One of the hardest things to do in Street Fighter

Picking a main, and I’am not even joking. I’ve gone through so many “mains” I really don’t know what my main is.
You could say It’s the character you play the most, win with the most, know the most, or like the most.
Me, I can’t pick. How do I make up my mind, I can’t settle on my main.

I tend to think it’s the one you “go back to” the most cause that would make the most sense to me.
What do you guys think?
Tell me why you pick your main, I need reasons to justify it, I need some opinions here!!

wait. is this a choose my character thread in disguise?

I’m not asking for anyone to choose my main, how did you get that from what I typed?
Anyways I just want advice from other on why they choose their main so maybe to give myself some insight to the quandrum I’am in.

ok, just checking. anyway i’d play whichever character feels most natural to you for your play style. so the first thing i would do is to figure out how you want to play the game. ask yourself are you defensive? do you prefer to sit and wait, or do you like to rush in?

then pick someone who fits what you want to do or compliments your weaker areas

I think you are right on your 4th line, when you keep loosing with one and the other one and another one, you always tend to go back to that certain character that makes you feel like you can actually win with him/her, that is your MAIN.

Pretty sure this is better placed in the Newbie Saikyo Dojo?!

What I did from ~memory:

  1. Look at Style/Personality/Story of every character and exclude the “never ever” ones (Adon, Blanka, Dan, Hakan, Oni, Rufus, T.Hawk, Zangief)

  2. Play around with everyone and exclude whomever I totally couldn’t see me playing due to whatever, ex strange Special Moves (Elf, Guy, Claw, Sagat)

  3. Think about which Playstyle I would prefer and exclude whoever didn’t fit that (didn’t really come to a conclusion other than “no extreme zoning”: Guile, Dhalsim)

  4. Look at Style/Personality/Story again and exclude more. Yes, I do think this is a very important aspect! If I don’t like which character is “representing” me and how the guy that I mostly see on my screen looks like, I’ll dislike the game (Akuma, Cammy, E.Ryu, Dictator, Sakura, Seth, Yun)

  5. Think about stuff I would like to have on my character (A projectile and/or a Command Throw: Boxer, Ibuki, Gen)

  6. Think about preferred playstyle again (Zoning over Rushdown, Tools for all Ranges would be cool: Abel, Honda, Fei, Makoto)

  7. Play around with all and remove who don’t feel that good after all because of whatever (Viper, DJ)

  8. Look at who is left. Those are all “viable Mains” and now basically come down to get sorted. (For me, those were: Chun, Cody, Gouken, Juri, Ken, Rose, Ryu, Yang)

  9. Read on forums, guides etc how those characters are correctly played, watch Matchvids etc and remove who doesn’t look fun enough (Rose, Ryu, Yang)

  10. Do I prefer normal or charge controls? Exclude others (Chun)

  11. What would I like my character to have? (Mobility, Good Throwgame, Tools for all Ranges, High Damage, … meh this isn’t really helping)

  12. What do some of those characters have which I DON’T need - implying they’re worse at stuff I like then (Good reversal game: Ken)

  13. Play what’s left over more and sort by “who just feels good” and, yes, Style again (What I came up with: 1.Juri 2.Cody 3.Gouken)

I’m pretty sure what’s important for you differs greatly for everybody though, so I’m not sure how much this helps.

Sounds like you’re stuck at Point 8), got a list of “viable mains” and play all of those 5-15 guys without really getting close to who you should prioritize.
Think more. Search for the “whoah” feeling. What do you really want? And, important: Don’t get caught up in Tierlists, Matchup discussions and whatever.
Curse yourself afterwards that you just HAD to pick the char that was on the bottom of the Tierlist and had its worst matchups against the Toptiers.
But don’t base your pick on that. Yeah, you’d probably be more successful if you did, but you’d have less fun either way.

The only thing that’s really general is that it’s better to exclude people bit by bit rather than the other way round which doesn’t really lead to anything.
Possible things to base the expulsions on:

  1. Style (Looks, Story, …)
  2. General Playstyle Preference (Rushdown, Zoning, …)
  3. Whatever you really want on a character (Projectile, Divekick, Command Throw, …)
  4. Control preferences (Charge, Normal)
  5. Difficulty level (Don’t play Viper/Gen when starting out)
  6. “Feel” while playing the character (Difficult to describe. I get that “whoah” feeling when I play any of my top 5, particulary Juri/Cody)
  7. Affinity with other characters (don’t play Elf if you want to learn as much as possible about other characters at the same time)
… probably more, this is just off the top of my mind

I started playing during release of ae, i was playing Chun-li as my “main” at the time. I was playing vs a friend and he was messin around and he randomly picked Cody(never knew he existed at the time lol) something just clicked, i loved everything about him, cool moves, cool combos and awesome ultras. He’s the only char i play now…i have a hard time trying to pick up a secondary char. I have like 900 games of Cody and about 20 of other characters ;p.

It is better in the Saikyo board…we also already have a similar thread going (check 3-4 pages in on the ssf4 boards…too much shit going on for me to link it for you right now…)

Hardest thing? Facing ANYONE using Zangief, Vega, Blanka, M. Bison, Balrog Gulie, Chun-Li, and Adon. And canceling.

Losing without blaming lag.

On-Topic: I picked Chun-Li, because I’ve been using her since SFII and always have. I had cousins who used all of the shotos, Guile and Dictator, so I just picked her, to be different, and I’ve loved her since then.

You don’t pick your main, your main picks you.
