I’d say Babcock is the best choice for Toronto. He has a pre-existing relationship with Shanahan, and Shanahan will probably give him time/resources to develop a system. Him going to Buffalo would’ve been a failure. He was fine in Detroit but Ken Holland’s mancrush on Jimmy Howard was definitely causing problems in the locker room.
Sucks to see him go, but if he needed a change, he needed it. I’d rather him be where he wants than staying in Detroit because of a workable system and coaching with apathy.
Hopefully Holland does the smart thing for the first time this decade and gives the head coaching job to Blashill.
Babcock’s family is set for life, and he has an active say in the team, there was no way he could have said no
He could’ve, if he REALLY wanted to stay in the Red Wings organization, because he was making a very tidy windfall for his family to begin with there, and had a say in the team as well.
Fact is he decided that he just wasn’t interested in staying with Detroit, and ultimately that’s better for all parties involved. Toronto gets a great coach, Babcock is happy, and Detroit isn’t running with a coach that is ultimately there for the sole purpose of cashing a paycheck.
If they call up Blashill from Grand Rapids, you can bet he’ll want that Cup more than that paycheck, and will be ready to make his stamp on the team to keep himself tied down there. He’s already proven championship caliber in the AHL, I doubt he’s going to run a team as lackadaisical as Dave Lewis did in 2002-2004 just because he got promoted via circumstance. As bad a decision maker as Holland has been in recent history, I doubt he’s going to make the same mistake that he did when Bowman retired and just promote within ranks just because of an established system. Dave Lewis was a joke of a head coach in Detroit, and dumping him for Babcock was a great move.

I find Hawks Rangers to be an ok match just because Rangers have the better (and thirstier from the previous season’s loss) goaltending .

You know what the Sharks’ fans hated? Sitting young players for players who can’t play, e.g. John Scott and Scott Hannan.
