Nurarihyon no Mago: Hyakki Ryouran Taisen

Here’s some more information I translated from here: http://www.konami.jp/products/nura_ps3/info.html
I only translated information relevant to the battle system.

Team Battle
During battles in Nurarihyon no Mago Hyakki Ryouran Taisen, in addition to the Supreme Commander you are controlling, you take your aides and minions and form one team to do battle.

During battle directing your aides and the timing of summoning your minions are vital tactics and utilizing these components are essential to how battles unfold.

Because each character has different abilities and characteristics, you’ll be able to develop many different strategies depending on how you construct your team.

Experiment with all of the combinations and create the strongest team!

Combine your power with your companions and claim victory!
As you defeat your opponents, the Influence Gauge at the bottom of the screen increases. Once your team’s side of the gauge fills up, victory is yours!

Team Composition

Supreme Commander
The player controlled character acts as the main character. In addition to issuing attack and defense commands to the aides, you can also summon minions.

Aides – Command-able
During “Guard Mode”, the aides automatically take action to protect the Supreme Commander, while in “Attack Mode” they focus on attacking the enemy. The aides can automatically switch between these two modes, but the player can also command them directly.

Minions – Summon-able
During battle you can summon them and they appear for a fixed time to battle. You can set up a formation of up to 8 minions.

“Shima” and Fear Gauge
Breaking Shima will give you benefits during battle

Throughout the stages are stones called “Shima” placed around and breaking them gives a fixed amount of damage to your team. (This is worded strangely, but I think it’s saying breaking these will allow you to heal.)
Reclaim taken Shima!
As the number of Shima increases, you will be able to summon powerful minions!

Build up your Feat Gauge to unleash a powerful strike!
By attacking the enemy and claiming Shima, your Fear Gauge increases.
Build up your gauge to unleash your ultimate technique or your Hyakki Yakou Technique to finish the battle in an instant!

With 50% of the gauge you can unleash your ultimate technique!
With 100% of the gauge you can invoke your Hyakki Yakou Technique!

A note about the “Shima”: Shima can mean “territory”, which in the context of this series would make sense if that’s how they mean it here. The stones here are referred to as “Shima” as if they are a proper noun, so I didn’t translate it. Essentially you destroy the Shima to control the territory around them. It’s probably best to think of them “Territory Stones.”

Another note: If you’re familiar with the series you’ll know that “Hyakki Yakou” refers to the Commander’s “Night Parade of 100 Demons.”

Website has been updated with 4 match videos from the tournament: http://www.konami.jp/nuramago/game/cam/index.php

New scans from the Magic Box.

Aksys brought the game out to Norcal Install today and it’s being streamed

Just watched from the stream; game is mad hype.

Do you know which video has the Nurarihyon footage? Two of the videos have the title in but I skipped through them and couldn’t see any :frowning:

Same here, couldn’t find it and I thought I skipped about in all of them.

I think this is all of them:

Oh, they were in separate little clips. I looked in the big ones lol
Thanks

Does anyone have access to the translations for the “trials”. Looking for help in unlocking all of the minion cards.

Anyone got this game?

Yes I have the game. It’s absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend this to fans of the series, fans of Arc Systems Works, and fans of fighting games in general. The game has as much depth as you would expect from an Arc System Works game while staying true to the source material. Feel free to ask me any questions about it. For people that have it and need help I have a Mission FAQ up on GameFAQs and can answer any other questions about the game.

Hi,

I just found out about this game the other day and I’m tempted to get a PS3 copy. I have a few basic questions. If you can link me to all the info in English that would be great.

  1. Is it 1v1 or can up to 4 players play?
  2. Can you write an input of a simple BnB combo?
  3. The characters that follow you, do you control them? And how? (e.g. a tag-out method where you choose which character to use, and if so, what do the characters do when you don’t use them?)
  4. Is it a 4-button game like BB?

Sorry for the n00b questions & thank you for your patience XD

Sadly there are not a lot of resources about the game in English besides the information I’ve translated and my personal accounts of having played it extensively. The good news about that though is that you have me as a resource and I’ll answer any questions you have as thoroughly as you would like.

It would help if you could tell me whether or not you’re familiar with Nurarihyon no Mago since we could work on some shared terminology. Since I don’t know if you are or not, I’ll answer your questions as best I can without relying on that as a knowledge base.

  1. Yes the game is up to 4 players. The way the game works is that each side has a leader and they can have up to two helpers. If you’re playing with 3 or 4 players, those people will be on a team with a leader. The only major difference between being a leader or a helper is that only a leader has access to their character’s level 2 special attack. The 3rd and 4th players can pick what side they want to be on and you can choose whether or not you want helpers at all. So you can do 2 vs 3, 3 vs 2, 2 vs 1, etc.

  2. This answer will sort of answer your 4th question too, but I’ll get to that in more detail later. The characters’ movesets are more similar to Super Smash Brothers or Jump Ultimate Stars if you are familiar with those games. You have regular attacks on the square button and techniques on the triangle button. Generally the characters’ movesets differ drastically from each other, so BnBs differ somewhat between people. Overall though, the key to chaining combos is to combo your square combo into a triangle technique, jump cancel into an aerial square combo, jump cancel again for another combo. Once you get really good there are some guard crushing combos you can chain together that revolve around your square combo (which tends to be 3 to 4 hits depending on the character), jump canceling, immediately air dashing forward into a landing aerial combo that leads back into a ground combo, and repeating.

  3. The characters that follow you around are the helpers that I mentioned earlier. If a player is one of the helpers, as the leader you have no control over that character and they instead function as a fully playable character (minus the level 2 special attack) for the person playing. If a human player is not on your side then the helpers are computer controlled. You control one of them with the X button and the other with O. If you’ve seen gameplay videos of this you’ve probably seen times when the helper characters appear greyed out or like they’re in the background, which indicates that they are in “Defense Mode.” You can shift your helpers between Attack and Defense Mode by holding their assigned button. While they are in Defense Mode they appear greyed out and follow you around and guard your character’s back so you won’t get automatically guard broken from attacks from behind. While they are greyed out they are invincible, but they become vulnerable when they actively defend your back. Also while in Defense Mode, you can tap the button that they are assigned to to make them attack so you can time their attacks into combos with your own; this also makes them vulnerable. Additionally, if you use your charge attack, which is executed by holding forward and square for most characters, any helpers you have in Defense Mode will follow the opponent after you launch them to continue the assault. If you switch your helper to Attack Mode they roam the battle field freely as a CPU and fight.

  4. Yes all 4 buttons are used, but not like BB. As I said above, two of the buttons are used to control your character and the other two are used to direct your helpers. If you don’t have helpers or your helpers are controlled by another human player then they are not used. The depth of this game comes not from the complexity of the attack execution, instead it comes from the strategy required to manage the many things going on throughout the battle at once. As the leader you have to control your playable character, direct your helpers and switch them between Attack and Defense Modes as needed, maintain control over the battlefield by claiming the floating Stones around the level, using your summon characters that are controlled by the right analog stick, and much more. Having human players on your team instead of computers lightens the load of what you physically have to manage in terms of button control, but adds even more depth by requiring you to strategize in real time with another person and to make sure you keep them alive. Overall the controls are fairly simple and learning the basics of the game is not too difficult. The game truly shines in creating the best team of summon characters that suit your style and learning how to efficiently command your team.

There’s much more to the game in terms of controls than what I just mentioned; I tried my best to give you a quick rundown of everything. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. It is very fun and having to manage so much at once is what makes playing the game so rewarding.
