(OLD) "Dear Doctor!" Ken Match-up and Insight: Ask a question, get an answer!

your probably trying to throw him while he’s in block stun. eg. jab jab throw.

his hitbox wont affect any grabs, however you are right about it being weird. If you can do an ambiguous lk tatsu crossup on a crouching blanka, you can do it on anyone

cr.lp him out of his blanka balls and then k-throw him afterwards. You can use cr.mp but against hp ball it is sooo fast you have to be super quick whereas lp gives you a little more time to react. You can step-kick punish his rainbow balls on block. You just need to be careful for slide (learn the distance to shoot fireballs) and be more patient. x-up lk is good because some blankas will panic and use their ultra on wakeup but it won’t hit you. On your wakeup I think ex srk might get you out of blanka’s ultra shenanigans but I’m not 100% sure.

I know what you mean, my k-throw whiffs so much vs blanka it’s bullshit.

Good to see it’s not just me having problems throwing blanka, either way I’ve learnt to tone down by kara-throw game against him now.

Back when i didn’t how to block blanka’s ultra i used to try and dp it (either mp or EX, sometimes maybe fp depending on the distance) wherever possible, sometimes you’ll beat it clean, other times you’ll trade, get hit or avoid it entirely. Not a very good tactic at getting consistent results but lol.

to beat blankas ultra, jus block the 1st hit low, wich takes no chip then mp srk it will beat it clean,or u could block the hole ultra take the chip and walk foward a tad bit and ultra him back

EX SRK does get you out of Blanka’s ultra shenanigans. You won’t be able to counter it but you will avoid the damage.

y waste a bar wen u could jus get a free mp srk or block it and punish

I think he means when a Blanka does Ultra on your wake up. So if you don’t use a move to escape, you’ll have to guess which direction to block in.

If Blanka does the ultra on your wake up use mp srk to either trade or beat it clean if he does it early. Mp srk will auto correct.

Yeah I meant to get out of Blanka’s ultra on your wakeup if you don’t know if it will crossup or not.

I didn’t know mp srk would work. I’ll have to try it.

MP works. It has enough invulnerability to beat his meaty wake up ultra. It at least keeps you from having to guess a cross up.

I didn’t know you could block the low hit, then mash mp DP to beat it out though. I’ll have to try that.

Thanks for that. I don’t know how many times I’ve mis-timed jumping over his Ultra and besides, I don’t want to run away, I want to smack his chops.

Ok, my turn. I’ve only recently made G2 but I’m more or less holding my own against some half-decent shotos/heavyweights. I just need more practice/better execution. I’ve even finally started having some success with Sagats by simply being patient/boring/pokey pokey. However, Guile is getting right on my tits. I can neither ‘get in’ nor figure out how to make him play. SB > FB so I end up eventually eating an EX if I play that game. I’ll FADC through a few, block a few and then get in close enough to start poking f. MK but his cr.lk goes a decent way to neutering that. As soon as one hit confirms, he goes into EX Flash, which brings me to another problem, i.e. wakeup options. He typically just OST which usually techs my kara attempt. If I attempt to start a block string, his cr. lk always seems to beat me out :frowning: If I attempt a crossup, I eat a Flash. If I SRK out of desperation - yeah, need to ditch that - it’s blocked and I eat whatever. If I back up a bit and make him play/lose charge and try a jump in, I get air-thrown. If I can get in front and make him work for it, then gaps do appear but the smart ones realise they don’t even need to chase the game, just plod along and they’ll grind it out.

People give Ken stick for being a flowchart/scrub character but I see so many Guiles following the same set patterns. Of course, I’m the guy who can’t break it down, but you get my point!

Watch his EX bar, you can play the FB game with Guile easily until he has EX. During that time you should be closing in bit by bit between FBs so you should be ok distance from him now. If they like to hold back and throw booms as you close the distance if he keeps backing up and throwing SBs he’s just going to end up in the corner so play his boring game until you back him up enough.

Once he’s in the corner apply pressure but don’t be too aggressive because he’ll get out and his bs will start all over again (so cross-ups etc aren’t great unless you have a decent lead and just want to break him down more).

Footsies … I’m not really great at that but Guile’s cr.lp and cr.lk are 4f startup where Ken’s cr.mk is 4f startup but cr.lk and cr.lp are 3f startup. I’ve been successful in stuffing some of Guile’s normals with a cr.lp so I try to mix it in with cr.mk. You can walk in cr.mk then back out and do it a few times then walk in and out immediately and throw a fb or something so if he goes to punish what he thinks will be a cr.mk he’ll eat a fb. Focus works ok too but be careful for flash kicks because they have pretty decent range. These kind of footsies are hard to give tips on though, it’s not as simple as move x beats move y you’ll just get better with experience because you need to know how to bait, punish and part of baiting is being able to read your opponents.

You just need to learn how to read your opponent and that will come with time. If he’s OSTing you can just SRK him, but as you said you get punished when you SRK. That’s because he knows your play style and can read what you want to do and when. Save EX more and use them for canceling SRKs it’s a really good tool to have. This way when you have two bars he thinks you’ll SRK so you throw him. Also if you feel REALLY ballsy you can SRK him when you don’t have 2 bars because you’ve conditioned him to think you’ll only SRK when you can cancel (I like doing this one). Also if he ALWAYS OSTs when in a blockstring then you need to forget about k-throwing him and do a delayed SRK (very small delay, enough time to let him out of block stun from your jabs but not enough for his move to enter active frames). His cr.lk shouldn’t beat yours anyways, he’s just pressing the button before you so he’s just poking at random or anticipating your move. If you’re doing it on his wakeup then you need to do the cr.lk a little earlier.

Shouldn’t be the case, you need to time your jump-in better and your jump needs to land on top of his head or just a little bit behind. If you want you can empty jump and land right in front of him as soon as he’s getting up to bait a flash kick. If you time it right it will look like he can hit you but you’ll just land and block it then hk>hk tatsu or your punish of choice.

Jumping is dangerous against Guile, I do it WAYYY too much because the Guile’s I play online don’t punish unless they have a down-charge (for flash). My friend plays a mean Guile though and he rarely flashes, just that HP is enough to knock me out of the air. It’s probably one of the best AA normals in the game … it knocks me out of everything, comes out quick enough and can’t really be baited like an SRK or flash can. You can jump of course but it has to be at an angle where your jump HK would just tap him or just miss him.

That’s satisfyingly comprehensive. I owe you one. I’ve been offline for a few days but did manage to get in a few games this morning and did beat a G2-A Guile by simply playing a bit more dull and gradually to force him to stop just holding DB. As for mind games and reading play style, that’s obviously a massive part of it that only comes with practice. I think I’m generally getting much better at mixing things up, especially against other shotos (whose games I generally know better from experience), but against characters where I can’t find more than one ‘in’, it’s tough when they box off the one weapon I’ve found.

I guess my next match-up question concerns Blanka. I can’t remember beating a single one in G2, except when the other guy was obviously just playing super-casual. I’ve gradually figured out, or at least developed areas I can improve upon, against my previous bugbears: Cammy, Vega, Chun and seems I’m starting to get to grips with Guile (and hopefully moreso once I digest the advice above) but playing Blanka is just a headache.

Things I can work on based on reading this thread and experience: FB spacing to avoid river; cross-up blocking that aerial ball; c.lp (?) stuff his rolling ball; mp srk his Ultra (timing seems tough, tends to trade).

Things that are just puzzling me: his pokes seem faster, stronger and have greater reach than f.mk; his throw/face bite seems to beat out my k-throw every time, I seldom manage to even tech the fucker; seems difficult/impossible to cross up because of electricity; I can’t figure out any kind of FB zoning - mid = river, full-screen = EX ball. So, similar to my problems with Guile, then.

Any help much appreciated…

stanshall. when blanka has ex and (or) charging, no fbs. fb full screen only when u know its safe, ( i sometimes fb from mid screen after a knockdown only when i know its safe, so that i can try to bait river slide which is focasable then easy dmg.

watch out for crossup rainbow ball (especially ex) if the blanka player is good, he can catch with this easy cuz he can control where it moves.

other then that it just comes down to waiting him out and not getting caught with river slide ex b-ball.

learn your normals max distance so you know what to use when he is using elctricity.

also if your quick enough you can jab, mp, or srk him out of his blanka ball even if its ex. and if your quick enough to fp.srk-fadc-ultra you get full animation (due to counter hit) but for this you need what i believe chris hu calls “reaction”

and practice teching throws and you should have some better against the wild man.

c.mp wrecks blanka
use focus against his rainbow so you dont have to guess which direction to block

That’s all good stuff. Thanks, chaps. I think one major element lacking in my game is the use of FA. It’d certainly make two of those sticking points redundant.

anyone got any tips for seth, his mix up is insane,

Oh I forgot, you can crossup Blanka with lk. It has to be properly placed but it will beat his electricity.

If you have trouble using cr.mp against balls then try cr.lp. I found it nearly impossible to catch a HP ball with cr.mp and I kept getting hit where with cr.lp you have more time to react. LP and MP balls can be punished with cr.mp fine.

A note on this. If you want to punish his ball with an ultra be VERY careful. I’ve only attempted it once and failed. Now FP.SRK>FADC>Ultra probably works but a naked ultra didn’t for me (so I never do it anymore). Basically he did a HP Blanka ball, I did my ultra and he went right through me. I saw the same thing happen to another character too (sagat maybe? don’t really remember) so I don’t really recommend it.

I play him a bit not great but some things to look out for:

  • st.hp will go under your fireballs
  • you can poke his st.hp not sure about sweep (I know Gouken can sweep it)
  • If he wall jumps go for mp.srk he’ll usually come in with an attack
  • His divekick is fast if you can then mp.srk him otherwise just block, don’t bother with cr.hp or hp.srk
  • If he gets you in the corner and headstomps you he will most likely go for a crossover (during the stomps)
  • If you get ultra’d and survive then be prepared to get mixed up, either he’ll FB > FADC > teleport or just dash in and cross you up
  • You get headstomped in the air then he can reset you with a divekick or splash (neutral mp) so watch out for mixups afterwards (either a throw or cr.lk into combo)
  • His footsies suck, besides jabs and shorts only mp is any good
  • Air tatsus are a great way to close distance if you don’t abuse them (from most angles it can beat his j.fp)
  • Be ready to lp.srk his j.fp or jback.fp even if it trades it’s in your favor and if he doesn’t stick out a limb lp.srk means you’ll be a bit safer than mp
  • His teleports are easily punishable as long as you’re not throwing an fb
