When Dark Phoenix is activated, XFactor then do an unblockable with Maya on Turnabout Mode
I’ve got some Phoenix players fall for it, but in some matches the person did actually block it.
(I’ve been lurking in the forums for more than a year, but I decided to make an account just recently and decided to ask this.)
You should probably do Maya first, then X-Factor, then do the unblockable. This would be easier to do after DHCing into Maya. What’s your team?

But if I try to do Maya hyper as soon as Dark phoenix is activated, only the flash begins and then I’m blown up by the explosion.
It’s not the best way to fight her, but I like to spam Order in the Court.

Maya has about 15 frames of startup while it takes 30 something frames for phoenix to go dark iirc. U could realistically kill her in a grounded state, use Maya’s hyper and immediately x factor before the burst and she would be forced to block Maya and possibly eat an “unblockable” set up. But yeah I’ve had it blocked enough times to know that it probably won’t work 100%. Sry I can’t test, been pretty busy since evo and havn’t even got my x box and monitor set up again x.x’
It definitely works if you DHC into him. This video shows pretty much all of the currently known anti-Phoenix strategies and at around 1:15 it features PW.
I actually came up with something just now. This probably applies more to Uglywhen than anyone else though. It’s basically a setup into Spencer’s anti-phoenix tech if you’re short on meter to DHC.
In the corner if you can kill Phoenix on the last hit of Maya Smelting, you can tag in Spencer immediately > dash in > block the explosion > xf command grab. Timing is strict and setup is specific since you need the last hit of Maya to even get a chance to dash in with Spencer. Also since she’s on the ground, it’s essentially a 50/50 since if you think she’ll upback you anti air command grab her, if you think she’ll downback, just regular command grab. Not sure if she can mash out. It’s not guaranteed but it’s something.
For the second setup it’s a bit easier setup wise but timing is still iffy assuming you’re using Spencer. It’s extremely easy if you have anyone with an air grab super. Basically just kill with Order in the Court and use Wright’s invincibility frames while he’s spinning to get in position for an air grab super like Frank or She Hulk. This is pretty reliable from the little I played with it. For spencer, I just did bionic arm to avoid the explosion but xfactored it before it hit phoenix so it puts you in that 50/50 game like earlier. Though really you would only want to attempt this setup if you’re not in the corner to do the easy Bionic Manuevers setup.

Good stuff to Ugly for his placing. Was this close to making me eat my words about a wright player never getting top 32 at evo lol. It’s good to see you’re trying to learn other characters. Firmly believe a competent wright player can become downright scary if they pick up other characters that are actually good. The amount of fundamentals and constant good decision making a wright player has to make is actually really helpful. You should look into Modok or Viper
Its a shame I don’t get to fight phoenix too often down here, but I have practiced a couple set ups against her. Still getting the x factor timing down with spencer is one of the more difficult things to do consistently and she has to die with the right move in the corner so I rarely get to use these in a match. Been practicing things like empty bionic arm to xfc command grab to get in on certain characters like Morrigan, but I get the impression that the 5 frame start up lets them dash away during the x factor freeze. Still after seeing it work in the nemo v champ ft20 I really should work on that set up more. Also Maya is great for killing Phoenix, I remember ragequit using just OitC xfc Maya smelting and it seemed to be a pretty solid trap set up in the corner.
i only picked up PW like a week ago and modok is so awesome with him. PW assists don’t really extend Modok’s optimal combos, BUT it allows for some really tricky unblockable setups. I am currently testing modok/pw/vergil as I need to get more vergil practice in and his rapid slash assist gives me some breathing room. (i’m sure when my opponents get wise to punishing that assist this team won’t be as good.)
My phoenix wright is incredibly fraudulent. I rely on getting a kill with modok to help me get evidence and I just try to create space and get into turnabout mode ASAP. tahts’ all he does. Wish i had better non trial combos.
I too play Wright with Modok! I have a combo extension with Get 'em Missile that allows an extra forward H in the corner. Basically, when you have already used your wall bounce, call PW, Forward H, and then light psionic blaster. This will give you time to do another forward H into whatever you normally would. I stole it from an LTP video lol That guy’s Dok guides are too good.
I’m not a fan of modok but couldn’t you use lv 2 thc with Modok and wright kind of like Dante and wright to get evidence?
Also, How would Wright(Get em missile)/Dante(Ham session)/Arthur(Daggers) do? I know not the best team but really want to play Arthur XD
I loved PW with Jam Session when I used to play Dante. As for Arthur, just copy Rikir’s Dante/Arthur tech lol
I see why people love it it’s just my Dante is 95% Ass right now, don’t know how to open people up with him and doing combos
