OBJECTION! - The Phoenix Wright Thread

Good on Polt for making Top 16. Shame he didn’t make farther, but a Nick makin’ it that far is an accomplishment in of itself.

Wright secret top tier?

^If only that was true.

IMO I think Hulk and Doom did the most work and carried Polt to top 16. Even though Wright didn’t do much it helped that the opponents were probably unfamiliar with Wright, if he faced a zoning team or a character that’s good at zoning he probably would’ve lost earlier.

Still it’s good he reached far in the tourney.

What do you think WRight plays better against? Zoning or Rushdown?

On a somewhat related note, Maya needs more than 250K life. 500k sounds fair.

Oh that’s a tough question it depends on what characters (Wesker, Zero, Skrull, Magneto, and Vergil makes it hell for Wright on rushdown while Zero, Magneto, Dormammu, Hawkeye, Morrigan, or super jump zoners with assist makes it hell too for Wright on Zoning) and team comp (I guess going with Polts type of comp).

But I would say he does better against rushdown because if they’re rushing down and you hit them with your back off assist you get some breathing space and be able to setup a position, plus papers work well against some rushdown too so no need for specific evidence (if you’re gutsy).
Compared to a barrage of projectiles where the enemy and the assist can just lay back in a corner and chip you and plus needing the watch or photo if you want to fight back. Like you pointed out her low life can’t withstand the mass projectiles, I’m just playing guesses but if say Polt were to use plasma beam instead against that Zero player he possibly could have forced him to go rushdown since plasma beam might be able to cut through it.

I think if Wright were to have faster startup on Trial projectiles and with increased Maya health or be able to call Maya in trial he might be able to deal with zoning a little bit better.

Hmm that would be cool, another idea I had for helping Wright against zoning would be to make evidence present air okay. This way he would be able to snipe opponents who shoot him with projectiles from super jump height even without cellphone. Make it stop his fall similar to Haggar’s whiffed command grab. This would also give presenting bad evidence a purpose as he could simply use it to stop moving and change his jump arc. Maybe allow him to use it twice in the air?

Y’know what would be a cool buff? Letting Paperwork work like Dorm’s spells (come out after one frame, regardless if hit or not). This would let us plink in Trial/Turnabout and have both the papers and evidence come out. Right now, the evidence effectively cancels the papers before they come out. The change would cause both to come out, since the interruption would not… interrupt the paperwork coming out. It would also give Wright a decent, albeit trading, anti-air.

Honestly, I feel like the best buff they could give him would be to either extend/remove turnabout’s timer or give turnabout Wright some legit mixups. At the moment, he has all the tools to be the ultimate defensive keepaway character. Fast high durability projectiles, Dhalsim range pokes (finger), and invincible “get off me” supers with Order in the Court and Ace Attorney. At the same time we lack strong mixups. We have a good overhead with J. H, but our only lows are his centimeter long cr. L and the last hit of the Maya super which is great for unblockables but really tough to land on certain characters if they can evade the incoming mixup. His left-right’s are a little weak with the only practical one being cell phone crossunder. Despite all of this we are forced to rushdown because of the timer. With either of the above changes turnabout mode would turn into an extreme gamechanger, maybe I am asking for too strong of a buff though. What do you guys think?

The thing with Phoenix is that he can’t be too amazing. Removing the timer would be ridiculous because then Wright would be Morrigan without needing meter or cancels. And while I do wish Turnabout had a whole different set of normals to help him confirm, I doubt that they would add that out of anything.

Turnabout really needs a longer timer. 20 seconds (I think it’s twenty seconds @.@) just isn’t enough. It’s fine if the opponent is pressing buttons or something, but you have to do so much to anyone that can just flight or even up back and punished a mistimed H. By the time you land anything you’ve either wasted too much time or have been punished for a mistake. That, and making Paperwork Storm more lockdown effective would be nice. Or instead of increasing time, buff the evidence.

Yeah. Infinite Turnabout is too much. Going from 20 seconds to 30 or even 40 would be nice. I would also agree that Wright’s Turnabout mixup game needs a buff. Even just cr:h: hitting low would be good. Buffing either papers and/or evidence would be nice.

Just thinkin’: Can you option select j.:h:/air throw by doing :f:/:b::h: in the air?

If notations are broken:
j.H/air throw with f/b.H in the air?

I suppose you guys are right infinite turnabout would be broken the more I think about it. I just wish we had some way to either mix the opponent up or force them to press buttons. Maybe a command grab? He could whip out his Magatama and a giant Psychelock goes over the opponent or something I dunno lol. Anyway, Metaskipper I don’t see why not. Afterall Vergil, Nova, Wolvy, etc. all Option Select throws with their H moves so I would think it would work the same way here I suppose I could test in the lab.

I’ve been saying this since forever. He could also use it in investigation mode.

I do it all the time, especially when I’m near the corner.

A command grab in investigation mode and maybe trial would be cool maybe Gumshoe comes out of nowhere tackles the opponent for a hard knockdown and gives Wright a piece of evidence. (I mean he does assist Wright in his games occasionally in trial and while investigating.)

I guess I would like to see these changes too:

Folder: You can control the direction (forward, up forward, and upward) where the orb will be, I mean it’s good space control but it’s just unreliable since it’s random where it’ll go.

Watch: You can shoot this upforward it would help him out a bit maybe.

It’s just a shame since the other cast can do what turnabout mode Wright does for less effort. I mean cellphone spam Morrigan Doom is kinda like it, long range normals Level 4 Frank and Vergil can do it.

Which do you think is the right way to go: Make Turnabout easier to get? Make Turnabout stronger? Make Investigation and Trial stronger? Some mix?

Man if Wright gets buffs I want that command grab. Just let it cause dizzy like she hulk’s and you got something useful, but not too op since you can’t dizzy twice.
Also an air special of some sort would be nice so I’m not doing a hail mary every time I super jump and can’t even turn around. Paperwork would be great as it would leave a vertical trail as he lands or takes off, and could cover multiple angles.
I also wouldn’t mind if they exchanged some of turnabout’s effectiveness for more time. Otherwise I’m pretty content with the Wright as is, and sadly I realize I’m just going to have to make due for 10 more years. >.<

I think that Capcom should change PW so that he is actually a Turnabout character. Maybe allow Turnabout mode to be permanent ONLY if there are no characters left.

Permanent Turnabout is too much. But I think it should last longer depending on how many characters you have left. The time should increase if you tag Wright out and lose other characters/lose assists while Wright is out, even if you already got Turnabout.

Really need to get another copy of the game. My first one broke, and I need to practice my plinking.

I fail to see how infinite turnabout would be too strong, turnabout wright is so easy to run away from if he doesn’t have the phone. You can just upback all day(granted once you get them to the corner you can go for an unblockable) or fly away from him.

Frank get’s to keep his amazing mode, why can’t we? In a game full of stupid shit, how could you guy’s not want wright to be good too?

But as to what I would change for wright

Imo the most important thing would be to get rid of bad evidence, he didn’t have this in his game and it would make getting turnabout mode more consistent. We already have combo’s and set ups that let us get a bunch of evidence, this would just make it easier.

  • Papers and evidence are air ok in trial and turnabout mode, this would let us zone better and keep on the move as well.
-Extend the range on investigation and trial wrights normals
-increase wright’s movement speed a bit
-have access to maya in every mode, make it a reverse srk for trial and turnabout. Or just replace qcf papers with her.
-possible lv1 super to go into turnabout mode with a shorter duration?

You have to have at least one piece of evidence, and be in trial.
Each piece of evidence makes it last 5 seconds longer.
1 piece=5seconds
2=10seconds,
3=15seconds.

After it’s over you lose all your evidence like normal.

Frank can’t fight against zoning. Wright is great at practically everything (In Turnabout).

I agree with the rest of your balance changes, except for Maya being accessible in Trial mode. Maya is good enough where a mode change or two is worth getting her out. Movement speed and longer range are nice, but if they are overdone he’ll be too strong.

Pretty much this, like I said before he would turn into the ultimate defensive keepaway character. I suggested it at first out of salt more than anything XD. The reason it would be overpowered is that he would be able to simply stand there and shoot projectiles all day until someone got into his range and then finger into meterless ToD. Characters like Hulk and Haggar would be a 10-0 matchup for turnabout Wright and even top tiers like Vergil and Zero would have no real answers to fight him as he could just use a hyper if they teleport or get into his comfort zone. He also has a 200% power bonus in any level of x-factor in turnabout and a 0-frame 600k level 3. If his opponent was down to one character he could just stand there, wait for them to do literally anything, and x-factor > Level 3 for the win. I do agree that some changes need to be made to make him a good tournament character but we need to be careful what we ask for. Being a level up character, there is a very thin line he could fall into between terrible and completely broken. Right now he leans towards the former but the slightest buff could easily change that. I just think it is a shame they decided to balance turnabout by forcing him to rushdown with a timer and gave him no mixup options.
