I attempted to focus rainbow ball in that match and it broke my focus, I also experienced this in casuals.
This only happens when it hits me around the back of the head, not when it’s in front though.
I’m not sure why this is happening, the move has armor breaking qualities?
It was a reversal Rainbow Ball, any special move that is a reversal breaks armor.
The only ball of Blanka’s that has armor break on its own aka non reversal is his straight ball. Both up ball and rainbow can’t armor break unless its a reversal.
a blocked sweep from blanka is a free cr.lk SK combo
Wow I didn’t know 50/50 hits ex dr/hs I have been using it well ex dr mostly all this time.So basically by stuffs I assume you mean if he times it early. I will definitely test it out. I have even gotten away with ex scissors and when I had no bar ultra. The Blanka was doing tight stuff but he was on auto pilot. That being said cr.short st.fp OS stuffs rainbow roll in corner.Flash has a mean blanka and lp electricity frame trap is crazy.I just block mainly that what I have learned block and wait your turn to get out.
All balls, all strengths. Heavy ones are easier, although they’re all doable. Again, stand blocking helps ALOT.
Also, EX headstomp will get you out of the 50/50, provided you do it as a reversal.
@Guru
In my experience anyway, because if the Ultra crosses up it ends up coming down on top of Bisons head and rotates where you escape from - given that the Ultra hit box is rather large I always get caught.
It could just be my timing vs his timing though, I just know that I’ve lost to Exis enough in tournaments because of that Ultra that I don’t want to try out anything risky (any more risky than block).
I hadn’t considered EX Scissors as an escape, my concern is that if the Ultra crosses up do the scissors auto correct and you eat it on the other side?
Lots of useful info on the Blanka match up here, I’m learning a lot still :cybot:
thanks for the help guys, I just beat my first Blanka today in a long long time! He was a really good japanese player too so I’m happy!
Guru, what’s the OS for that? It will help me out a lot.
so just to get this straight, i wanna go over blanka’s wakeup options and what bison’s answers are to those:
roll (ex), upball (ex), rainbow (ex)
i think that’s it right? if you’re in the corner you can punish upball even if he hits you (that’s just sad but it makes sense since it’s just the property of the move), rolls are stuffable on wakeup by ? and rainbow there’s some sort of OS ? the best I’ve done is just to predict the rainbow roll since its his only ‘safe’ option and just st.roundhouse at the proper time (saw kuma do it lol). yeah so if you guys can help me get this straight it’d be much appreciated.
also, thanks for the tip with jumping roundhouse. I’ve actually been using that a lot to go air-to-air lately even against Chun and it’s been working out good. I’m starting to actually experiment with going air-to-air. I honestly think it’s not so much bison’s air-to-air moves that aren’t so great but it’s just that we bisons spend so much time on the ground that maybe our reaction time is just not good? i dont want to speak for anyone else but i honestly think that’s the case for me…bison’s air-to-air normals on paper seem really good. jumping roundhouse positions his body far away from his boot, his jumping fierce does the same but at a different angle and you could say the same for j.mk. i also find some pretty good success with j.jab too since it’s like a up+forward or up+back neutral jump fierce (but with no damage haha). what are your guys’ thoughts on going air to air, without the priority talk? i say that just because, as most of you know, there’s no such thing as priority, just angles, hitboxes and reaction time. it’s a nice shorthand, but are bison’s air-to-air normals really that mediocre bar hell attack?
St. :mk: I think is your safest option besides blocking as a meaty on Blanka, or stand outside of his upball range and focus so that he hesitates to use it (if he uses it it’ll whiff and you get a free throw/:hk:).
If he doesn’t have EX, then you’re free to abuse him with cr. :lk: xx :lk: scissors over and over, or cr. :mk:.
I think that all of Bison’s air to air are good, except against certain characters such as Chun-li and Guile.
If anyone jumps in at you, you can generally beat them air to air (unless it’s Chun or Guile). Sagat is hard to punish in regards to his peoples elbow but you can actually beat that with neutral j. :mk: or neutral j. :hp: / neutral j. :hk:.
I think Bison has excellent air to air, except for when the opponent is jumping backwards and throwing out a move - you’ll find you’ll lose in this situation with basically everything except j. :lp:.
In regards to upball in the corner, yep, he can hit you and you can punish him for it - but I only encounter this when I throw out a meaty st. :mk: - he hits me during the meaty and I recover fast enough to scissor kick him (2 hits).
I’m not sure what else you could get from that punish but that’s what I’ve found so far.
Blanka doesn’t hate Bison as much as Sagat though, Sagat can kara uppercut nearly all of his Balls on block or hit :wow:
I got one annoying tidbit. You can spam c.jab if he’s close to break his rolling attacks too. lol I do this on Ryu and it works if they’re sitting kinda halfscreenish or more away.
^This is true. However, Ryu’s cr.jab is faster and has a better hitbox. With Bison it sometimes randomly trades (in blanka’s favor) or gets counter hit by the ball. Even if it works most of the time, the damage isn’t really worth it considering that you can always punish the balls on block, something Ryu can’t do.
Cr.strong also beats out horizontal ball with correct timing.
I have been toying with throwing blanka in the corner then cr.short then OS st.hp. Basicallay if you are going to continue with scissor kick if the cr.short hits. If he does rainbow roll the st.hp nets you a nice free counter hit poke. They usually wont upball or horizontal because it is so punishable in the corner this is asuming the blanka player has a brain. So you start holding down then like the bnb combo you move from down to middle keeping your charge. Also I have been messing around with throw then teleport to opposite side to take away the rainbow roll option or ex headbutt for honda. You still have enough time for a plethora of optiuons.
I’m not sure that you’d wanna beat out Blanka’s ball, better to block as you can punish it harder - unless it’s a short ball aimed at throwing you that is.
Normally your correct there are better ways of inflicting damage but if blanka is in the corner position wise I really like to keep him there. Also if he is doing it midscreen he is aiming to hit you with rainbow roll where as in the corner he wants to change his position for a more desirable one. Blocking just lets him out of the corner.
how do you perform that cr.hp option select? i remember it came up at some point in regards to viper but i wasnt paying much attention at the time.
Me too. I’m one of those ‘baby steps’ players, so right now I’m mostly trying to learn how to use neutral jumps to stuff some jumping attacks. So far all I really know is that nj.roundhouse is pretty great for stuffing airborne opponents towards the end of their jump arcs (because you’ll be above them, and nj.roundhouse hitbox hits below), and early nj.fierce is pretty great for stuffing attacks when the opponent is in the beginning of their jump arc (because you’ll be below them and the hitbox kinda hits above you).
I actually had the fun idea to try and use nj.mk to stuff Sagat’s lk knee last night. I was kinda surprised it worked lol.
I find neutral jumps to be very good against Sagat as long as you don’t abuse them (if you do you’ll eat a forward heavy kick).
nj.hk/nj.mk beat every option Sagat has to advance from mid screen (excluding random upper).

Set vs Ryu on Ps3. My execution is a lot flakier on the PS3 with my lcd compared to the PC version on my crt monitor. I have a much harder time focus dashing through fireballs and I miss links and cancels more on the ps3 version but I am starting to readjust to it.
The very last match I crossed up him in a corner and I’m not sure why since it went against my whole game plan…pretty much in any match I’m taking seriously as Bison I’m trying to get myself to never crossup in the corner. Just keep the opponent in there and poke at their hp till they die.
Anyway any more advice would be appreciated.
You got to punish with the most damaging combo. You do short short short sk way to much that it looks like its just on auto pilot/muscle memory. You did cross up :r: short short sk and at one time i saw jumping :hp: and you could have hit confirm that to st :hp: xx sk for some real damage but decide to use short short sk. In a tourney match or high scale match that could have cost you the match cuz you are not punishing well. So when the match up is even or in the other person favor and you punish like that…its a wrap. Not taking away from your ability but that is what your Dictator is missing. I saw some good corner pressure and good use of footsie. Just work on that and you will see that you will dominate that match or matchs more on your favor big guy. Good shit.
