[Oni + Evil Ryu] SF4 Characters as SF3 Sprites

How the fuck do you guys do this

The ones on the front page all look excellent except. C. Viper, though, seems to be lacking some shading on her face and hair.

Also, I think you’ve overlooked that 3rd Strike doesn’t use widescreen ratios. The SFIV characters are fine, but the others are stretched!

I’m not an expert at this, but I believe you’re right, SFIII is 4:3 aspect ratio. However, because they use those old CRT TVs for display back then, the pixels are actually non-square pixels (they’re taller than they are long). So the image is actually a little stretched (Storage Aspect Ratio) until it displays on the TV (Display Aspect Ratio). Since computer monitors use square pixels, the image looks squashed. (Somebody with better knowledge on this please correct me ^^;)

The screenshots I took are from loading the game without changing the aspect ratio.

Also the sprite rips from the site I used for reference: http://www.zweifuss.com/index.htm also reflect the stretched aspect ratio.

I designed the sprites with a little ‘squashing’ in mind, but I’m not sure if they would translate well into 4:3. ^^;

Well, since circular objects like the moon and bike wheels are stretched, can’t it be assumed that Capcom purposely made their sprites this way to account for whatever squashing would happen on the arcade screens?

I’m just not sure if my sprites would make the conversion without looking wonky (esp. Rufus)

Abel: I think this is one made the conversion well

Dan: Would probably like the stance to be wider

Fuerte: This one looks fine

Gen: His head is majorly squashed

Gouken: I’d probably shrink his upper body

Rufus: Looks squashed, since he’s Rufus, his size needs to be more horizontally represented…and his head is squashed :\

Seth: Since this one was pretty much the Urien sprite, it looks ok

Viper: I’d tweak her head size, especially her hair

In retrospect, I shoulda noticed this before I did these, but they’re for fun, so whatever :blush:

I’m probably not going to go back and edit them, but if I make more in the future, I will keep the display aspect ratio vs. storage aspect ratio in mind. Thanks for bringing it up Dysan_ :wink:

damn, do you know if there is a similar site that has the alpha game’s characters?

Edit: i ask because i haven’t been able to find many usable pictures and animations of Adon, most i come across are very small and in only 1 costume color. the site you linked has everything i could want from a character.

www.fightersgeneration.com has images for almost every character in every fighting game ever made (check the characters section).

It’s not as complete as the ones on that SF3 site, but they do have a few Adon sprites. All the same costume color though :\
