Idk if this is obscure or what but i havent really heard of anyone else playing it: Space invaders on the N64. I played this game to death when i was in about 5th grade, still have fun when i occasionally pop it in nowadays as well. Good, clean, fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJdvUcAL27E
Yeah, i meant the N64 port, space invaders itself is pretty iconic lol. It was a bizarre game, i’m basing its obscurity off of the fact that noone else had it in my neighborhood when I did and I’ve never really seen it mentioned anywhere (the most important criteria).
On topic. El Viento on Genesis. If you’ve never played it you really should.
I had never heard anyone talk about this game then I found it in a pawn shop one day and liked the cover art.
Best $3 I ever spent.
Drill Dozer Proof that Game freak can make good non-Pokemon Games
its one downfall it game late in the Game Boy Advance’s product cycle and the DS was all the RAGE
Also the last Legit 8-bit game ever sold
Shante for the Game Boy Color, first game made by Wayforward
its one mistake being the very last game ever made for the Game Boy Color released in 2001
The YouTube/Penny Arcade webshow Extra Credits has an entire series of videos on various obscure games they think people should try. If you get a chance you should watch the whole playlist, there’s some really cool stuff in there.
Lessee… Crystalis is already mentioned. Godlike predecessor to games like Secret of Mana. Shame SNK didn’t continue down the RPG path, though. I’d like to have seen more games like that from them.
Intelligent Qube was mentioned too, damn. That game had a soundtrack that was way too good for the rest of the game. Not to say the game was bad, because from a design point, it was amazing, but even for the time it was released, the graphics were really bad. But dat soundtrack…
This game is amazing as a game to play with friends, drunk or sober. What happens to those frogs in Ribbitopia stays in Ribbitopia…
Would the Ys series be considered obscure enough? I would have said so even 5 years ago, but I don’t know so much anymore. If so, I’d put any of the remakes up here (Ys I & II Chronicles, Origin, Ark of Nephistim, Oath in Felghana, Seven, Memories of Celceta) as damn solid games. Most people I know that know of Ys managed to play Ys 3 or 4 on the SNES, and from what I remember, those games… weren’t good.
