(OLD) Ken General Discussion Thread (Combos, Techniques, etc.)

Man…since I’m now less than a 1000gp away from the dreaded G1, and their won’t be anyone to play any one down for some mirror matches? I’d love to get some practice in.

^^ add me. ken mirror matches are the best.

No doubt man added ya, I hate it cuz sometimes ill be playing a ken I KNOW I can beat but its something about someone playing the same person as me I get fearful because I know they can pulll off some of the same damaging combos I can and sometimes ill just fold lol. Need some matches in im itching for someone better than me

Does anyone have a guide for Ken spacing, space control, and zoning guide?

To be honest… there is no one guide. Just many snippets here and there. Especially since Zoning is different depending upon match-up.
So for different characters - you’d have to adjust the way you zone.

But generally…
I gave it a good crack a long while ago here:

Under "Spoiler for THE FIRST STEPS. Using Ken"
Especially in the “DISTANCING” category.

Hope this helps.

Very nice guide. Thank!

Let me know, when you update it with more info.

Recognise your name, ggs earlier. I was the Cammy/Sak guy

Besides kara-throw, or cr. mk > FB, what are other good follow ups after an overhead?

I’m not sure how successful a kara throw will be after an overhead. If you’re using an overhead, it’s setting the guy up not to block, so naturally the guy might want to throw out quick pokes or something, which beats throw. Also, expect to be at frame disadvantage after an overhead. Maybe try for a focus or a cross up. If you’re afraid of an epic reversal, backdash.

truth, all of ken’s overheads leave him at disadvantage. so if you want to mix that kara throw in then you need to make them think your gonna overhead with f + rh (hold) then kara-throw forward, play around with it a bit in training mode… this setup has a surprising amount of forward movement involved.

Just uploaded this combo video. Hopefully there are some things that will help everyone out in making Ken a stronger character. Enjoy!

s.mp ~ c.mk xxEX TATSU… very cool. s.mp could be a useful CH setup, I’ll have to mess around with that.

Huh. I didn’t think you could cancel out of a ex. shoryu into a full hit Ultra unless you were countering an attack. Does that only work against larger/longer characters like Sagat, Honda, and Geif?

i meant overhead after hit. forward + hk leaves you at -1, forward + mk leaves you at -2. that’s annoying. block or back dash it is! thanks guys.

you mean back + mk but yeah… they are bad -_-; honestly if i’m in the right range i just try to cross-up

You’re welcome,
I shutter a bit when I read it… so much editing needed to elaborate/fix so many things. But I don’t because it becomes too much MY STYLE of Ken. Ken can be played so many ways - so it’s best not to over direct how to use him.
You’ll make your own mistakes and create your own solutions in the future.

As for updating. I’m afraid I’m learning Akuma now and have no time to write large essays. I’m just a passive speaker in this forum now, checking in from time to time.

An Ed Ma inspired switch? :wgrin:

yep back + mk. forward + hk is a good surprise, specially when a ryu is expecting you to cross up and counter with a dp > ultra but it has no good follow up because if the frame disadvantage.

If you’re referring to the Focus Attack, Fierce SRK – Ultra, then it’s because the opposing character gets launched as though it were a counter hit when attacked out of the crumple animation. Don’t know why it works, but it does… on everyone.

NO! I’m actually not very impressed by Edma’s Akuma at all.
I was maining Ryu… but I ran into so many damn mirror matches it just isn’t fun. Plus… Akuma’s mix-ups and Demon Flips are just down right cool!

Sakura is heaps of fun aswel. Juggle master!
