If I’m fighting a character who can fly in the top of the Screen and I’m PW without cellphone I’m screwed. I find it really hard to get a hit when people fly away. I just end up switching characters and PW ends up not doing much.
Yeah, Wright stinks against flyers without Cellphone. sj.:h: is okay, but even then.
I don’t think dorm is as bad as you all say, I think wright has more trouble against his ambiguous jump h and jump s. Also do you think it’s worth it to keep looking for evidence till you get cellphone, for some match ups.
It’s a VERY dangerous game to play. Are you willing to give up a potential Turnabout mode for a Cellphone you may not find in time? On the flip side, if you NEED that Cellphone, then I suppose you could argue the match is lost either way, so go for it. But still, be VERY careful throwing away good evidence in search for a better one. “A document in hand is worth a cellphone in the bush.”
If I’m fighting a fly happy character like Dorm, Magento or Nova I’ll make sure to get the cellphone. Otherwise I’ll stick with what I get.
I don’t have much Dormammu experience but I find that there is a sweet spot where none of his pillars hit and he’s forced to use dark holes. Also, if he’s charging spells you should be getting evidence. Oh, and the judge hyper will negate his chaotic flame and stalker flare. Order in the court DHCed into an install super against chaotic flame is sick because the DHCed character gets to dance about while the massive flame coming out his hands does nothing.
I think it depends on how aggressive the Dormammu player is. If they’re zoning, just collect evidence. If they’re going in, switch or DHC. Once you have all your evidence, I probably would get out, since it’s very difficult to get in on him for the Objection, and DHC or TAC back in. If you’re willing to blow X-Factor, though, you can punish a Stalker Flare if you’re close enough, XF, and Object.
Dorm is a scary match for wright because if you make one mistake even if he doesn’t kill you for it you will probably need to get out quickly or risk getting pinned and chipped out. At the same time dorm is a slow char so if you can maneuver wright out of harms way finding evidence in between dark spells and whiffed pillars is easy. I feel the sweet spot for fighting dorm is between where the heavy and medium pillars come out since he won’t throw a pillar if ur too close, but try to stay in range of one or the other to bait it and dash to safety the moment you see him starting it up.
I think the real problem here is actually drones, and the only advice I can give is whatever you do don’t get caught blocking drones. Maya shield can negate this if called early enough, but it really is one of the worst assists for wright to get pinned by so avoid it as best you can. I suggest trying a different matchup or save finding evidence for when sentinel goes on point. I’m sure your team as a whole can handle it though, so go rep that wright!
That said, Sentinal as an opposing assist can be ironically very helpful. He stays out so long it’s practically a free Objection done properly.

IT LIVES!
'sup everyone! I just got back from the tourney and here’s the log on my matches.
I won my first match easily, the guy didn’t know how to fight Wright and kept attacking while Maya’s shield was active, won 2-0… After a while I checked my bracket with a judge and after I saw it I was really nervous to know that I get to fight Jan del Rio next.
The match begun, he picked his Hulk/Haggar/Sentinel team (but he started Sentinel on point before the match, idk why) and I picked my regular team (Wright/Frank/Zero). On the first match he tried to grab me with Hulk, but got away as fast as I could, he tried to “zone” me with Gamma Waves maybe thinking that I couldn’t do anything with that but instead (as some of you might know or not) I used that as an opportunity to get evidence. I won luckily the match because he had Hulk on anchor and I had Wright with Turnabout, he had like half life and X-Factor, he tried to go for a ground command grab (or something, cause he didn’t block) but I did a j. :h: and got him, did a Turnabout Loop and then X-Factored right after the stun and used Maya’s super (cause I didn’t have 3 bars) and took out Hulk.
On the second match he kept his team but switched to Haggar on point this time, got all my evidence and didn’t get too much damage and raw tagged Zero. I think he combo’ed me but dropped the combo in the end, then I got a Happy Birthday cause he called Sentinel and did a Lariat with Haggar, so I played the footsies game and got 'em both. Killed Sentinel and got Wright into Turnabout mode.
After Hulk got in, I raw tagged Zero (again) and got owned, then managed to Level up Frank to Level 3 (I can’t recall right now how did I did it) and Jan activated XFC, I stayed away from Hulk the whole time he activated X-Factor, still had Turnabout Wright and ran like 20 in-game seconds, when the timer was like 10 seconds for timeout he gave up and I won the match, sending Jan del Rio to the Losers Bracket.
I don’t remember my 3rd match but won 2-0, too.
After that match I played the Winners Semifinals from my pool against EM Yahiko (Iron Fist/Chris/Dante), since the match was on-stream I got a bit nervous and lost 2-0, I would’ve lost 2-1 but on the TV we were playing UMvC3 wasn’t up-to-date (Ver 1.0… Wright’s Invincible Assists, XFC Bugs, etc).
Then on the Losers side I eliminated someone named NovaChamp (Nova/Spencer/Sentinel) 2-0 and then faced Jan again and he got his payback.
On the first match he picked his Dormammu team thinking about it as a counter-pick for Wright but it didn’t go so well for him, took out Dormammu without trouble and actually made him cancel his Stalking Flare using Frank’s Assist (I was blocking the ball in the air and Frank got out in time to hit Dormammu while he was in his recovery frames (?) after the animation). After I won that match he switched to his Hulk team.
I got nervous on the second match and didn’t block with Frank, I thought I blocked but I did a backdash instead, then DAT PAIPU got me and Frank died, then I got crossed up with Haggar with Turnabout Wright and I don’t remember the end.
On the third match he got a HBD and killed Zero, luckily he didn’t kill Wright and got all my evidence, blahblah, in the end he got me with Wright using a Grab… I dropped the combo against his Haggar (his last character) cause I did j. :h: before Maya was done with her super and didn’t confirm it to prevent the dropped combo. Then ended up getting owned by a grab. The match ended up 2-1, Jan’s favor.
tl;dr
[details=Spoiler]I almost made it out of my pool to get into Top 18, sent Jan del Rio (Hulk/Haggar/Sentinel) to Losers Bracket, on my Winners Pool Semifinals EM Yahiko (Iron Fist/Chris/Dante) beat me 2-0.
Back to my matches I eliminated some guy named NovaChamp (Nova/Spencer/Sentinel) and then faced Jan again and he got his payback, we ended up 2-1, Jan’s favor, therefore he eliminated EM Yahiko, which was sent to the Losers Bracket by EM Pony (Magneto/Doom/Task) on that pool’s Winners Finals.[/details]
I almost made it out of my pool to Top 18, but, oh well… I guess I need to train harder!
Also, Top 18 out of 140~ Marvel entrants isn’t that bad, I guess…
Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I tried my best
Greetings from México
Edit: By the way, got Sentinel 2 times and Haggar once with a Free Objection!
Good shit, man. We’re gonna get there someday.
Good stuff man. Honestly surprised you got that far with wright and frank on the same team haha. Really wanted to see your neutral game with wright but the stream was choppy. Regardless man it’s good to see people going to offline tourneys. You have another team btw? It looks like your zero’s solid so you may wanna pick up dante and vergil
I think we have to get to a point where we’re getting Turnabout much more reliably. I see a lot of matches where Wright gets all the evidence, gets to Trial mode, and then dies.
^ Yeah that’s true. It’s really difficult cause you can take 1 out of 2 approaches after you get 3 solid pieces: tag or fight with wright. If you chose to tag then you have to do it safely. It would require you to change back to inves., call a shield, change back to trial and then bounce which requires a lot of time in a game like marvel. You can also chose a remotely safe time to tag like if your incoming char’s gonna eat a projectile or something small like that.
If you chose to fight then I feel the best thing you can do is play a near perfect defense with paper/evidence/assists/mode changes in order to catch them slipping so you can smack them with the bridge. If you wanna fight then good assist would be ones that lockdown and can otg like pillar/missiles since you can air grab or hit them with wright’s overhead then get a free bridge. It’s taxing as hell but I feel it’s plausible
Yeah… there were a LOT of troubles with the stream… I got nervous that my match against EM Yahiko got streamed, so that’s why I lost (I dropped a Happy Birthday! :()
By the way, this was my first major and first high-level tournament ever. Even the guys at the event asked me if this was my first tourney ever.
Concerning the other team, well… I don’t really use my good ol’ Vanilla team now that I’ve dedicated most of my time to Wright, but I was considering to go Zero/Wright/Dormammu at the tournament but I dropped that idea in the end…
So I don’t really have a “fixed” 2nd Team.
Also thanks for the Zero comment, some friends say it still needs a little bit of work, now concerning Dante/Vergil (a.k.a. a ZMC Team)…
I was messing up with Dante once with the Lab, I like his moves and such but it’s too difficult to me to Bold Cancel into Air Trick from a Level 2 Stinger on my pad…
And… well… a Dante that doesn’t know how to Bold Cancel is often considered as a fraud Dante, haha! That’s why I “dropped” Dante…
Concerning Vergil… I don’t know how to do the Spiral Sword Loop and I don’t really want to pick him cause he’s one of the most used characters in the game and I don’t want to pick him cause other people might say I’m a “tier whore”…
One day Wright will be mid-tier. Low mid, but mid.
I really think DHCing out, and then back is the the safest way. Eats a lot of bar, though.
Gonna make team Normal Dudes:
Phoenix Wright/Haggar/Frank West. Or some order like that.
You can always keep practicing dante etc. My doom’s straight ass but he really helps my team so I’m learning the latverian ropes. As for your morals on not using vergil, lol trust me if you keep planning on going to competitive tourneys you’ll strip them away. It’s literally “whose cheap is the cheapest”. Don’t let tier whore comments or any comments for that matter affect you cause at the end of the day you’re doing what’s best for you. You’re still gonna need strong fundamentals in order to place well; picking the higher tier just makes things slightly easier for you. For example playing dormmamu defensively is more effective than playing wright defensively simply because dorm has more to work with.
Definitely not discouraging you from playing wright as that’s never my intention. I’m just saying if you plan to go to more of these things, have some backups in mind.
It’s okay dude, no prob
I’ll start saving from now on in order to attend more offline tournaments out of my city.
My next goal will definetely be Top 16!
By the way… see you at The Beatdown! I join that lobby every now and then!
Edit: By the way, how do you do the TAC Glitch with Wright?
People still play Wright? He doesn’t work in this game, lol. Go play somebody else, like Strange.
