Guys I’m trying to pick up Bison as a legit alternate, but I think my defensive tendencies could be letting me down. Here’s a match I played against a reasonable Vega.

I’m not a big fan of jumping especially with Bison, since his jump is pretty damn slow and easy to see coming miles away. But then again, Vega doesn’t really a real good anti-air. But once you see all the Bisons online jumping like no tomorrow so they can land their blockstrings, it makes you not want to jump at all.
Can you guys analyze the match, tell me what you think happened, make some recommendations on what I should be doing in this match and in general for Bison play?
For one, stop doing random EX-scissors. It’s unsafe, and the Vega wasn’t doing anything that justified the guess.
You’re turtling, but you give up space too easily. Vega outpokes Bison, but you need to stand your ground and not just keep walking yourself into the corner. If you’re in cr.lk range and you are both at even frames, then Bison has the advantage, since cr.lk beats all of Vega’s buttons.
Vega is weak on knockdown, and you need to capitalize on those instead of going for throw. He kept backdashing, which is something you can OS, but you need to be careful of his wakeup ultra. If you think he’s going to ultra, you can still meaty jab or short and you’ll block in time, but he’ll be free to backdash.
As for less matchup specifics, you are defensive, but you apparently don’t know how to start any offense. You’re right you shouldn’t be jumping all the time, but there are times where you can jump, you just need to earn them. Your defense needs to be tighter. Work on teching throws.
Hey thanks. Yeah EX scissors I know is unsafe, but on those occasions I thought could have caught him with a whiffed poke. What do you think is the best way to start an offence? I could dash in and pressure him with a blockstring/grab but I don’t know I tend to get caught by something on the way in. I guess I’m picking the wrong opportunities to dash in.
Yeah, but it’s not really worth it because you get 140 damage and a brief knockdown if you win, but Vega can punish you with cr.mp, cr.mk xx EX wall dive if you guess wrong. Also he wasn’t really whiffing too many moves to suggest that you should just random reversal.
Vega is a bit tough since he outranges Bison, and his pokes will usually stuff lk scissors, which is how Bison regularly scores a kd. There were times where he wasn’t doing much of anything, so you could’ve see how he would’ve reacted to getting chipped with 1-hit mk scissors. If he starts neutral jumping or focusing in response, you can start jumping in on him when he’s about to land to gain some momentum or use ex-pc/hk scissors to break focus. If he’s not reliable about canceling his cr.mp, you can try focus dashing in. If he is reliable about buffering walldive, then you know he’s given up his charge everytime he does cr.mp. You can start walking into range and just blocking to punish his buffered wall dive.
The important part is to be willing to try different things to bait your opponent into commiting to something, and capitalizing on it as much as possible. You want to test your opponent. Holding ub or db is safe, but it doesn’t let you figure out how your opponent responds to your actions.

A lot better, imo. A few things:
-Against cody there’s no real reason to focus bait from 3/4ths screen. Cody can’t reach that range except with his focus breakers or his rocks.
-Cody is free on wakeup, so you can meaty short or jab against him all day, and he can’t do much about it.
-Don’t use ex-pc to get out of pressure or the corner when he has U2 stocked. He can punish it, even though your opponent didn’t
-Go for bigger punishes when you land your crossup or hit confirms. You don’t always have to go for jab jab short scissors.
-DR sucks. It can be focus punished easily, but if you’re getting away with it, then more power to you
-I don’t think I saw a teched throw the entire match.

eg, ppp warp, u2, ect. Was trying to be safe because connection input was kinda questionable on my side that round, was dropping stuff, offline though what should I have done. That was chip fail on my part after I blocked it, lol. its cool i had fun next round >.>
You could’ve used forward ppp teleport, U2, or EX headstomp to punish, EX DR to escape. Reversal U2 was the best option, though.
