OLD UIUC 2011 Thread

saw that on youtube, looks pretty

I would love to do this. Bring the heat. I’m all for it.

I want to take my game to the next level, so starting a bigger scene is the best thing for everyone trying to get there.

That is what I hope the purpose of these new Champaign ranbats is. Getting people used to tournament formats and the added stress of playing limited matches.

So yeah this is how its gonna go Friday:

If its cool with Brian, it will be at his new place since he has the most room.

So the games we will play (and everyone has to play) are: SF4 and TvC. Also if we have time I kinda wanna have a third that everyone votes on friday.

J gets his tourney cherry popped and now he’s all for some SF4. I love it haha.

Fuck yea man, we need more hype!! I really want to get more people to come out and play on game nights and what not, and with this being a college town, I see no reason we shouldn’t have a HUGE scene out here. There is no fucking way that we are the only guys playing fighting games seriously out here. There has to be AT LEAST 200 people on campus who play SF4. Of those 200, at least 50 are likely to want to be a part of a scene, and just have no idea that our little group exists. We could easily have a SoCal type group of guys in terms of size if we really made our selves known to the college kids around us. I seriously think there is a lot of untapped potential here.

I figure the easiest way to handle this is to go door to door and ask people if they play SF4 or other fighting games. Then we go from there.

Seriously though, we need to find a way to find the serious players in our area and get them out to play. You’d be surprised how many people don’t even know threads like these exist because they are too busy shoving their noses up the SF4 forums’ ass that they don’t see the rest of SRK.

Let’s make it happen guys. The only thing I can think of is we all need to pitch in and get a serious tourney going, and talk to everyone that isnt familiar there, and tell them about our scene. That way if they are in the area or attending UofI/Parkland, they will know about us.

So James, if your as serious about getting a tourney ran as I am, let me know man.

PS:

“So the games we will play (and everyone has to play) are: SF4 and TvC. Also if we have time I kinda wanna have a third that everyone votes on friday.”

Then I have a funny feeling you better bring CvS2 with you Friday night.

best way imo would be to just put up some flyers or something, door to door would be way too slow since if there are even say 1000 kids here that would want to come, there’s over 45000 kids attending school here so that would take forever to spread word

also am i the only one that thinks juri’s custom combo ultra looks like utterly shitty? <_<

If I’m there, good luck getting me to play TvC. If I’m forced to play that, I’m forcing everyone to play SF2HF on nFBA for at least 3 hours straight

haha if you really dont wanna play tvc you dont have to haha

Honestly fighting games are just not that popular.

Im glad enough we got as many serious players as we do since before SF4 there was like 3 of us left once others graduated.

Just thing about numbers here:

New york city: millions of people yet there really isnt that big of a number of serious players. Their biggest tournies on the EC only get like 150-200 people for sf4.

Champaign: 40k. The fraction of people to fighting game players kinda makes since that we only have about 20 max. It sucks but its kinda true. People just dont really like serious fighting games.

I am sure there are others in champaign playing SF4 its just that they either are super casual players or foreigners who play amongst themselves.

I vote 3s.

The best way to promote is probably to bring back school’s fighting game club and try to attract people on Quad day or other events. This will also allow to get funding/building to host large tournaments right here in Champaign. Or we can try to get serious smashers to be interested since they’re already somewhat acquainted. I hear there’s actually a pretty big scene here.

lol trying to get the smash scene to play anything other than smash is pretty hard. The Melee scene wont play anything but Melee and the Brawl scene is non-existent.

I don’t see why you wont even give it a try. I’m playing SF4 even though I have no clue what I’m doing.

well, even if the smashers don’t play of (better  ) games, they will at least give us publicity and who knows, with the exposure to other games, some may switch.

I dunno how strict school club rules are (off-campus game-nights among other things) but its probably something to read up on. The funding and ability to organize tournaments in school buldings would be nice too, and quad day would get us hella promotion.

History time:

We were an actual RSO for a little while before things kinda went kaput.

We had a few tournys ran at the Union as apart of Illinites on friday nights. We would usually run both Melee (with help from the local smash players) and then either a Street Fighter Game or Guilty Gear since at the time more people here played GG than street fighter. We would get some money for prizes that would be distributed among the top 3. I think 1st would get a check for like 120 bucks and 2nd would get 70. I got a 120 and a 70 dollar one before for winning 3s and getting 2nd in 3s the two times we did 3s. Problem was that we sometimes would not get the check for a looooong time. One time it took months and lots of bickering.

Sad thing was that mayyybe only like 2-3 of the smash players would play in the SF/GG tournys and THEY WERE FREE! Free entry and cash prizes! But, it was just the same people in our group at the time playing.

When Chris/Jerry/Yosh were still here they actually did do a Quad day set up and we did get a good amount of names and emails. We sent out emails about our get togethers and when we were playing but besides like one dude, noone responded or showed up.

Besides the Illinites tournys at the union, we really didnt get much going by even being an RSO. When me, Scott, and Mike ran Bring on the Paign! we only got that building because at the time Scott was still in the CS department.

Pretty much the only way we get new actually players is when they do join SRK and come to our thread. I even sometimes message everyone on SRK that says they are from Illinois and see if they live around here.

Ok and yes, I do really want to get a real tourny going sometimes soon again here in Champaign. People from all around the MW that came the Bring on the Paign back in 2007 have been asking me since then when Bring on the Pain 2 will happen. It will take a group effort however. I do not have quite the cash to put down for a hotel convention room but if we all pool together we might be able to pull it off at a nice venue. That is unless SOMEONE HERE IS A CS MAJOR or APART OF A DEPARTMENT THAT WOULD ALLOW YOU TO RESERVE A BIG ROOM FOR AN EVENT. hehe just wonderin.

Also this is for Scott:

CONGRATS ON GETTING HITCHED!

Hope it was a fun wedding!

Oh shit congrats scott!

As for a champaign tourney, count me all in to help in any way that I can.

I don’t have any ties to the CS department any more like I used to…but maybe Dennis can ask around a bit?

I’m all for growing our group, but we need to do it in a smart way so we don’t end up with a huge logistics nightmare (students often don’t have rides, they can be flaky on attendance, etc…).

Plus space…even in the new location, there isn’t a whole lot of space. If we tried to add 10 people, I’m pretty sure it would be a huge issue for Brian and Tara, cause their neighbors WOULD complain about the noise for sure.

Just some thoughts to consider, sorry if they are more on the cautionary side.

Thing is I dont think we’ll get 10 more people.

If Super is doing a midnight release, Imma be there and maybe see if there are new people.

I went into gamestop and checked with them, they aren’t doing any kind of event or pad tourney for Super.

I told them about our group, trying to see if they were interested in some exhibition matches or something for the hype, but the guy seemed like he was surprised that we even care about super.

LOL

Anyone that will take part in TvC this Friday (which should be all of you) should watch this video. It teaches you the basics and all the game mechanics. It even teaches you how to get out of the giant’s throws.

Check this amazing art out.

Zombie Chun and Zombie Ken are actually my favorites. Zombie Ibuki is a close third place.
