What are some good oni pressure strings and frame traps? My game up close right now is basic cr.lp, cr.lp kara throw or demon palm. What moves are good for getting counter hit and safe pressure?
Offensive options at mid-close range? forward+fierce is a great poke, you could throw a fireball, fake a fireball with forward+jab, forward+medium kick to get in, dash forward, there are plenty of options. Depending on the matchup Oni doesn’t absolutely need to be close range and combo, a pestering fireball game from half to 2/3s of the screen will work just fine.
cr.lp into back+strong is tight enough to interrupt any buttons they wanna press, and if you were close you can link another as your hitconfirm. As for pressure strings I get some success just walking up cr.lp. Stagger them and walk inbetween, and eventually walk into throw range and they have to choose between teching a throw and blocking.
Treat it like you would an SPD except backwards. Start at up-forward and bring it to down and then back. It’s not a true tiger knee, but it’s an easier input
Alright so I’m gonna address the elephant in the room (or at least the one that i see). Some things I’ve noticed with ultra when playing with oni is:
I loved Oni in super. He felt strong, bulky, and something to be feared. I was even looking forward to some of the buffs they were gonna give him but then scrapped (-4 on medium stomp i believe was my biggest hype for him).
Now though, i feel like he’s dying on me too fast, and the damage i was doing that was rocking people off the walls is now… not what it used to be.
His ultra 1 feels a tad more powerful (damage increase obviously), and it can now combo from a light shoryuken if opponent jumps in on you which is dope, though I’m not used to it haha.
Being me though, i want the stuff that reps Oni; His ultra 2. Now some people have been saying that the motion change is better. For me… idk. i use a pad so that probably doesn’t help, and since i use a pad its also difficult to utilize his red focus which i “Hear” is something he benefits greatly.
I hope another update comes out to rebalance the characters. They fucked Oni hardcore. Shoryuken fadc on block was just straight pointless. Don’t give me something that literally does nothing for me! If i backdash I’m screwed because of his horrible backdash, if i forward dash its -5. Gimme back that raw strength! Gimme back 1000 stamina. GIMME BACK ONI! Maybe I’m just being paranoid but i feel they really screwed him up.
Thank you for this post ! I thought I was alone !!!
On top of what you said, I feel that his hitboxes seem to have changed, so I miss a lot of my attacks (like, wtf happened with jumping HK !? Or back MP !?), and even more than his damage, his stun potential has dramatically decreased. Thanks to the light Demon Slash nerf, his main tool. That’s not even mentionning his decreased health, which handicaps quite a lot to be honest, his dying so fast, and handicaps a lot of his style. Overall, more than a balance, I feel the nerfs much more strongly than the buffs. Thanks to one guy who did a bit well for a little time, they just took the fun of playing him… Quite sad to be honest.
Maybe Red Focus ask for another playstyle, but one that revolves around it wouldn’t be much interesting… I really wonder what he might have now that E. Ryu for example doesn’t… ?
Evil ryu i used to never truly have a problem with unless the guy i faced had combos galore. Now i have trouble with just about every character I’m facing (Cody, Bison, E.Ryu, Rolento. I want to add red focus into the style since i mainly use U2… need to get arcade stick lol.
And i have to admit thats its an even more uphill battle with oni now. Like… I’m only winning if i turtle and just basically no aggression unless the opponent fucks up. I DONT LIKE PLAYING LIKE THAT. But its sad that i feel i HAVE to play like that to win now because everything I’m doing is getting out beaten.
Im wondering if they’re gonna update Ultra Street fighter anytime soon with some changes. I feel it was released not too early, but it was hastily decided on who gets what. and then last minute taking away the couple of buffs i was looking for in oni and THEN nerfing his health!
Oni doesn’t have good safejump setups, especially off his throws. His best offense is grounded. You can do something a bit like Ken with Oni’s kara throw, but Oni has better frame advantage but worse overheads and throw range. He also has his slash stuff, which is risky but can pay off.
Off a HK tatsu you can hold up forwards and if they quick stand you get a crossup j.mk that can’t be reversal SRK’d.
His stomps can lead to safe jumps, but I don’t know of any simple setups off of them.
Off forward throw you can medium kick slash in dash once for a meaty throw or crouch med or back med punch.
off of forward throw you can also do a ghetto “safe” jump that beats 5 framers by light slash then jump hard kick after, the timing is really late on the jump hard kick almost like your trying to hit the opponents shin, it doesnt seem to matter if they delay wake up or not for this set up. i couldnt get any os to work with this because the hardkick needs to be pressed so late.
off of stomps in the corner you can dash once and jump hard kick for a fake cross up, you gotta wait for the opponent to get up then press the hardkick, this can be interchanged with medium kick or lightkick, the timing can be changed for the lightkick to land on either side.
off of stomps in midscreen or corner you can dash forward, neutraljump medium punch os DP certain characters with bad wake up ie bison and cody and honda to some extent.
forward throw in the corner you back dash crouch med punch jump lk, it stuffs 3 frame dps and if you empty jump instead you get a meaty crouch lightkick.
there are other setups that used to be unblockable but now end up being blockable both ways, and other setups with stomps in combos but is dependant on what stomp you used to end and what buttons you used prior to ending in stomp.
well the best way to play oni is a bait and punish character. he gets his mileage off of his kara throws, when the opponent starts teching you stomp into whatever meaty setup or safejump for the matchup or frame trap. rinse and repeat and punish hard when you get to touch the opponent.
against grapplers you need to zone until you get a knockdown and get your perfect meaty timings down while they have no bar. most grapplers have no wakeup options until they have bar.
you wont be able to be hyper aggressive like with adon because most onis mixups are unsafe.
btw his 50/50 set ups come off his block strings into lightkick slash which leaves you at -2. from there you have a few options, early grab which is the “safest” and beats out the opponents jab. crouch tech will tech the opponents grab, will lowcheck ppl walking backwards but lose to the opponents crouch tech or jab. you can stomp which beats grab and will make certain reversals wiff depending on how early or late you timed it and how early or late the opponent uppercutted. you can also dp which beats everything besides the opponents blocking or backdash. if the opponent late techs it will beat your stomp and throw and dp attempts after slash, but you are then free you crouch jab into another string or use a late crouch or back medium punch or crouch hardpunch to frame trap.
edit-off of any combo ending in hk tatsu you can dash forward once and immediately stomp to make any quick rise dp whiff, it also beats wake up jab, grab or tech. if they didnt quick rise then owell.
his stepkick on block leaves you at minus one, you cant really do anything that the opponent cant beat by tapping jab twice, no normal or kara grab will beat out the opponent tapping jab twice after a blocked stepkick, stomps wont hit quick enough either. the only things you can do is either try to delay a walk forward kara grab or crouch fierce to try and catch the second jab, orrrr if your sure they are pressing buttons after your stepkick then wait till you have two bar and ultra stocked then dp fadc ultra after a blocked stepkick ala ken masters.
And another failure for proper frame data… In all the sites I read the step kick being +2 and got so happy.
Is there no way I can stepkick from a range and counterhit their jabs? I have no options past DP to stop them pressing buttons?
Also, why does early grab beat jabs? I’ve noticed this also happens with Adon and is also in Adon’s post-jagga kick mixup game but don’t understand the mechanics of it, shouldn’t jab beat everything but a backdash and DP?
So, what mixups do I go for and how do I counterhit grab attempts? I’ve been converting off of counterhits from cr lp cr lp b mp and I’m assuming it’s catching throw tech attempts. I kara grab with F HP, yes?
About the stepkick question, after stepkick you can try to target combo one( f+jab then medium punch). it beats out three button techs or delayed techs but will lose to 2 quick jabs. its hard to make his stepkick good against ppl that know the match up, if you try to frame trap the two jabs then either youll go too fast on your button and the jabs wont come out and youll wiff, or the jabs will come out and stuff you. if you try to kara grab the range at which youll actually grab them gets stuffed by jabs. the key is delaying just the right amount to get anything to work. if the opponent catches on to you delaying your buttons then he will use his medium punches and kicks into specials to push you out. but then you can stomp those. then the opponent can wait and punish the stomps. imo its too much work to get his stepkick to be good.
throws are four frame and have this wierd property that if they trade with a normal like a jab then they will throw it. thats why instances where you throw at a range where you wouldnt normally be able to throw the opponent, you land your throw. its because the opponent pressed a button and you threw the extended limb. unless you worked in a throw tech into the normal like a crouch medium punch or kick or lightkick youll get thrown. a crouching jab gets thrown the most because its the only normal that cant have a crouch tech with it, so a early grab off of the slash mixup beats ppl that mash jab. walk up throw or meaty throws also beat ppl that wake up jabs.
ive been scoring a lot of counterhits with crouch hard punch. crouch jab crouch jab walk up kara throw, then walk up crouch hardpunch. that thing beats out a lot of normals. it really depends on your style really. because oni can make a block string out of any one of his normals you can delay a ton of stuff for counterhit baits. back med punch, back med punch, neutral med punch. back med punch(delay), crouch hardpunch.
the range at which your back med punch wont connect anymore is where you should be stringing into neutral medium punch, med kick 1st hit, stand light kick, or crouch med kick for the lowcheck.
and yes you should be kara grabbing with his forward hardpunch because its the farthest and easiest imo.
oni at his core at highlevel play isnt about his mixups, its about his ability to string most of his normals together and to delay enough to fish for counterhits, and to convert off of any touch.
edit-
oni used to have an ok selection of unblockables and safejumps/fakecross ups/light knee land left or right setups off of stomp and forwardthrow in the corner, but delay wakeup has made this a moot point.
his crossup slash and stomp and airdash mixups are only good against ppl that dont know the matchup, against ppl that do you get blown up.
his bnbs havent changed from 2012 to ultra. the frame data on the moves that matter havent changed nor have any of the hitboxes, so he hasn’t gained any new toys sadly.
if you land any combo into lk slash you can red focus, you can try to shenanigan a blocked mk or hk blocked slash into red focus for a cheesy crumple.
