Obscure (But Awesome) Video Games

why are you such a dick head?

it’s the red hair. I didn’t think you were missing my point in earnest. That doesn’t make you an idiot.

Happy new year!

Idk if this is obscure or what but i havent really heard of anyone else playing it: Space invaders on the N64. I played this game to death when i was in about 5th grade, still have fun when i occasionally pop it in nowadays as well. Good, clean, fun.

Space Invaders itself is most certainly not obscure. That IP got Miyamoto and Kojima into games, has had tons of sequels and remakes, and just. Yeah.

Edit: Looking at the above discussion, were you serious or was that a joke? Honestly not sure.

He meant that the N64 port may be obscure. I was aware of its existence, but it never comes up in discussion.

Yeah, i meant the N64 port, space invaders itself is pretty iconic lol. It was a bizarre game, i’m basing its obscurity off of the fact that noone else had it in my neighborhood when I did and I’ve never really seen it mentioned anywhere (the most important criteria).

I own this game, should play it again sometime:

It’s very much an Advance Wars clone.

Love this game, want to play its sequel, Last Window:

On topic. El Viento on Genesis. If you’ve never played it you really should.
I had never heard anyone talk about this game then I found it in a pawn shop one day and liked the cover art.
Best $3 I ever spent.

Drill Dozer Proof that Game freak can make good non-Pokemon Games
its one downfall it game late in the Game Boy Advance’s product cycle and the DS was all the RAGE

Also the last Legit 8-bit game ever sold
Shante for the Game Boy Color, first game made by Wayforward

its now $200 on eBay, so if you see a copy cheap snag it, even if you don’t like the game play.

Yea Drill Dozer is so dope. Really love that game. Damn Drill Dozer got a stick shift yo.

Shantae so damn good to. Totally emulate that shit outta that game :coffee:

The YouTube/Penny Arcade webshow Extra Credits has an entire series of videos on various obscure games they think people should try. If you get a chance you should watch the whole playlist, there’s some really cool stuff in there.

The YouTube channel SuperBunnyHop also recently did a video on their Top 10 Free Games of 2013.

I keep hearing about Hotline Miami so I’m not really sure if it’s obscure or anything but I really should play this game.

maybe best flight sim of the 90s

Lessee… Crystalis is already mentioned. Godlike predecessor to games like Secret of Mana. Shame SNK didn’t continue down the RPG path, though. I’d like to have seen more games like that from them.

Intelligent Qube was mentioned too, damn. That game had a soundtrack that was way too good for the rest of the game. Not to say the game was bad, because from a design point, it was amazing, but even for the time it was released, the graphics were really bad. But dat soundtrack…

RibbitKing

This game is amazing as a game to play with friends, drunk or sober. What happens to those frogs in Ribbitopia stays in Ribbitopia…

Would the Ys series be considered obscure enough? I would have said so even 5 years ago, but I don’t know so much anymore. If so, I’d put any of the remakes up here (Ys I & II Chronicles, Origin, Ark of Nephistim, Oath in Felghana, Seven, Memories of Celceta) as damn solid games. Most people I know that know of Ys managed to play Ys 3 or 4 on the SNES, and from what I remember, those games… weren’t good.

XX Mission (arcade)
Wurm - Journey to the Center of The Earth (NES)
Crystal Caves (PC)
The Yakyuuken Special (Saturn)

Death Cargo ain’t on the list…

Jumping Flash! 2

Destruction Derby 2 (probably one of the hardest racing games ever)

Most of the games that are posted on this thread I got from game hunting through thrift store.

I recently pick up this gem a few weeks ago at a local Value Village.

The Misadventures of Flink for Sega CD. Probably one of my favorite platformers

https://youtu.be/AbEAyl7QX0U

I actually had Flink for my Sega CD, but I didn’t much care for it. I remember the box art and color scheme being quite nice, though.
