Official Pokemon Thread ver 3.0: PokeMMO: The Future Of Pokemon? (B/W 2 OUT NOW!)

I’ll prolly be on later this week…

If not taken, then my name is going to be my SRK name…

cool, my name on here is JoJoKujo.

also, just noting but, you can only add people if they’re online.

Been playing BW2 since yesterday afternoon. Azumarill is an in-game rapist. Hopefully I can get to the tutors soon so I can finally tutor moves and have my OU team completely built.

Aight, imma start getting stuff together then…

If you’re still on, I’ll add you…

Also, thank god for them throwing it back to FireRed… because the game kept getting more broken every generation, now I can try some new stuff…

I’m on now, EphiSRK

just got the town map, heading to the forest.

Dammit, the server is currently full

I’ll be there one day SRKniggas…

Why the fuck is that website not asking for donations for more servers…

If you got time you can wait about 10-15 mins to get on. I’ve been on ever since this morning (definitely agree they need a much bigger server tho)

I got my politoed, no thanks to you buttholes.

My drizzle team gonna be so BALLER.

Made a thread in OG to raise awareness.

I haven’t gotten to play it yet, but seriously, what’s making PokeMMO that new crack?

gotta catch em all!
STDemon!

right now i’ve got them all except herpesuna and gonorrheachu

stuff we already know, but a fun read.

hard to say atm, it’s just addicting like any other MMO. They still need to patch this though because I’ve been getting stuck in areas clustered with people (or bugs).

I haven’t played Pokemon since the Red/Blue/Yellow days, and I stumbled upon PokeMMO through talking with a friend.

My question though is, undoubtedly as an MMO, it becomes possible to challenge players from all over the world… but how do you actually determine who is the best?

I mean, is there a point where player skill trumps time spent leveling your Pokemon? Assuming two players have access to all Pokemon at the same level, how does a player demonstrate his superior skill level at the game? I mean, in a game like Street Fighter it’s obvious, there are mindgames, setups, frame traps, crossups, unblockables, matchup strategy, execution, etc., but as a player who hasn’t played since he was a kid, I am at a loss for where the skill is in the game.

I don’t doubt that it’s there, I’m not trying to start a flame war. I’m genuinely interested in the game and wouldn’t mind picking it up, but as I’ve grown up (sort of) and have moved on to other games that I consider to be more skill-based, I wonder how player skill can be reflected in a game like Pokemon, rather than it boiling down to whoever has spent the most time collecting the strongest Pokemon and leveling them up the most.

Well Pokemon is at its core, a bit luck based. Have to hope certain below 100% moves hit, Freeze Hax, Confuse Hax, Flinch Hax. But it’s also a knowledge based game. Know what your opponent has and know when to switch and how to work around certain Pokemon.

But yeah, at it’s core, it’s for people who just want to grind their Poke’s out and are hardcore about breeding and IV’s and EV’s and all that “fun” stuff. And yeah, certain Pokemon will rise above the rest quite easily depending on moves. I don’t remember who dominated Gen 3 though.

But on an even playing field, it comes down to knowledge, patience and sometimes the ability to not give two fucks.

It’s mostly about team comp, strategy, and mind games, you can easily have stuff like, you one shot the opponents pokemon that is out, so they switch to something that will mostly ignore the move that would have killed the other guy, but you saw that coming so instead you used a power up move and now you can kill the thing that was supposed to block your move. I have 6-0’d competent teams using only venonat and raichu(one is pretty much completely worthless and the other is pretty mediocre), it all comes down to having a solid strategy for your team to execute, and predicting the enemies moves and countering them with your own.

Going to try this PokeMMO. Handle is Raz0r.

Edit: Name of my character is RazorSRK for whatever reason I can’t just be myself.

My take on it is that PokeMMO isn’t the proper place to determine that. If you’re interested in the game on a skill/competitive perspective, try Pokemon Online/Pokemon Showdown. I’ve always felt that the typical in-game playthrough (which is what most people are familiar with) and the competitive side of pokemon are separated, and that PokeMMO appeals to the former while Pokemon Online/Showdown appeals to the latter.
