Those eyes remind me of Christopher Lloyd in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

So I just won a free copy of SFxT over at Walmart. There was a little tournament and a few of the guys had sticks and shit. I had to pick Bison and play like it was AE, but I won. I have to show up at midnight to get it. Anyone wanna join?

Damn dude that is hella dope! I’ll be picking up the Twins and Lopez at around 6:30 tonight and then we’ll be headed to the LAN center in Lakehood. If you wanna join us just give me a call or something, phone number on my facebook page. We can all head there at on the way back go pick up your copy, but that’s all up to you.

Ooops, I should’ve specified. The midnight release. I get it for free, but not early.

Well pick up offer still stands. If you wanna hangout with us I don’t think this time will be free for you though.

Btw, SFxT Bison is WEIIIIRD. I won’t be touching him. I played with Rolento, Bob, Kazuya, King, Heihachi and Law. Rolento and Law are really fun, and Heihachi is SICK. I would’ve tried more, but I REALLY wanted that free copy so I rocked Bison/Heihachi.

Andrew it occurs to me that I don’t have your number yet I should grab that at some point.
Also when did you register the motel for(how long)?
Who all is going? I know so far it was Andrew, Chris, Adam, and myself. Andrew will be driving there so whoever wants in his car better call dibs.

I’m still debating on the best way to go, so far I’m looking at
Plane is ~300$ round trip for a 2hour flight.
Train is ~120$ for a 20hour round trip
Carpooling for 755miles 12 hour trip

Depending on who else is down I think I’m just gonna hop on a train.

120 round trip doesn’t sound right to me. When I looked it was like 120 down, 175 back up.

I plan on heading down. I will go with whichever ends up being the cheapest option, so I would likely prefer the carpool.

Where are you guys driving too? Cali?

Dear Friends,

March 8, 2012 will be my last day at Gabi’s. After some grueling soul searching and analysis I have finally come to the conclusion that OCC, as far as a competitive gaming stand point, is a huge sink hole. It is true that OCC is a “free” venue but also limits our freedom in ways that I feel holds us back from our true potential. We are treated with little respect. We have no space. We are constantly hassled for the placement of our bodies and chairs, and finally we are accused of being a part of theft at the very least. For the 2-3 years we have been there, there has been no incidents of thefts that we “seem” to be a part of and at the first incident of theft at OCC we are apparently responsible for security issues of merchandise near our “play” area. I especially don’t agree with the stringent wishy-washy rules that are set and can be changed on a whim based on the mood of the established owner. I also disagree with the owners rules of disapproving competitive fighting game tournaments with cash payout. According to her she doesn’t approve of gambling when in fact our tournaments were not ever illegal or considered a form of gambling. Any and all outside players will never take our venue at OCC seriously and in the end will not take us seriously.

The Other Side gaming center is willing to work with us for more than a decent price for membership costs, and tournament entrée frees. They have setups there! Sure it may not be the best but at least we have the option of 5 TV’s to play on at any time and any additional setups that we bring in to use, compared to 1 setup at OCC and a max of three. Not to mention access to high quality internet for streaming and even a commentary booth! A membership at $25 a month for 12 hrs + of game time equates to $1.92 an hour which is more than affordable in anyone’s budget and I truly believe that this is a GREAT price that is beneficial for merchant and customer alike. If you can’t make it once or twice a month with arranged carpools then $5 tournament venue fee is always a great option for anyone. Rides and carpools can be worked out in advance and there are two bus terminals nearby making bus travel fairly simple. The location being in between Olympia and Tacoma is an ideal crossroads for any and all outside competition. With extra setups we can devote more organized time to playing and less time on waiting for games. I know that the location, the times, and the price point isn’t for everyone but I believe that it is within reason and that we should support them and support them hard for as long as we can.

You all know that there is NO VENUES for us in Lacey and Olympia. If they do exist then they are extremely hard to find. I feel we have a golden opportunity and if we don’t support it full heartedly then we will lose it and who knows when we’ll get it again. I don’t wish to create factions, but I truly believe that this is the way forward and I am going to concentrate on promoting this place and organized events at TOS. I consider all of you good friends but I also cannot sit ideally and wait for everything to fall in place like magic. I need to make things happen and to push the community as a whole in an organized direction. I am not a native and the possibility of me leaving WA is high, however I am trying my hardest to create a foundation that will have a hard time eroding despite my absence. I truly believe that we have strong players in all fighting games and that with enough focus and a clear direction we can be a strong force in the northwest. Not only competitively but also in production value and entertainment.
I also feel that in some degree that there is very little appreciation for things that people do for each other in this community. When has anyone offered Jordan, Andrew, Jay and I any compensation for gas or vehicle maintenance? When has anyone ever sat down and sincerely expressed their appreciation for Rcaido and Mother Russiastay tuned for 1st year anniversary of Mother Russia ? Point in case is that there is a lack of appreciation or compensation to what people do for each other and that has to stop. Communication lines have to be open for every and all aspects whether it is organization, game performance, or anything else related to the scene. You are all very welcoming and kind but all this passiveness has to be addressed. It has its time and place but not when it’s time to move out.

If anyone wants to talk to me in person, on Thursday, you are more than welcome to. If you can’t wait till Thursday then reach me on facebook, twitter, skype, steam, phone, and email or coconut shell. I will listen and I will discuss it civilly. If ANY OF YOU NEED something from me you know how to reach me and where to find me. I hope you can all see that I am doing this not because I live closer to this venue or that this benefits me somehow, because it doesn’t, but because I believe that benefits and the goals of the future outweigh the small sacrifices that must be made.

-Joshua “Leafman” Kaneakalau

First of all, let me be the first one on here to tell you that things will really suck at OCC without you, and that you have by far brought the most to the scene down here. Streaming equipment, technical knowledge, all the way down to lolipops. I know you’ve worked your ass off to find a new place, and I think you’re almost there, but I do have a few gripes that I’ll get to later in this post.

But first, about OCC. I agree with everything you’re saying. It’s too small, too dependent upon the mood of the owner, and there are too many eggshells that we have to tiptoe around, so to speak. I don’t like being under the suspicion of stealing, either. However, this isn’t going to stop me from going to our events at OCC until the very last moment we can, either due to us getting kicked out or us finding something else Thursday nights to replace it. I know that you’re trying to illustrate that the price point at this other venue isn’t bad, but I have to reiterate: **You can’t beat free. **I don’t work a whole lot of hours, and I have bills and textbooks which ultimately have to come first. To somebody in my position, not having to pay for something I enjoy immensely is HUGE. It’s one of the things that has kept me involved in the fighting game community, knowing that I only need to make the financial investment for my sticks and my games, console, and my electricty (which is paid for by my apartment complex, even).

I understand that you get what you pay for, and this place up in Lakewood is sick. I really like it there. What is going to keep me from going isn’t the idea of paying, but the method in which I would be paying. I really don’t want to pay $25 a month for something I’m not guaranteed to use. I understand that I can get rides set up, but what if I have other plans on a night where there is going to be a tournament, or for some reason can’t make it? I’ve just sunk money into something that I didn’t put to use, and that doesn’t sit well with me.

In addition to the free aspect of OCC, I like the fluid nature of the event. I have other plans Thursday? No problem, I’ll just show up for a few hours and leave, or just not show up at all. In that respect, it’s actually the closest thing we have to an old fashioned arcade experience.

I know nothing is set in stone, and that you’re still working with these guys, but try and keep in mind some of the things I’ve said here. I’m sure I’m not the only person here who might be wary for the same reasons. If I could get hooked up with a reasonable price to pay just to go to tournaments we host there, and pay only for what I use, I’m on board.

Edit

I just re-read your post, and I saw the part with venue fees for $5. Just to be clear, I can attend tournaments there, pay the $5 venue fee, and not have to be a “member”? That’s really the most important thing for me.

I cannot argue that free is a huge selling point. It’s just that professionally OCC offers us nothing. No room to grow, no room to expand, and no room for experimentation. Its like we have a fucking Shelby Ford Mustang engine inside a fucking VW Bettle. The potential for speed is there, but with out changing the rest of our specs we can’t obtain our max speed. If we want experience against other character match ups we’ll just hop online. We want frame data and access to forums? Its at our fingertips and we can have it open constantly. You want to print out tournament brackets? Head over to the booth and BAMN! I believe that as people and even as customers we deserve much more. If anything we have brought business to OCC and should not have any separation anxiety at all.

To answer the price point question; Yes, the membership is only worth it if you can make it to the venue once or twice a week the other thing about being a member is that you don’t ever have to pay venue fees for tournaments. The venue fee is set in place for people that can’t commit to a monthly standard and just wish to participate in tournaments; which is still a steal because you can show up and play casuals hours before the tournament actually starts.

You guys both make valid points. Keep the discussion going…

Josh post

  • Better venue, more competitive atmosphere, probably will level up, scene can really expand/boom if all commit
  • FG community are broke or cheap as hell. No one wants to pay for anything. Its not in Olympia & will probably lose at least 1/2 of the community.

Drew post

  • Convenience, free, already establish local place, very causal setting
-treated like 2nd class citizen, seem to have plateau, setups/space, no money tourney

I think the negatives are too extreme for both sides. From what im hearing about OCC, i wouldn’t want to go there anymore. I already had bad vibes when i used to go there & definitely dont want to be treated like a child or worse accuse of theft. As for this place in Lakewood, when i do have free time last thing i want to do is drive all the way up there & still have to pay for monthly membership i can never really commit to do.

This is pretty tough decision, would like to hear from everyone on their thoughts…
