Shortly after One was a similar game on Playstation called “Apocalypse”, which featured Bruce Willis… I liked both games, but they were tough to find at that time for some reason; I only rented them.
*Tecmo’s Deception-- most probably forgot about it… I remember the concept was that you could set deadly traps for people inside a large mansion or castle…it would be things like a large spike pit, or a weight coming down to crush them. Heh, that was great… it fulfilled some of my super-villain mastermind fantasies.
From this generation there’s Beat Hazard on the Xbox Indie Games section… people really need to check this out. It’s a twin-stick shooter like Geometry Wars, but it utilizes anything you have on the system as your custom soundtrack… the music/audio actually influences what’s going on in the game, and each track is a stage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob8b3hSswu4
Also in the twin-stick shooter category that I always enjoy-- there was Mutant Storm Reloaded and Mutant Storm: Empire from Live Arcade… the first one (Reloaded) was unfortunately in the shadow of the much more popular Geometry Wars… so, fast-forward to today and no one remembers the Mutant Storm games but me.
Here’s another favorite of mine from Eidos and CORE. Ninja Shadow of Darkness, mix of beat em up/action adventure. The hard part was the platforming because of your movement and how the camera was position even the small jump gaps were annoying
Race Jam (Ridge Racer-type game that let you drift by pulling a handbrake) and Solar Assault (Gradius with a 3d Starfox camera). Both decent Konami arcade games that nobody talks about or seems to remember.
Cool an underrated/overlooked/obscure games list thread. We haven’t had one of these in a couple years and it’s always a great excuse to introduce fellow SRK’ers to something they might love but haven’t heard of:tup:
You must mean 3 and 4, no way in hell RT is half the game 1, 2, Head On, Black, and 2012 were.
Looks interesting and multiple endings are always great, but for an adventure fanatic like me it definitely doesn’t scream “must play” especially since the genre is notorious for having countless “underrated must play” games. Gemini Rue is one of the finest adventure games ever made. It perfectly scratches the itch for anyone who likes sci fi/noir mystery (think Blade Runner) and the puzzles are well thought out too.
It’s on steam and GOG.com and tomorrow also on ios for $4.
Yes 2 people who actually played it! This game was like a visual punch in the face back in the day, I remember watching my friend play it and just marveling at all the explosions and over the top shit. I still stand behind my claim that very few games if any deserve an HD remake more than One.
Also Million I know you’re the only other person in the world who loves Phantom Dust, what a badass weird game:
As long as we’re on the topic of obscure, Unreal 2: The Liandri Conflict is probably the best multiplayer shooter I’ve ever played. Sadly it had like 10 people max on XBL lobbies. To this day no game is like it except maybe Shadowrun and Transformers reboot but even those don’t have nearly the depth of ridiculous shit found in U2:TLC. There’s combos, parrying, dozens of crazy powers, FPS, TPS, fatalities, whacky weapons, man shooters need to be ambitious again:
Condemned 1 and 2 while somewhat flawed in retrospect were some of the most fun and unique games I’ve played this generation. Dripping with atmosphere both games are actually scary, the combat is like a lot like King’s Field AKA first person Demon’s/Dark Souls, and the story is weird and fucked up, also it had some adventure style detective mechanics. Too bad we’ll never see C3, the series needs closure.
One of the best games I’ve ever played that I’ve raved about endlessly in the 3DS forum is Shinobi 3DS. So many people make a big deal about classics likes NES Ninja Gaiden or TMNT: Turtles in Time yet when a game in that vein comes along and takes it to the next level it gets completely ignored and people go on about inferior but more well known titles. It sold like shit, probably due to coming out at the same time as Super Mario 3D Land. This game is fucking hard as balls too:
Intelligent Qube. One of the only puzzle games to hold my attention ever. So addicting. I wish I had my copy here in China.
Cool Spot. One of the only foodservice tie-in games that was actually any good. I actually enjoyed it, not a bad side scroller.
Crash Team Racing. Too many people wrote this off as Mario Kart on PS1, but that was mine and my cousin’s shit back in the day. I’d buy a system for a sequel.
Can you believe I still haven’t played Rival Schools? Never going to get over this. Sob story too. My mom and I hit hard times, and had to sell our computer back in 99. I was upset, but she said she’d make it up to ne by buying me a game. Went to Walmart, picked out Rival Schools, they sent it to the front for checkout, and the cashier never rang it in. Next day, went back, and the last copy was gone, and I opted for Final Fantasy VII, which then consumed my next three months.
A year laer, I rented Rival Schools, only to find the disc was damaged.
That’s going on ny bucket list: Play Rival Schools.
Star Soldier got TERRIBLE reviews back in the day. I also actually enjoyed SS a lot as a kid. The ships at full power were pretty awesome. ACME All-stars is a fucking hidden gem.
My contributions
Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future combo pack <- This is an immaculate conception (hence the avatar image)
Deadlight <- Recent indie title that I’m enjoying so far. Fun platforming and puzzles with awesome level design.
Treasure Math Storm <- Shit was godlike back in the day
Trials - Was popular for a while but I feel like this game faded to obscurity before it should’ve. It can be very competitive and is a lot of fun
Last one, Mario Party 8. I feel like this one’s shoved down because of the significant rehash MP has become but (maybe it’s because I hadn’t played a Mario Party since 3) I feel like the boards of MP8 really changed the game for the better. I found the boards in MP8 to be pretty creative (though they’re sometimes rip-offs of traditional board games). Boo’s Castle in MP8 is probably my favorite Mario Party board to date. Is MP8 an obscure title? Probably not, but I feel like it’s under appreciated… Or maybe it’s just obscure to me.
Obligatory Beyond Good and Evil (WHERE’S BG&E2) banter… Also 3rd Strike
there have been 3 sequels but I only played the first and a little of the 3rd one and i dont remember it being like the first one. I had so much fun with that game.
Dungeones & Dragons: Order of the Griffon (TG-16) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGUHysf3gDg
My favorite console D&D game…first person exploration and strategy rpg battles
Shadow Tower Abyss (PS2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMmhgJG6Apw
Best PS2 game oot, the final game in the King’s Field/ST Universe and pre-cursor to Demons/Dark Souls
