(OLD) Ken General Discussion Thread (Combos, Techniques, etc.)

So If I’m in block strings against characters with command grabs [Gief, Hawk ect] and get out of jail DP type moves [Fei Long, Dudley, Shoto’s, ect] and I did not do safe mixups during the blockstrings [lk, lp] but decided to go for more mixups involving [MK, MP] could these characters [with command grabs/DP-like attacks] interrupt [mash out] the mixups/strings even if I don’t mess up the links?

You’ll get beat out every time unless you do a true blockstring by canceling cr.lp’s and cr.lk’s. Aside from far st.mp, all the variations of kens mp’s and mk’s aren’t safe on block or don’t have enough blockstun for a safe followup.

as a 3s chun player I know how important it is to shut this down all too well. so would I just blatantly srk it? jab it? what beats it? I don’t own the game but I am going into theory fighter mode tonight since I want to play ae tomorrow at a tournament and try to do well.

I know srk has invincibility in the active frames and the lp version has a 3 frame startup on it which is faster than the startup on divekick. The only question is the overhead dk vs shoryuken hitbox here. I would think Srk could win.

Also, after a blocked ex lunge or regular lunge, what would be my options? It looks like an os type of situation since yun has slight frame advantage with the ex lunge and therefore can act 1 frame faster. I’m thinking throw or srk, backdash would be risky, so would jump. How many frames does it take for a throw to come out in this game? I know in st it’s like the perfect reversal. Bear in mind this is a theoretical situation where yun would be hitting ken with the ex on block. I know in practice a yun could mindgame ken with spacing and then punish the throw whiff.

Anything would beat out a dive kick. The hitbox is horrible! An SRK is a good answer to a dive kick but if you’re hesitant you could stand strong or stand short also.

A throw is 3 frames in this game and there isn’t much you can after a blocked EX Lunge, just block, tech his throw, or SRK. If it’s an unsafe regular Lunge, you can get a free combo usually but they can make it safe by hitting you during the later active frames which is really annoying.

lol that is pretty bad. i keep wondering with this data readily availible why people just don’t smack him out of it. It’s like the goukens that are afraid of tatsu trades… I mean it’s in Gouken’s favor since he can combo off of it.

Gonna be facing a sagat apparently, but… Does that matchup even change? the basic deal is to get in close and safely get combos in while mixing up 'Gat… i know that from st Chun. BTW is Chun worth it in this? I see some chuns like y24, but I don’t see a lot of Chuns that use everything she has. To me she seems good.

Also on links… What are the links I need to know here besides the shorts/jabs?
P.S. Dragon boy was crazy in vanilla. Miss seeing that guy, soo much mixup and rushdown.

I think it’s nerves really, Yun’s dive kick is just irritating.

The Sagat match-up is just about getting around his zoning to start your offense.

I think Chun is a great footsie character, her pokes just seem amazing.

Low short, low jab, low forward into special
Low short, low jab, low fierce into special
Low strong, low forward into special
Low strong , low jab, low forward into special
Close stand forward, low forward into EX Tatsu
Close stand forward into sweep
Stand jab into sweep
Far stand strong into sweep

i don’t know how to send you the animations but if its at all possible could i get a dark green ken, i’m guessing since you said a normal no specials right? i would like a parry animation if possible although it isn’t a normal either but it seems pretty simple

hey guys im pretty new to frame data and was wondering which parts of the frame data is most important? and does empty jump heavy punch have any use in mixup? I use empty jump medium kick on balrog and works most of the time. And for the empty jump low fierce im just talking about any character ken faces in general and was wondering if frame data comes into play with this.

VesperArcade has a frame data video guide.

An empty jump hp isn’t a very good idea because it doesn’t hit low. It’s better to empty jump into a cr.LK or cr.MK because they hit low and your opponent may still be trying to block high from your jump in.
