing scrub if they can’t win more.

It’s not a matter of practice, so GG all the dipshits saying “derp bait and dur go tu tairning mode”, guess what? Stop thinking no one knows how to beat retarded flowcharters.
What happens, OP, is that your brain gets tired of constant scrub shotos and --GASP – actually wants to try something else. I know, i know, this is an alien concept to the clear majority who are inexplicably entertained by playing like an idiot night after night, but for the rest of us, we have this strange urge to do more with the game than constantly play as though it’s our job to put up with scrubs. We actually get thoughts like “OK, what if i do this, how’s that work?”, which in a game of responses for specific situations, ends up failing because the endless shotohorde isn’t going to fucking do anything different. Ever.
Hey, i’ve punished this fierce SRK 4 times in a row now, maybe it’s time for some frame trSHOOOOORYUKEN
yeah… this is exactly why people are saying to bait the shoryuken. when someone’s throwing out shit fiercer than what you can handle, you have to give in to them and make them look like a jackass. that’s not a foreign concept.
you have hit a nerve here that is a problem even in REAL fighting scenarios. and is actually a heavy part of my strategy when playing a live opponent. i love to destroy them mentally, makes the fight much easier, and it’s also a source of many of my rage quitters, comes with the territory.
the key to over coming this is to remember that no matter how good you are, there is always someone better. this means that if your opponent is better than you, then someone is better than them, if you get what im saying. if they can be beaten, then YOU can be the one to do it. if they stomp you, fight them over and over, looking for weaknesses to exploit, then begin incorporating this into your strategy, and you will slowly gain the advantage. if you keep your wits, you can win pretty much any fight with enough time. i do this a lot on tvc when fighting a superior opponent. i’ll wear them down by keeping my head straight and adapting to their style, so that no matter what they switch up, im figuring them out.
when you feel your self getting bested by your fears or anxiety, just breath deep, remember that david killed goliath, and then MAKE a way to beat your opponent. force your self to keep your head straight. :wgrin: you can do it
non-sense. skill isn’t linear. you could subject it to a linear form with objective data, but it’s not linear.
for all intents and purposes let’s say there’s 3 players: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. in 5 tourneys, Rock is matched against Paper and Scissors gets some guy he can easily beat. in these 5 tournaments, Rock loses to Paper and Paper loses to Scissors. he’s tourney champ 5 times in a row. is Scissors some kind of god?
let’s say for the next 5 tourneys, Rock is matched against Scissors instead. Rock beats the living shit out of him. Paper beats Rock. This happens for 5 tourneys. GASP O_O !!! is Paper a god or something?!
no.
Paper had what he needed to beat Rock. Rock had what he needed to beat Scissors. Scissors had what he needed to beat Paper. that is all
edit: oops didin’t finish.
The saying should be “no matter how good you are, you can be beaten”
my guard is hardly ever down but my online lags alot.
i just recently recently played some guy on PSN and he think i sucked because i played with dan grabbed him like crazy.
I still lose because i cant really do anything in lag period but it was funny seeing this scrub talking about how bad i was because i grabbed. then he went on to say he play with some of the best players in the world & then proceed to say it was somebody in the top 10 on PSN
I feel your pain OP. The problem isn’t he’s getting hit with DPs, if you thought that was the problem. He’s not even complaining that he’s playing flowchart Kens.
Maybe some of you missed the point of this thread:
In short, yes we have. We have all been frustrated at losing to shit we absolutely know is coming.
How do we handle it? Various ways. One was mentioned, and I know I sound like a broken record but:
BAIT.WHIFF.PUNISH.
But that’s not all. Sometimes you need to remember that because it is a video game, it has an ON/OFF button, which means YOU control your emotions, not the game. You have to learn how to play the game, don’t let it play you. You may need to take a brief break from the game. Or possible play some endless (i could care less fun) matches. Maybe play some trials while you cool off. Or my absolute favorite, watching your replays.
In any case, you need to have the mindset of going into every match expecting your opponent to SRK all day long, every time. Knowing this ahead of time, you won’t disappointedly be caught off guard eating a flame punch for 25% dmg. Just expect the EXPECTED when you play online, and you won’t be frustrated because, you knew it was coming eventually.
No, instead you’ll just be too bored to care about trying to win anymore. Thank you, people recommending Ryu! You’ve made everything so much better!
P.S. going into every match expecting your opponent to be a mashing retard, even if true 98% of the time, is the quickest way to develop shitty flowchart habits of your own.
