Official PSVita/PSP chat thread

You can essentially use it for anything someone writes a program for. For me though, being able to have my games on micro SD instead of carrying a bundle of UMDs is the biggest benefit.

Back in 2004-7 PSP was barebones. No browser, no PS1 emu, no comic readers, etc. Even the video player was locked at 320x240. PSP was also underclocked below the CPU’s full speed of 333MHz (for battery conservation), which meant games like Wipeout didn’t run as well as it could have. Hacking unlocked all the crap Sony took years to include officially. Once you used PSP for all it was worth, it was almost like a handheld computer… kind of like the cellphones everyone has today. Other than emulators and other piracy, and homebrew’d games and ripping UMDs/PS1 CDs, I think hacking’s outlived its purpose.

I picked up PSVita and a memory card for downloadin’. If you got any questions post them here, I’ll answer them later.

I fucking hate you right now.

If you have a PS3, what kind of connectivity can be used between the PS3 and Vita?

I have a PS3 but it’s half a world away.

The kicker is, only JP PSN is available for Vita at the moment-- you can’t do anything that isn’t JP PSN related. I wanted to play some PSP games that I bought from the US store but of course the store is offline, and just copying the game through Media Go doesn’t work. Shit!

ā€˜Let us cling together’???

I swear that’s a song by Queen… I could be wrong, but yeah…

Also Metal Gear Acid 2… get dat… now…

This game is too gdlk… probably one of my favorites… feels like a fully fleshed out game…

EDIT: Yeah… that’s definitely a song by queen…

DOUBLE EDIT: PSP minis seem to be mostly shovelware except for a couple of old-ass DOS RTS games that had the 50 page manuals, and Tetris…

I got a hold of 156 of these games, 100 of them were super booty, just finished trying out a couple more and they are not good enough to be worth keeping…

I’ll keep going through them and see can I compile a list of one’s worth playing… I’m probably gonna slim that shit down to Top fucking 10 lol…

My major bone of contention with the psp was that dust/lint could easily infiltrate the system via the for-some-damn-reason UNCOVERED speaker holes (really, Sony? You couldn’t just put a really fine wire micro-mesh on there, like what you see on earbuds when you remove the rubber bud?) and end up on the screen behind the faceplate. Does it look like this might have the same problem later? Oh, and is there a heat increase when it’s running?

Vita has a solid build quality, much better than PSP or DS. I haven’t opened it or anything, so I’m not sure if the screen has better dust protection than PSP, but there’s still a lot of open ports for dust to creep into. The doors for the game card/expansion port aren’t any different than PSP’s memory stick door.

The menu is pissing me off. It’s too slow and ā€˜animated.’ And it plays this annoying Cliff Martinez-wannabe background music. As far as I know you can’t change the music, you can just mute every sound the system makes. I hope the rumored XMB theme is true. And damn these buttons are tiny. Otherwise not bad.

Will probably have crazy custom themes like the PSP ended up having.

Alright Top 3 PSP Minis List- because out of 156/160 or so I could only find 3 that weren’t boring games, flash games, shovelware, or just complete ass… the DOS 98 PC ports were done well, but I don’t remember enjoying them very much… if you like micromanagement you could grab Egypt- Engineering an Empire… I’m sure alot of folks have played it once before I would hope… but no in depth tutorial comes with it… just pointers…

A Spaceshooter for 2 Bucks

While the title might not sound very appealing and it sounds like some easy mode ass American shooter, it is anything but that…

The storyline/protagonist seems inspired by Megas XLR… playing with a badass Fat Guy that likes to kill aliens for no reason is always a fun time…

But the game, especially the beginning is pretty fucking relentless…

BreakQuest

Fuck another brick-breaking game right? Well, Yes… yet not really? It doesn’t feel half assed and has neat stages, cool power-ups, ability to shoot up a double ball whenever you feel like it(however this double ball can function as an extra life) for each ship you get two balls, and while shooting two of them off could make the level go by faster, you effectively cut the amount of possible balls in half… you can change the trajectory of the ball downward while it’s in the air, it’s pretty fucking cool… some of the powerups allow you to shoot lasers and missles… however you’ll need it all to win… hard to put down, but also hard to beat…

Tetris

You’re probably thinking, ā€œWhat is this nigga putting Tetris by EA Sports down for?ā€ Well while it’s still Tetris, there are tons of variations offered and tons of incentives thrown in the game to improve you… The goal of this game is simple: mold a player into a Tetris Grandmaster… they have unlockable videos from Tetris Grandmasters to give you a couple of strats to steal, to 100% the game, you must complete challenges, and these challenges are staples in any good Tetris players game… very well-done by EA sports bravo…

What about Pac-Man CE? I haven’t tried that yet.

I have also gotten my Vita. http://photozou.jp/photo/show/663510/113580075

Obviously if you’ve played Pac-Man DX then this will obviously pale in comparison…

CE wasn’t that great to me, wasn’t experimental enough, it’s not bad, it’s decent, but not really worth mention imo…

It’s not really worth a monetary investment imo… I’d recommend the Namco PSP collection just for Pacman, Mrs. Pacman, Galaga, and Digdug… ā€œHey it’s another Namco collection wtf asshole?ā€ā€¦ You have the opportunity to finish these games, due to an autosave feature you can cut on, so you can continue from whatever level you lost on… also whatever levels you’ve beaten, you get the option to level select, so play/start on whatever level you’d like… Rest of the game is asscheeks, but I think just because of this it may be worth it…

But look dude, that BreakQuest has a fucking Space Invaders level bro… you can change ships(differently angled paddles), launch double balls on a whim, stupid fun powerups, fun levels, seriously if you’re not playing this, I don’t know wtf you are doing with your life… arcade mode that will set different parameters to make your life difficult on unlocked stages… seriously man, seriously… some powerups allow you to shoot the block with lasers…

I didn’t even know a Brick Breaking game could be done this well… everyone edition I’ve ever played has been ass… I was crazy skeptical about it until I played it…

The first level is an optical illusion(these lines are all parallel)…

But quick warning, it’s hard… when they give you massive powerups like that, they have to make your life a living hell… stages are fucking cool, but each one has a quirk that makes it hard… lots of levels, all of em sweet…

I really never liked Tetris until I played that EA one, shit turned me into a Tetris fanatic… controls are so smooth, pad sensitivity is just fucking right(it is ALWAYS your fault when you fuck up), everything works as it should, different modes, unlockables that encourage you to complete certain challenges, acheivements…

Nigga I went from not knowing the fucking rules to Tetris, to dropping 45 tetrominos per minute nigga(yeah they put stuff like that on the side to let you know you’re progressing in skill), the acheivements aren’t just a pat on the back for doing ridiculous shit, they are for things you should have in your repertoire, they let you know that you are getting better…

However any version of Tetris(well maybe except one of those TGM arcade machines) will pale in comparison…

A Spaceshooter for Two Bucks boss so hard that shit cray, it’s difficult, it’s fun, and it’s funny as fuck…

Only complaint I have is that the hitbox on the ship is kinda large for all the bullets you have flying at you… I’m not sure is that a legitimate complaint or not but whatever…

Also, when you fly iirc and try to move in the opposite direction, the shit has to stop momentum(it’s probably .1ms lag time or so, but small things will make all the difference) in direction you were going in, to go in another direction… probably an intended mechanic…

I might want to play this on easy…

Obviously though, BreakQuest is one of my favorites… reviewers do not give these indie developers fair shots because they don’t have deep pockets… niggas giving this game 5.5’s and shit…

Oh yeah I forgot about DX. So Thexder wasn’t shit either?

Thanks for the writeup. Truth of the matter is, I’m broke (in budget terms anyway) and I’m looking for some bargain bin gaming until payday. I saw ā€˜Tetris’ and ā€˜EA’ together and wrote it off, but I’ll check it out if it’s TGM-ish.

no link but the Playstation FB page just announced the AT&T plans for the Vita. $15 for 250MB and $25 for 2GB no contracts. I kind of wish I reserved a 3G instead of the Wifi. lol

Preordered a Vita. Gonna preorder a 32gb card next check.

Did anyone figure out if PS1 games will work on the NA Vita at launch, or will that have to be worked on like JPN’s Vita?

for those that need some sort of link

I’m sure there is still time to swap pre-orders.

I’ve been having this problem with all Aksys psp fighters: Supers come out fine, but quarter-circle motions to the left do not. It’s neither me nor the d-pad. I think this is a result of poor programming or something. I went into training and turned on the display input option…it shows I’m doing moves correctly in BB CS2…but all I get is a standard attack 3 times out of 5. I’m not a noob to fighters (20+ years) and have no problem with even the hardest inputs (well…aggressors of dark kombat sucks anyway so I’m not counting that). Has anyone noticed this, or are there no psp owners here who play aksys fighters? I exit the game and play some emulated kof98/2k2 and everything comes out perfect. wtf, aksys?

Wasn’t there someone here who said ā€œ3G is too slow for gaming, so it’s probably for internet, not online matchesā€? Until/unless that changes/changed, there’s no need for a 3g model.
