Honestly there are people doing that on both “sides”…
This topic wouldn’t even generate controversy if people didn’t always go up in arms about GODDAMN CAPCOM KIDS or GODDAMN ANIME KIDS.

Not sure how much good me posting here will do, but this will probably be my last time posting in this thread since this “controversy” is silly to me.
It’s okay to have your own preferences what notation to use, but you must accept and respect the fact that other fighting game communities have a different set of notations that they use. I personally prefer numerical notations, but I respect the “Capcom notation” that the regular SF, Marvel, etc. players use for their games and whenever I look up Makoto strats, bam, instantly switched my “notation lens” from “Numerical” to “Capcom.” When learning another fighting game, it is strongly recommended that you learn the notation that the community that revolves around said game uses, just to show that you accept the way they notate their game(s) and that you respect it, despite your differences with it.
I remember back in '06, the first fighting game I took somewhat seriously was Guilty Gear XX Slash. It only took me a day or two to get used to numerical notations. And then I remember somewhat getting into Marvel 2 with some friends and family in '07 and their different notations only took me only a day to understand it. It’s not that hard people.
Just showing that there are people who are neutral in this “issue” and lol, nobody is being butthurt.

Who cares? Seriously? If you want to learn the game, learn the notation that community accepts. End of fucking story. I used to feel like some entitled Capcom game snob, going over to dustloop, requesting they use SF notation instead of numbers… end result? I don’t go to DustLoop.
so how do you learn the GG stuff o_O
Massive amounts of videos… and talking to people on SRK who were kind enough to use the Capcom notation.
A lot of Capcom players are the ones who put themselves into a stereotype, not me.
I’m not dissing anyone just because said person prefer SFIV or MvC3 - thing is, these players prefer to whine and complain instead of either adapting to or broaden their minds knowing a little better of other non-Capcom titles - instead of shitting them without any logical reason.
If this wasn’t true, people wouldn’t get so annoyed at some comments, even if they aren’t addressed into anyone specifically. If the cap fits, wear it, I guess.
:razzy:
Hey guys. I use both based on when I perceive one is shorter than the other. When they’re the same, I stick to the game’s perceived standard.
If I’m describing input intricacies, I tend to end up using numbers, because I may be referencing multiple motions or shortcuts repeatedly. Also, it’s way easier to write out numbers, since I have a number pad right here. It kind of let’s me plot out a complex motion with sight, as well.
I interchange when it’s convenient to do so. You can all do the same if you want…
If I’m telling you all the DP shortcuts in SFIV, I’m not going to spell it out for you with letters or smileys, it would take forever.

Fuck yooooooooouuuuuu.
Didn’t someone use parentheses to indicate any input with leniency, so in this case, I believe DPs in IV would simple by noted as:
( :f: )( :d: )( :f: )
Meaning any forward, any down, any forward.

Hey we all definitely have time to go look up the unicode codepage every time someone asks us for notations. Especially when we’re on a phone or something.
i love how some of you feel that this topic deserves such bitching as if these were something more than convention and forms of expression. more legitimate comparisons and actual observations and less pathetic…partisanship, please.
also lol at people bringing up various us-them dichotomies into this. (WAH WAH CAPCOM, WAH WAH ANIME) are you twelve years old? go dump your pent up rage on a blog.
Not happening. Not now, not ever.
fffff
i think i just got "exposed"
by a player from japan
i can barely believe this
posting is my best game
Yeah, I think you’re considered “on blast” at the moment, if I’m not mistaken.
Am I the only person that finds the smilies hard to scan? I’m fine with either ‘capcom’ notation or Number notation, but maybe that’s just the Canadian in me (The rest of the world uses metric, just not our primary trading partner; so we need to learn both).
However out of:
5ABCD J.ABC J.236A D J.BC J.236C 236B+C
ABCD j.ABC j.QCF+A D j.BC j.QCF+C QCF+B+C
and
:l::h::s: j.:l:
:h: j.:qcf::l: :s: j.
:h: j.:qcf::l: :qcf::atk::atk:
I find the last one the hardest to read and most difficult to enter into a post. I think it has to do with how the smilies space out, and how the arrows look similar and require more than a cursory glance at (need to process both the directions they point, as well as the buttons after and before it).
Also, Number notation isn’t some crazy thing that the japanese came up with. Using the numbers on a numpad to denote cardinal directions has been around since the earliest of home computer games. You use the numbers on the numpad as directions in old textgames, dungeoncrawlers, roguelikes, and topdown games. There’s a reason a lot of numpads (especially on older keyboards) have arrows on them. It also made telling people which of the cardinal directions they need to move in via IRC or Usenet painfully simple.
Also the “QCF” notation hasn’t really always been the standard, they never used it in japan (where these games come from), and in the original days of posting information online about arcade games people would often use the numbers on a clock, or numpad to denote directions, because they were something easily readable and could quickly be understood or cross-referenced by someone at a computer/wearing a watch.
In my experience there is no real standard. 99% of my time on forums for fighting games its just been for 3s, and even then people cant settle on FP or HP, RH or HK, SRK or DP+P, etc.
I voted annoying, but of course thats because I only play 1 version of SF. When I played MB for a bit it was the first time I saw numeric notation, but I got used to it. It’s just annoying to me to see people use numpad notation for 3s since nobody typically uses it, but if I were playing a game where that was the standard I’d use numpad notation too.
Didn’t you know? SRK is the new LiveJournal…
The fuck it is. Mash the report button. Tools will be taken care of.
