First of all, let me be the first one on here to tell you that things will really suck at OCC without you, and that you have by far brought the most to the scene down here. Streaming equipment, technical knowledge, all the way down to lolipops. I know you’ve worked your ass off to find a new place, and I think you’re almost there, but I do have a few gripes that I’ll get to later in this post.
But first, about OCC. I agree with everything you’re saying. It’s too small, too dependent upon the mood of the owner, and there are too many eggshells that we have to tiptoe around, so to speak. I don’t like being under the suspicion of stealing, either. However, this isn’t going to stop me from going to our events at OCC until the very last moment we can, either due to us getting kicked out or us finding something else Thursday nights to replace it. I know that you’re trying to illustrate that the price point at this other venue isn’t bad, but I have to reiterate: **You can’t beat free. **I don’t work a whole lot of hours, and I have bills and textbooks which ultimately have to come first. To somebody in my position, not having to pay for something I enjoy immensely is HUGE. It’s one of the things that has kept me involved in the fighting game community, knowing that I only need to make the financial investment for my sticks and my games, console, and my electricty (which is paid for by my apartment complex, even).
I understand that you get what you pay for, and this place up in Lakewood is sick. I really like it there. What is going to keep me from going isn’t the idea of paying, but the method in which I would be paying. I really don’t want to pay $25 a month for something I’m not guaranteed to use. I understand that I can get rides set up, but what if I have other plans on a night where there is going to be a tournament, or for some reason can’t make it? I’ve just sunk money into something that I didn’t put to use, and that doesn’t sit well with me.
In addition to the free aspect of OCC, I like the fluid nature of the event. I have other plans Thursday? No problem, I’ll just show up for a few hours and leave, or just not show up at all. In that respect, it’s actually the closest thing we have to an old fashioned arcade experience.
I know nothing is set in stone, and that you’re still working with these guys, but try and keep in mind some of the things I’ve said here. I’m sure I’m not the only person here who might be wary for the same reasons. If I could get hooked up with a reasonable price to pay just to go to tournaments we host there, and pay only for what I use, I’m on board.
Edit
I just re-read your post, and I saw the part with venue fees for $5. Just to be clear, I can attend tournaments there, pay the $5 venue fee, and not have to be a “member”? That’s really the most important thing for me.
