Hold up. It doesn’t even have enough onboard memory for some saved game files? Those are usually like KBs to a few MBs in size.
Another thing I don’t get. Are the Sony mem. cards absolutely necessary for game installs? I don’t get it. Aren’t the games themselves already little carts? Why are installs even necessary?
Was gonna buy one soon, but I’ll have to read up a bit more on it.
I wouldn’t have any qualms with the machine if there was some on board memory OR if the memory was somewhat inexpensive, it would pretty much would have been a day one buy. 3G version even. The games look anywhere from average to pretty cool, but nothing really jumps off the page for me as a must buy. I have a decent size catalog of PSP games that I bought from the store, so having something to play until that killer app comes out wouldn’t be an issue. I don’t really like the idea if I were not to purchase any kind of memory option I can’t update my device, and the fact that game installs exist when games are loading from a flash cart really pisses me off. Another lackluster launch by Sony.
That’s why in holding off on making another thread. There’s a lot about the handheld that Sony and the media haven’t told us, that people just have to find out for themselves.
Until I hear different, I’m convinced that the lack of internal storage and the memory card prices was a concession made by Sony, in exchange for retailers stocking the system. A lot of stores worldwide were very unhappy with PSP Go cutting retail out of software sales.
The saved files thing, is a Sony thing. Not all games need a memory card, all Sony ones do. I heard FIFA saves right to the games, like DS carts.
They were probably not happy with the PSPgo taking up shelf space. $250 for PSPgo, hardly any games in the PSN to even buy at launch. When it dropped to $200, I looked at it, but still didn’t bite. Bestbuy had it on sale for $150 for a week and I bought one. Definitely was worth that price to me back then.
You might be right, but I think it was more of a way to make $ on memory cards.
It is a business strategy, make the barrier to entry lower hoping to recoup on accessories, some mandatory.
They get to show that $249, when it is actually $270 to be able to play all the games.
My 16GB card came today, I think that will be big enough for at least a year, because 4GB wasn’t cutting it.
I still haven’t fucked with Unit 13 demo to see if it is a purchase for me, my 4GB was full already. Will try it out this week, did anybody fuck with Unit 13?
Why was PSP Go $250? Because retailers refused to sell a dd-only game machine at a competitive price. I can link articles about stores boycotting the system, but they’re easy to find with a web search.
I definitely believe marking up the storage card price was an excuse to get money, but I don’t think it was the only reason. Vita is only going to sell so many units, and Sony knows that… or they’re fools if they think Vita would be the 2nd coming of PS2. It doesn’t really make sense to price gouge an accessory that only works on one product with limited sales potential.
The PSPgo was at every retailer I frequent, Target, Fry’s, Bestbuy, & Kmart. They all had it, I can’t think of 1 major retailer that did not carry it, thus boycotting it.
The price point was stupid to begin with. Sell the system for more, than the system that actually does more.
Only way they could justify $250, was having some way to transfer your UMDs, even then. I might not have bit at $250.
They priced gouge the Pro Duo as well, they always add a Sony Tax to their products. Look at their TV division, $2400 for a 3DTV, then next month it was $1300. What happened in between?
I only bought the 16GB, because 32GB I feel I don’t need and didn’t want to pay an extra $40 when next year 32GB probably be $50.
I may be back on board with Modnation Vita after trying it just yesterday… well, at least for a cheaper price, perhaps. When I finally got to the racing part it was still about as fun and looked like the console version… good enough. The problem besides the lack of online racing though was the load times… you’d think that wouldn’t be an issue anymore, but the load times are about as bad as the console version was before the patch came out!
I have no idea why these games have load times at all, flash memory is super fast to read. Wipeout 2048 has crazy load times too, almost a minute to from when you pick your event until you can start. I only played after the patch, and I wonder how long it was before the patch.
I have a 3DS, and Resident Evil has no noticeable loading, and the graphics are pretty good. The environments so, far aren’t that big, maybe that is part of the reason. Vita must load up as much of the game in memory as possible.
Because info still has to be loaded instruction by instruction into the memory and eventualy thru aprocessor. t can be accessed quickly, but you stil have to deal with pushing it thru the pipeline, an area I doubt they were concerned with.
you NEED a memory card. Period. No way around that. And it isn’t for saves and little random shit that should be left on the game card, it’s for patches, saves, etc. The only conceivable reason for this is to make money on over priced proprietary memory.
You know If I’d payed retail for this thing I’d be a lot more upset over the memory card things as well. It’s like they purposely left features out of this iteration just so they could be added to the next one. In any case I got a great deal on mine and am enjoying it thus far.
I understand how memory works, and I know some games are obviously coded better than others. I did not buy Modnation Racers on PS3 because the loading during the Beta was awful, heard full game was same way. Vita game has awful load times as well. Games can load what you need first and then stream load the rest in the background. There isn’t a real need to watch a loading screen in 2012, Wipeout 2048 I’m looking at you. Seems like the racing games are the worst offenders.
Yes it is BS, that you have to have a memory card for most games, but I heard Ninja Gaiden doesn’t need it and saves to the game. At least the launch PSPs came with 32MB, so you could save stuff, new PSPs haven’t came with shit for awhile. If they put 256MB on board, everybody would go out and buy a memory card anyway, I imagine. Mine came with 4GB, and I knew I didn’t even want that small of one.
There are always ‘better’ ways, but then you run into the Win7 issue where things load in the background giving the ILLUSION thats its loaded enough to be functional, but ultimatly you are still waiting before you can double click IE. Waiting for things to load is IMO better upfront in that performance itself won’t get hit from the cycles lost retrieving new data. I do get annoyed at the Marvel load times, but meh…I can deal.
I just read that modnation is’meh’ in general so I didn’t bother looking…plus anything that reminds me of a Nintendo game is an instant “No Thank You”…CPU assistance can burn in hell…best player should win.
Got my Vita yesterday, love it. Thumb sticks take a little getting used to but once I stopped being so heavy handed they were nice to use (at least over that hovering circle on the PSP). Memory prices are a joke and I couldn’t find anyone stocking higher cards than 16GB. I grabbed one, maybe if I ever see a larger size on offer sometime in the future I’ll get another. This should hopefully do for now. I downloaded Everybodys Golf and it wasn’t all that big (around 1200MB if I recall?) so hopefully I can fit a few more on.
I wish they would be a bit more competitive with the online prices. Everything seems to cost more than in store at the moment (at least in Europe).
I kind of miss the XMB, but I love how fast and responsive the UI is.
Overall I’m quite impressed. I purchased Rayman with it and the gameplay seems to suit the Vita perfectly. My brother also has Uncharted which I’ve put a little time into.
Quick question, is it possible for me to share downloadable content and games with my brothers Vita (either by downloading on his handheld or using the content manager?). I think for the Vita I actually prefer buying games through the PS Store as I can have quick access without swapping out cards, but he’s young so I always hesitate and buy stuff in store so he can play it without spending what little money he has.
Man, my Vita wouldn’t load Marvel, or any of my demos, and when I tried to turn it off, there was just the black screenw/rotating bubbles and the ps logo button kept flashing blue and would not stop. All the way home I was a little ticked cuz I thought I would have to open the Vita up and do a battery pull (which would void warranty), only to check a website and find my solution: hold the power button for 30 seconds. WHEW! It worked. Now…when do they update the Vita store so I can git mah Jill? And when did Ammy get a new color? “GH”? What’s that? Golden Hound?
You can log in to other accounts, but it’s not easy like PS3,you have to restore the Vita to factory settings and then log in with what ever account you wanted to switch to.
