One Piece Thread: Gear 2nd!

Zoro is Japanese and has no sense of direction whatsoever… I don’t think Oda takes nationality and race seriously.

but when is an asian bein lost a stereotype?

ohhhh shit not to mention his dad left home to pursue his dream,he ran with a gang, the town didn’t like him, aw shit:wtf: But it seems he has learned the ways of the jungle is now more an asset to the team than ever

lol…i didnt even take into the account of no dad…but i can let that slide…since it seems no one had parents in this show. its like oda created peter pan and the lost kids as a pirate crew.

Interesting it does seem like all the parents died or left during their early years. We have no clue about Brooke though.

Black people being liars is not a stereotype I’m familiar with. That’s my point, the character traits Oda has created aren’t manifestations of racial setereotypes, just personas for a fictional story.

Technically, by the same notion Yassop is also black and he’s the greatest sniper in the world and on one of the strongest pirate crews in the world.

Shanks

Spoiler

Is a Irishman who parties all day and gets drunk all the time.

usopp would tell exaggerated ass stories as lies. that is a steriotype…i know madd niggas who loved the spot light and tell these be it entertaining stories but they were clearly lies. i know a bunch of friends who have had similar niggas in there lives.

yasopp and shanks crew are never really focused on…so its not really helping bring a positive view of black people. blacks in anime…get the shit end of the stick.

I think fisher tiger and jinbei are good portrayals of blacks. But u gotta read blaster knuckle its like a black version of gutz set in the south reconstruction era

You’re reading too much into it, maxx. I’m pretty sure the “loud, braggart” ghetto stereotype isn’t internationally known beyond perhaps what rap gets distilled throughout the world.

Even if Ussop WAS/IS based off of stereotypes, you’re completely overlooking his positive traits that ultimately overshadow that “liar and loudmouth” persona when things matter most.

If Ussop was really based off of black stereotypes and no other characterization, then he would have gotten the fuck out of dodge permanently the first time anything remotely supernatural happened and never looked the fuck back.

I always thought Mr. 5 was Hispanic more than black. Just like how I think that Mr. 1 is Arabic even though some people seem to think he’s black just because of big lips.

Lol.

Double lol.

Triple lolz.

Combo breaker!

That’s a good point and it certainly makes sense from a story standpoint, especially when I was expecting drama to be had from her just having arrived there given that so far most of the plot on Fishman Island has been fueled by misunderstandings. It’s still odd to see that Sanji is more pissed off than her, even if it’s not surprising considering he’s “back to normal”.

Not really surprising considering what huge fucking bastards they are.

Oh, I agree and whatever “race”/color Otohime ends up being doesn’t matter to me. I was merely humoring Mr. Explosion over there.

i have trouble reading anything that has to do wit racial issues. i got my own going on…especially right now.

Whats going on with you . Do we gotta raid boston that weak ass town aint about shit.

g/f mom is racist. and a internet stalker apparently.

sorry you gotta deal with some isht like that dude

oh wow man its fucked up you gotta deal with this shit in real life

Because seeing Sanji act as the mature one would be weird. Besides, it’s a common enough literary device to have the person you’re expecting to react the most dramatically handle the situation in a mature manner while someone else who’s less involved overact.

If you think about it, you can actually relate the whole human vs. fish/merman thing to any form of interracial/societal tension we see today (arabs, jews, etc.). However, adding the whole MLK/Malcolm X dynamic with Otohime/Fisher Tiger does give it a whole, solid real world foundation that people can relate to more easily. That said, the martyred leader trope is pretty common in literature and especially animé (no doubt thanks in part to Gundam).

You’re right, d3v. My Trope-fu has…become weak.

I must commit tabbuku to rectify this great shame.

opens TVTropes while crying “Profound sadness!” as a mantra

I was going to mention this. The Blaster Knuckle manga was a complete anomaly that came out during the time when black characters in manga were dark faced, wide eyed, hot dog lipped buffoons.
The black characters in this book were actually made to be… gasp… human, with the same emotional and mental range as their white counterparts. Yeah, this book was clearly ahead of its time and it really sucked that it got canceled (just when I was hooked on it too) :bluu:

ANYway, back to One Piece:

I love the way Jinbei just ignored a raging Sanji.
Where did Sanji get that huge tea cup for the princess??
I had forgotten about that tar logia guy… whathisname?
I hope Fisher Tiger has EYE LASERS!

TEA! <3

Thank you for that…illuminating post, SWBeta.

A better question to ask is how Sanji made tea so quickly.

Swamp Logia guy’s name is “Caribou” IIRC, though it’s probably just easier to remember him as Judge Doom or Numa Numa.

Also…eye lasers? What?

Thanks voodazz for reminding me to start reading Blaster Knuckle again! I completely forgot about it since I got a new laptop.
