A great read that really got me thinking about SSF4:AE re-balance. Would you guys consider the game to have 4 or more top tier characters? Are there any characters that have clear advantages over 90% of the roster?
“Super SF2 Turbo – Even after fifteen years, ST remains widely supported in the tournament scene. It introduced super moves and throw softening to Street Fighter, along with countless new bells and whistles such as overheads and juggle combos. No advantages transfer from round to round because super meter levels do not carry over. The established top tier contains at least five characters: Dhalsim, O.Sagat, Vega, Balrog, and Ryu – with Bison, Chun Li, and Dee Jay also making strong showings.”
I think it would be nice if the top tier in the AE rebalance was as diverse as ST.
---- for ST ----- Dhalsim, O.Sagat, Vega, Balrog, and Ryu – with Bison, Chun Li, and Dee Jay
---- for AE ----- Fei Long, Yang, Yun, Akuma, Viper, Ken, Sagat and Makoto ---- for AE
OK, assuming the AE list is legit (I’m on the fence about Makoto and Yang) I still think ST had more Diversity of play styles in the top tier then AE does.
But seeing the lists side by side does make the game seem not as bad.
A lot of you dont seem to know how balancing a game works. I see posts saying that nobody needs nerfed (not even Yun) and other characters need buffs. Others seem to put up random buffs and nerfs that would help their character so they have a much easier time (mainly Guile players wanting ssf4 guile back. You try playing against decent Guile with any grappler and come back. K thx).
Are you really that dumb?
Not trolling, a serious question. Are you seriously too stupid to see how it would affect the game?
Your vague description of buffing certain characters so they can fight the twins/Fei would mean that some character would have to receive new specials. You want Hakan to have a srk? Or give everyone a 2 frame anti air jab. Seriously, I dont know how some people can be so blind to see that some character NEED NERFING! In Blazblue CS Taokaka had a loop that could take away 50% life right off the bat without any meter and put her in a position to start another attack and people still tried to justify it, saying that it was hard work (my ass even if you screw up you’re safe). You see, people will always try to justify broken characters and the ironic thing is that those people will say that people will always whine that someone is OP even if the “whine-group” consist of the majority of the communty. Please think before you suggest some random buffs to make your life easier, cuz you might screw up the balance.
Would it be bad if they made every single character Top-Tier but made the the top-tierness managable and to a point where everybody would agree like "hey even tho every single character is top tier it seems alittle bit more fair?
Imagine if they let him use the boss version of Seth. That thing has around 1150-1200 hp and even shorter recovery on some moves (plus better damage on SRK and SPD)
I dunno about this. Ken is great as is. Viper too. Can’t speak to Blanka/Makoto/Seth, but some of those other names need attention.
Sagat:
Sagat is not perfectly tuned quite yet. As it is a rush down game now, it’s easy to get in. Once you’re in on Sagat he has no real strong poke options to counter, and thus blocks for the rest of the match (unless he can get away again). An easy way to make it decent and have some type of close range exchange is just give him back his st lk cancel as in vanilla. Very simple. It allows him better block strings, at least some type of footsie game. He’s a defensive character in a offense based game. Give him close range defense at least.
Fei:
No need to do much here, was fine in Super, a tad better now (but not leaps and bounds better than Super). He is not a drain on the cast as Yun is. Fei has plenty of not good matchups, including Rog, Zangief, Akuma, Dhalsim, and few others. He is not the terror that Yun is to many characters, and at least is an answer to Yun (well, 5/5 but that is still good in AE lol).
Akuma:
Another character that has slipped by many revisions without shifting from his tier spot. His mix up options are so good I would say scale some other things back (not health obviously). Outside the twins, he doesn’t have too many bad matchups at all. Toned down a tad would be fine, he beasts on a great many of the other characters outside Yun and Yang.
Yun:
Nerf. He is a lot of fun to play, but I do agree he needs nerfing.
Yang: Fine as is. Don’t touch him. Yun should have been (should be) about this strength.
Sagat has plenty of tools to keep characters out. Stand Short, even without cancelling into anything, does very well in pushing characters out, once they get within a character’s length. S. MK, and s. HK still do wonders.
As for up close, considering he has the best fireball game, and a very good midrange game (between strong pokes, Tiger Knee and Kara Uppercut), he should have a little trouble up close. That being said, he doesn’t have all that much trouble anyway. He’s got a 3F low Jab that cancels, so that’s a strong tool. And let’s not forget Uppercut.
He’s close, but again the tweak would be simply to allow that vanilla cancel again. It isn’t hard to get in on Sagat in this version. It’s not a defensive fireball fest the other versions were. Rush down characters get in without too much difficulty. Even other zoners (Akuma) beast on him when they get close due to poking options. Good players don’t jump in (save nasty dive kicks), they can simply push forward on the ground and put him in the corner and get in his face pretty fast. Point being is that it isn’t hard to get in on Sagat in this version, if it was I would say no worries with the lack of close range options as he could keep them out. But again, you can get in without too much difficulty. It’s not asking asking much for that cancel to return, it also allowed him a better option to attack rather than just play fully defensive and turtle. That is exactly what happens now when characters get in on him, which is pretty quick if you are decent with your rush down character.
Also, I wouldn’t say standing mk does wonders, and if you aren’t a fool and don’t jump in all the time, advancing by ground you can go under roundhouse kick. It’s not the best measure to consistantly throw out at close range, especially against experienced players.
The biggest issue when Sagat was overpowered was the amount of damage he could inflict. They were correct to take that down a bit. Taking away the simple st lk cancel was silly to this day, and even less passable now that rush down is dominant. I am less concerned with damage buffs as I have heard some people suggesting, but simply return this to him and be done with it.
I m with HAV on this. Sagat is perfectly fine, and they will most likely give more tools to characters that really need it rather than buff those already in the current Top 10.
