Official SEGA Saturn PC & PS2 Control Pad Thread

Hey, my SLS usb pad kinda died on me. The down input is stuck. I can just find myself a regular sega saturn controller and swap the PCB? I mean that’s the gist that I’m getting from this thread but I’d like to confirm.

Ahh man, I had a pad similar to that bootleg one a while back. Did not work and the color scheme buttons were exactly the same. Knew something was up and ended up buying a new one :mad:

Same thing happened to me, the down input broke off completely. I liked the SLS, but it was unusable after like 5 months of use. Shoulder buttons were sticking at that point, too…I also acquired some nasty RSI in my thumbs from the buttons.

Eh, I consider mine having a long run. I bought it a year ago and while the shoulder buttons stuck after about 6 months for me, that didn’t matter since I play with my whole hand over the buttons like an arcade stick. I have nothing but love for the SLS since it really helped get me into fighters seriously. :tup:

I’m afraid this is what’s gonna happen to my SLS dpad as well after a few more game with it. During a game my dpad’s down input felt awfully loose. It also gives me the similar feel back when my Saitek dpads were about to break. Definitely not a good feeling when you’re playing and you’re worrying your dpad will break any minute. No problem with the shoulder buttons. Had this pad about 4 months.

It was a good run especially when I was using Viper and just started with Cammy.

Sorry for bumping but I was planning on getting a pair of SLS pads, but it seems they break very easy? I mean 6 months is nothing

are all pads like that or are there just a few unlucky people?

Can anyone confirm for me if this means the maybe bootleg SLS saturn pads have common ground PCBs (or just take a picture for me)? I’m on the hunt for an affordable, dual-mod-able PS3 pcb =).

As far as the previous posts in this thread are concerned this seller seems to be quite trustful. I also want to buy two of those controllers but I’m looking for the black version though. Does anyone know if THESE are legit?

Alright, took apart the “SLS” pad I got from focalprice. Looked at the PCB, looks legit based on the litanedup ebay page pictures.

I also took the liberty of taking apart my original saturn pad…the designs are almost identical in every way. The only discernible difference is the shoulder buttons - the saturn shoulder buttons make contact with a clicky button by purely plastic. The SLS pads do so by a rubber extension, as it appears the original saturn buttons didn’t quite reach far enough. As a result, the shoulder buttons aren’t as good as they should be. Aside from not being as clicky, one of the SLS shoulder buttons appears to be a little large somewhere, as it fits more snugly then it should.

Other than that, every part appears to be interchangeable. I decided to replace the saturn PCB with the SLS usb pcb in the original saturn casing with buttons and all (except the shoulder buttons, which I had to use the SLS ones for) and give it a shot.

Impressions: The saturn pad with the usb pcb feels a lot smoother. The SLS d-pad is jerky by comparison. The saturn d-pad is more responsive, and the buttons feel a bit better too. It seems like it might be because of the silicon pads used (i kept the original saturn ones in there).

Now I’m going to have to buy 2 more saturn controllers for my sega saturn…I made the SLS pad a sega saturn controller but I want the real thing…unless someone can suggest a place to get other silicon pads used for the buttons.

Results of this experiment:

-It is now $15 (focalprice) to turn a REAL saturn pad into a usb pad (sans shoulder buttons…but those aren’t terribly vital)
-I now lost a good pad for my sega saturn and need to buy 2 more…but on the other hand I have an extra controller suitable for saturn bomberman!

I guess it’s important to note the SLS pad (at least in this instance…maybe i didn’t get a great one?) isn’t bad. It’s pretty good compared to other controllers. However, if you were expecting the fluid d-pad from the original saturn pad, you’re probably not going to get it.

Now…time to stop screwing around…I have 2 midterms to study for

UPDATE: I took apart the controllers again and put everything back, but I swapped the pads used to make contact between buttons and the pcb. There isn’t much of a difference, but after having used the SLS usb controller in it’s normal form for a while, it seems like burning it in by playing more will make the d-pad feel a bit smoother, I hope.

The pads seem to be ok, at least, I don’t think you will get a better deal anywhere else…

My SLS Satapad doesn’t seem to work with Windows 7…

I keep having to install and uninstall to get it to work for while, at least until I unplug it again. Any solutions?

Sigh… in case anyone was wondering, the “retrolink” Saturn USB pads are not common ground. Can anyone please crack open their “SLS” controller and take a picture? (Or link me if there’s one floating around I missed?)

The fact that these are still being sold concerns me. I would also appreciate a PCB shot from someone who bought one of these from PlayAsia etc back in the day.

Wow… it didn’t take long for the bootlegs to surface. From the pics posted above, it follows the usual thing that most bootleggers tend to do, which is to not print the company logo “sega”.

Good thing i snatched the ones that hit ebay a few years go, which were probably old stock buried and forgotten in a warehouse.
