Forgive me, Diek. For I know that this isn’t supposed to be a discussion thread, but I feel I have to respond to some things.
Actually, I believe that the reason that Venom was going to be in was less “Eddie Brock is Anti-Venom” now than it was “(Mac Gargan) Venom isn’t relevant”…somehow, despite him having been in all those Dark Darkness series recently. It’s probably really because he eats people now (though I think he did before or at least threatened to) and is just creepy rather than “creepy-cool” like Brock Venom was. That and they realize they’ll probably piss off people regardless of which Venom they choose, so why bother?
Not sure about Gambit. I don’t think Marvel is, either, though. He’s been going through a lot of changes ever since that Horseman of Death thing happened. It probably doesn’t help his odds that, like Rogue (and quite few other X-Men) he’s had a failed on-going. Of the three, I’d say he’d have the best chance, but that’s probably not saying much…
As for Cyclops, well, Marvel just hates him. They pretty much always have since Wolverine appeared on the scene and started up that love triangle between him, Jean and Wolverine. You know that the universe hates you when basically everyone’s cheering for some guy to steal your wife–who is constantly dying–despite the fact your worst offense is just being kinda bland most of the time; him being at fault for the Madelyne Pryor thing is such bullshit, but I digress. When you’re opposite your company’s biggest cash cow, you’re pretty much fucked.
I mean, growing up, you remember how Cyclops basically got crapped on all the time, right? It’s only gotten worse, recently, between the recent movies basically all being Wolverine-vehicles where he got little to no screen-time–hell, he gets killed off-screen in X3 the first five or ten minutes–and recent comic happenings like the reveal that Professor X mind-raped him “Deadly Genesis”, his second brother being a fucking maniac and his father dying (having been killed by said brother). Hell, it’s gotten to the point where we get things like Wolverine and the X-Men where Wolverine has taken over his leadership and Cyclops is some utterly incompetent, really jealous loner. Right.
Didn’t they make it so that him and Havok weren’t even related in First Class as an excuse to not have him in the movie? Yeah. If all that doesn’t help point out that Marvel hates Cyclops as almost as much Joe Quesada hates Spider-man’s marriage, then I honestly don’t know what does. The only “good” thing that’s happened to him recently is getting with Emma Frost and some people would argue her characterization in the past half a decade is so wildly out of character that she might as well be a different character entirely. The only reason Cyclops probably hasn’t died is because he’s so well-known (as a whipping boy) despite not being classically “popular”.
TL;DR - Venom was said not to be relevant AFAIK. I don’t know why Gambit was rejected, but it’s probably because Marvel has no idea what to do with him. Marvel hates Cyclops, even more nowadays, so the chance of him getting in again is probably infinitesimal.

Ah, I knew I forgot about someone. Then again, I was never sure if she was actually Capcom’s character or the property of the Aliens vs. Predator franchise since I vaguely remember her appearing in a comic or two, in which case she’d be ineligible like Jotaro and Dio from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I might just be getting confused, but Wikipedia has nothing to clear up the issue, so…
Yeah, I’m not sure of what she’s been doing in comics recently since I’ve haven’t read American comics in three years and Wikipedia only goes up to 2010.
However, all that’s relevant is her Nextwave appearance, which wasn’t that far ago. Hell, it was more recent than the last time that Jean appeared alive given that she’s stayed dead for around 5 years already and yet Phoenix made it in. Thanks for the vote, regardless.
Uh, this isn’t the place to talk about any of that, especially when there are already appropriate threads to talk about Strider’s Ouroburos, any UMvC3 potential issues from the trailer or Viewtiful Joe wishlists. You know, places where the relevant people might actually see them.
