Fun fact - there were three online players in top 8. It seems to me in an era where most American tournies are being played on shit setups it pays to have experience in laggy conditions and to be able to adjust.
You want Chun Chun grand finals? lol
Great showing from the community. Missing more people but decent enough.
Neiman, eliminate those EX fireballs! Good run along with Hao and Cruise.
I wanted Cruise to face JWong. He had the greatest chance of beating Justin. But he missed a guaranteed win in game 2.
sorta sad seeing Daigo playing that bad but it was to be expected since he hasn’t been playing 3s seriously for like 9 years. Still cool to see the parry again ^^
Kind of lame of them to orchestrate a second full parry, only to create doubts about the legitimacy of the first one if nothing else.
Nothing in the FGC should be a “work”. We should strive for competitive integrity, not WWE viewership and ratings.
Kind of lame how lots of the great Cali players decided to not show up. Where the hell were the SoCal CvS2 and 3s players? Mother fuckers play GGPO all day and then complain about unseeable lag on a 1ms setup. If you think 1ms is going to affect your play in a best of 3, you’re delusional. Just sad.
Props to Watson to actually have the balls to have an event like this and showcase how these are the games that deserve the spotlight. Wish they would have shitcanned USF4, but they have to compromise somewhere, which is sad. I wouldn’t have.
I hope they do this every month, but that probably won’t happen since there’s loads of more money in scrub games like UMvC3 and USF4, so I’ll just hope this happens bi-yearly. Once a year is way too infrequent.
All in all, I had fun watching. I hope it isn’t “back to business as usual” for the majority of the FGC after seeing what crazy high level play in these games looks like, and how there was not a hint of bullshit in the gameplay.
This needs to happen more often. This was the most fun I’ve had at a tourney in a loooooong while. The other vets seemed to agree.
I played Daigo. CLEARLY he was off. I beat him in one game and he was definitely affected by lack of play as well as jet lag. The first thing he practiced was the parry as soon as he got to the set up.
Honestly, the only person who stood a chance of beating Justin was Amir. All other players are definitely skilled but there’s a definite lack of experience against players of Justin’s caliber that only Amir and Hung have. It’s no disrespect to anyone else who made top 8 but it was evident in everyone’s play; those who weren’t seasoned tourney vets ended up playing way more tentative and fearful; this played right into Justin’s game and made the wins easier for him to achieve. Regardless Neiman and Hao are stronger than before and Cruise isn’t the dipshit that a lot of people think he is.
Again, we can’t be beggars. I know; it’s not perfect. The screens were ASUS monitors. It was on 360. Okay. We’re not prima donnas. I know; we’re often regarded as rebels and not “part of the FGC”. But if Watson and crew are willing to take a chance on us, we need to show the same level of enthusiasm and respect.
it was cool seeing people ive played in ggpo and some old heads do well in this tournament; is there footage of the first day of 3s at all or did they only show top 8 on stream?
@duckcanoe
there is no lcd monitor out there that has 1 ms of lag or even close. If you claim to be an arcade player and can’t tell the difference playing on LCD monitors, I think you must not be paying attention.
@Duralath
I don’t see “we can’t be beggars.” No one in so cal had CRTS they can offer to bring? I don’t see it as ungrateful to have an ongoing discussion about setups and do what’s best for the community.
Isotopez and I didn’t come because of questions about the setup. I know from talking to people the last few days there were others who didnt go for the same reasons. For you guys who live close, maybe its not a big deal. For us outsiders who it would cost 400 to fly in, yeah the setup is gonna matter. It’s not prima donna to say “I’m not dropping 400 and hotel cost to play on Evo monitors.”
If they do this again next year and it’s arcade or at least CRT I’d love to come and play. If they need help with cps3 setups I’m willing to pony up.
@IglooBob I understand that you wouldn’t want to play if the setups were not as promised. Keep in mind, though, that this contingency plan was a last resort. The original plan wasn’t to play on 360; it was a fall back that left no other choice on such short notice.
Ideally, though, it goes beyond refusing to play because the mediums offered to play are not up to par. Yes, there were people saying that for the next one, they would bring CRTs. There, though, lies the issue: community support. If there’s absolutely no support whatsoever because of one mishap that couldn’t possibly be solved with the amount of time given (keep in mind; it’s not just CRTs but also proper cables and space, plus transporting all objects), there’s no incentive to do things like this again.
At the same time, if given the opportunity to at least play, then play.
Fuck, this is hard to do from my phone. I’ll have more later when I’m not juggling work and school at the same time.
Not to disrespect or take anything away from everyone who put this together and those players who made top 8, but I know most of us from up North were pretty disappointed with the whole deal.
My two cents: Why was it that almost every other game got to run on CRTs except 3rd Strike? I mean, there were people playing MVC1 on a CRT setup but we all get stuck with LCDs? The thing that bothered me the most though was having to play without sound. For an event that centered around a moment related to 3rd Strike, to me it felt like 3rd Strike wasn’t much of a priority.
If the game wasn’t going to be held on arcade, that’s fine as it is hardly practical, but I wish someone would have told us ahead of time what the actual format would be. OE I could live with because everyone tells me it is pretty good offline and with CRTs, but I know if it was announced that it was going to be LCDs, I would have just stayed home since I already hate everything about LA with a passion. I really feel bad for the Texas guys who came out for this.
I know I’m not considered a “top player” or an esports celebrity, but I have a feeling a lot of people would have done a lot better if everything was run on CRTs. This was one of my first times playing on something outside of arcade/ps2 and on LCD, so I know I sucked badly. Oh well.
Yeah I’m not complaining about super or Watson. If you plan on arcade and then last minute shit goes bad what can you do?
Did people from super let people know when it turned out it was gonna be console and lcd? If they did then cool. If not I think it would be a good idea.
I just mean in general. In general I’d like our community to talk about it more. It seems like most TOs wanna do what’s best, but there’s logistical and sometimes knowledge issues in the way. So it’s up to us to solve them. If it’s a question of getting crts or arcade setups local players can help. If it’s TOs who don’t know any better, we can let them know what’s up and that CRT is the standard for 3s.
I’m just looking at it as an ongoing problem that I think we could solve. Obviously the situation at 37 reloaded couldn’t be helped.
Indeed. And yes, it wasn’t a problem that could truly be rectified at the moment. Everything was set to go and then Murphy’s Law played into effect.
I do agree with you, though. As a community we need to step up and be a bit more outward with our game, as much as that seems like a lost cause. 10k viewers during Grand Finals is nothing to sneeze at, and I’m sure that some of those guys will actually attempt to learn 3s. It’s our job, then, to provide what we can, arcade and console.
THC: the other games were set to be played on CRTs so those had their setups allocated and used in that fashion. In the case of 3rd Strike, it originally was arcade but there was an issue with malfunctioning boards. Can’t run a tourney on those. Problem is, you can’t take away CRTs from the other games since that slows you down regardless. The only option, then, is the current port. It sucks, but sometimes you have to deal.
Offered to bring a board, got no response. Board at Super Arcade seemed to work fine Friday. There was also a supergun with 3s and usb inputs there as well. Just found it strange that wasn’t offered as on option. It’s cool.
Allegedly it was because of a cable that the 3s supergun didn’t get used. Which doesn’t really make sense to me, but oh well.
I’m going to humbly state I was wrong about just playing with the monitors. If CRT is possible then we do need to make every effort we can. This weekend was a freak occurrence and it didn’t help.
I do wish to congratulate the top 8 for there strong play and everyone that entered for showing love for third strike and for making the best of a bad situation.
Thank you THC for making a good post summarizing why the setup was poor. To summarize we ended up playing on Laggy LCD’s, with no sound, and on any stick we could borrow as they did not announce the setup before the tournament to my knowledge. I am sorry but how is that anything but a joke?
In the end I am not upset with how I did in the tourney or what it cost me to go. Although I am somewhat upset that I wasted my weekend to go and did get any real 3s in. Which is a shame as we had a pretty good group of 3s players from different parts of the US all in one place and that does not happen very often.
Fyi, the sound on the super arcade cab was out the thursday prior to the tournament. I’m sure that had something to do with why they weren’t able to bring in that cab. I see now that I missed out that friday. Supergun 3s is always a pleasure. It’s a wonderful feeling that sueprgun.
