In regards to this double jeporady thing. So if someone who is tried for murder, wins their case. And new evidence surfaces years latter that proves they did it. It’s irrelivant and that person can never be convicted for it even though there’s undeniable proof now?
Not going to lie, seeing white teachers & white classmates cry & their shock faces were one of my highlights in highschool memories. Also the 8 black people had little more strut in their walk that day.
Can you really? I did not know that. I knew people could get exonerated with new evidence but I thought it didn’t work the other way around. Which really doesn’t make much sense.
Where are some of you seriously getting this? Since when can you violate the 5th amendment by retrying someone for the same crime they were acquitted of? This is Constitution 101. When has this happened, because I’ve never heard of it.
If this were an overturned conviction or a mistrial, then he could be retried since there’s no final decision. But he was acquitted, which is final. Therefore, he cannot be tried for those murders again. At all. Stop spreading false info.
I swear, some of you need to keep your knowledge of Double Jeopardy to a certain game show.
(In other breaking news, water is wet. Film at 11.)
Yeah, the timing of this seems…weird, though ironically the sheer stupidity through which was this was apparently discovered by the LAPD concerning one of their own apparently having “the possible murder weapon” all this time makes me more inclined to believe it’s coincidence than not. Hell, I could see the guy who supposedly had it in his possession this entire time wanting to get it engraved because of the TV series, but beyond that, I doubt there’s an actual connection, much less a conspiracy, especially given how stupid everyone involved seems.
Regardless, as much as I don’t much care for this case or either of the victim’s surviving family, both the LAPD and the guy who had it should really be sued over this and I say this as someone who typically dislikes civil litigation even more than criminal litigation when it comes to how broken the legal system is.
As I understand it, the case technically never closed apparently, even after he was found innocent not guilty, in part because they could never find the murder weapon.
Either way, double jeopardy means that even if the circumstances of this weren’t both understandably suspicious and extremely worthy of suing the LAPD, the legal system can’t really do anything to OJ on murder charges, though it’s not like it matters since as you point out he is already currently in jail due to “karma” (read: bullshit) anyway.
Inb4 the “OJ amendment” wherein if you are black you can be tried twice for the same crime if you allegedly killed white people, or just run to goddamn fast.
I don’t see why I should care honestly. Homicide is common, so he was famous he had absolutely 0 impact on my life or anyone else’s here. He very likely killed someone and I think the guilt of keeping a straight face and the rightful shunning of him is more punishment than any jail.
I remember in 4th grade my [black] teacher abruptly stopped class and wheeled in the television to see the verdict. When it was announced that he was “not guilty” she jumped for joy and started clapping. In the hallway however, an echo of collective groans were heard for a brief while.
None of us at the time knew wtf was going on, but we were happy that we didn’t have to do any work for the rest of the school day.
It wasn’t until the “Chewbacca Defense” episode of South Park a few years later that I really gained an interest in the O.J. case.
