"Now, face the mighty Bison!" - Video Critique Thread

I have never heard so much clicking in my life, but very energetic and mobile Bison! Good stuff.

Thanks for the tips, I’ll keep that in mind.

Tried to record the best matches but it’s hard finding anyone worth a damn online…

Had some sets with my Bro

I would just like some advice on how to improve my defensive skills

A friend of mine uploaded a longer set (online casuals) between the two of us, Guile vs Dictator. We were both not very familiar with the matchup, expect to see lots of execution errors, mindless jumping around and random EX moves from me, really hard to get rid of these bad habits. I also go for throws way too much I think (especially after dashing under an opponent), always pretty painful to watch yourself play. Advice would be appreciated:

And please ignore the match where I picked Gouki, can’t play Fireball/SRK chars at all.

(Preface: My Bison kinda sucks!)

I only watched this one vid, but I thought it was great! Some really intelligent mixups, interesting setups, tricky crossups…

Two things I think could help your game:

 1. You didn’t capitalize on a lot of free jump-in combos. You worked hard to create the jump-in, landed it, landed a follow up c.forward or whatever, but then didn’t finish the combo with your scissors. Build dat charge!

 2. A little overzealous with EX PC’s. Prolly wiser to keep meter for times you actually need it, rather than just guessing at it and trying to catch dude sleeping.

Good shit, regardless!

Thx for the advice, good points!

i’m no expert but i’ll do some criticing:P (i watched the chun match)

as for improving defensive skills, why exactly? bisons defence is pretty crap; if anything from watching the match i’d say your defense is more adequate than your offense

some solid bison play, good strings albeit a few things I think could be done better.
-mid & long range EX-PC’s are a waste of meter
-when chun has no meter you can safely be in her face doing lk xx sk loops (& even when she does has meter as long as you’re careful)
-chuns fireball does very little damage, you can basically focus every one she spits out, no need to avoid every time
-you dont seem to use focus attack very offensively, i noticed you seemed to be trying to punish chun pokes with ex-pc, better off saving the meter and trying to punish with focus instead
-use meter more sparingly and less random dr’s in general lol
-dont be scared to focus -> dash in and go for a throw / string

Someone shed some light on the Bison vs. Dhalsim match. I had this one in my hands and let it slip away.

Really need to try focus dashing those limbs. Otherwise they just push you back. If you focus dash it moves you forward. I’m not great at the match up but its obviously very important.

First off, don’t slide against Dhalsim. You’ll either get stuffed or punished for it.

There was A LOT of wasted meter. What was the point of FADC’ing twice? Pushing the Dhalsim into the corner? That’s the right idea, but there a many more efficient ways to do so. Even then you should have mixed it up after the FADC instead of going for the same combo. You also wasted a lot of meter going for a 2 EX HS, followed by an EX DR. Why? He wasn’t anywhere close to being chipped to death, and any decent player would have just backdashed and punished you for it. You also wasted 2 more bars by FADC’ing out of a cr.forward? I’m guessing that was unintentional, but you have to get rid of execution errors like that.

Bison’s EX moves are less useful in this matchup because of Dhalsim’s ability to zone, so you should really save it for poorly timed fireball. Normally you can’t just EX SK through Dhalsim’s at mid screen, but once you get him into the corner you can punish him for any fireballs he might want to throw out. Outside of building meter, don’t use DR, you’ll get punished for it. HS is okay in this matchup since Dhalsim has a slow walking speed, but don’t throw it out randomly. Don’t followup with Skull Diver either, you’ll get punished just like with DR.

In my opinion, this is the only matchup that I think Bison’s super is useful. Mainly because you won’t get a lot of chances to use your EX moves, so you’ll probably have more meter than usual. If you see a chance to land the super (such as after landing a jump in, crumple, or crossup), you can use it for some good damage. Since Dhalsim already has below average health, you’ll be that much closer to winning.

You were doing a really good job of being patient and looking for openings, but once you got in you let up the pressure fairly easily. Keep Dhalsim locked down with cr.short -> lk SK. Don’t go for a long blockstring such as cr.jab x2 -> cr.short -> lk SK because it will only push you farther away from Dhalsim after the SK. You want to be as close to him as possible! You only need to unleash a big combo if you land a good jump in or a crossup.

The tick throw was working fairly well against this Dhalsim - you should of kept trying that. A lot of times you continued your cr.jab x2 -> cr.short -> sk combo, which again, will push Dhalsim farther away from you. Once you see him trying to crouch tech your tick throw attempts, then you can start using frame traps to net some big damage with CH combos.

Once you get inside, make use of s.RH more, especially if you have him in the corner. I noticed you threw out a lot of lk SK’s to keep the pressure up, but there were a few instances where he would either jump or teleport out to safety while you whiffed your attack. If you use s.RH instead, most of the time you’ll recover fast enough to react to him. As I’m sure you know, s.RH will fuck up any attempts to jump, so you can expect a teleport more often than not. At :51 seconds you used a scissor kick and he jumped over it - instead of s.short, hit him with a s.RH! I see this scenario ALL THE TIME and it really tips the match in your favor.

Speaking of s.RH - use it to punish teleport every single time! Unless if he’s trying his fireball shenanigans. If I recall correctly you punished 1 teleport with a s.RH, but other teleports you either blocked or used s.short.

Also, there was one instance where you threw out a j.fierce and it stuffed his AA. If you jump in with an early fierce, sometimes you can land a counterhit by stuffing Sim’s AA. It doesn’t work all the time, but it’s just another reason why Bison’s j.fierce is so great.

That’s all I can really think of now, but to recap -

1.) Don’t use long blockstrings against Dhalsim. You want to as close to him as possible at all times.
2.) More Roundhouse! Your use of SK to pressure him was good, but try not to throw it out all by itself.
3.) Don’t waste so much meter. If you want to FADC, it’s best to just attempt a throw. Most Dhalsim’s aren’t going to try to CH you with anything after a FADC.

the whiffed devil’s reverse after the headstomps was a bait into ultra that I missed (as you see he went for a grab so if the ultra went off he would’ve gotten hit).

other than that, thanks for the tips keep em coming!

Thanks dude

A few sets from a Chun I fought last night. We went 6-6 … it really shoud have been 8-4 in my favor though. My own thoughts:

– Poor meter usage w/ random EX SK/PC. I’m getting better with this, though.
– Too much close-range “SK as poke” getting me counterhit; this works sometimes but I was over-using it.
– Not enough s.MK. Getting better with this, too, though.
– Still missing a lot of BnB opportunities. Can do that shit in training mode all day, but I just lose it in matches.

What else? Hit me. Those are really some of the worse sets of the match … I was putting a lot more pressure on in the later matches that didn’t get recorded, after I remembered that Chun is pretty much safe on wakeup when she’s got no meter. But I figure my bad matches are better for critiquing.

moar safejumps dawg. saw lots of throws but no safejumps, its cool though safejumping chun is hard and requires precise timing. I’d spend a good thirty minutes or so in training mode working solely on the chun safejump. off of forward throw its one step, like hold forward during forward throw and let bison move just before his legs cross, no earlier no later, then jump in. off of backjump you have a lot of leniency, it’s about two and a half steps, bison crosses his legs and then a little bit more and jump in. you have a lot of leniency so depending on how early/late you jump in afterwards, if chun EX SBK’s, you might end up on the other side, so make sure to note which direction to keep charge.

oh also, too many missed combos. but thats cuz you were nervous probably, happens to me too.

this is also something i need to follow but if youre going to do nothing, at least try feints. whiffed shirts, whiff a throw, walk forward then backdash or PPP teleport, etc. my opinion is that if youre going to do nothing to try and get her to waste meter, you should at least make it convincing as possible.

Neat… I actually played ft10 with that same Chun like, two nights ago.

Chun already has the adv so dic need to make smart/effective desicions. Jump back lk will stop her jump ins (depends on spacing), ur goal should be to push her in the corner, sk’s her then bait out ex moves (rinse and repeat). I’d say just be more patient and think about spacing more…no need to keep doing moves (pressing buttons) if they dont net u any real adv.

Saw you get hit with maaaad axe kicks cuz you weren’t blocking high fast enough. But online lags, I don’t know how many bar connection you got with him, but if you had 4 bar it should be good enough to let you react to it.

It was 5 bars, I’m just bad :<

Okay guys, here are a couple of videos of me playing.
