I run L+H and M+H to help my airdash appraoches with nova j.L and doom j.M respectively. I’d really appreciate it if you mention that configuration (if you feel it’s relevant).
Any tips on landing the crumple punch after the ground bounce? I always get to the mmhs>ground bounce>spencer assist>launcher and screw up. Also, anything on the Hulk MU? I got steamrolled by a local Hulk player and I now have a phobia of pressing buttons against Hulk.
Haha that’s gotta be the most-asked Nova question ever. I thought we had a thread detailing the whole thing, but… In general you wanna make sure your launcher hits first and the grapple second (it needs to do that in order to restand the opponent). 5H after 6H is easier to time at first but doesn’t give you enough time to combo after the hard tag with some characters, still I recommend trying that first to eye what kind of timing you’re looking for. Then start practicing with S.
Luckily you’re playing probably the best Nova team to fight Hulk (assuming Strange or at least Doom as your third), it just sounds like you need to learn the basics of the matchup. Depends a lot on the team though… Are they running KBR or something else?
the crumple combo is: f.H slight delay Spencer, S xx TK H Nova Strike.
As for the Hulk MU, I have a little experience with it…honestly, it’s a highly spacing and assist dependent match IMO. Never going in until you are 100000% sure you are covered. Nova can move a shit ton more than Hulk so take advantage of all your movement options. Just make sure to not stay below him. Can’t guarantee you can land in 1 piece at that point.
He’s running Hulk/Wesker/Phoenix
Lol. He’s wack. That team says it all.
That team should never touch you…Hulk can’t even safely Gamma Charge.
Get your movement down, snap in Phoenix on reaction to anything Hulk does bc he lacks a neutral assist and snaps beat armor, kill her, kill Wesker on incoming, plinkdash away from anchor Hulk all day and laugh
You can also always do standing H instead of S TK RP. Pretty small damage loss but a much easier timing/input.
I play a lot of hulks online. I used to be afraid of it; now I’m not. Especially if he’s hesitant to burn meter. Here are some tips:
- Only ever go in behind an assist call. H blows up everything, but if you have Doom beam or Bolts, you can rush him down then get back out again if your mixup fails
- Learn to move as fast as possible in the air. Hulk’s movement is ass, and Nova has a fly and a few good airdashes.
- Hulk has one option to get past your charged shield - gamma wave. Just be careful - if you have 0 charge, he can power through the first hit with gamma charge, hit you, and the shield vanishes. Watch for that
Honestly, it’s all about careful assist calls and playing a Magneto-esque poking/in-out game. His team in particular seems really free as all hell.
Yeah, that team is riddled with holes and even if you play a team that can’t kill Hulk off a touch, you have no reason to not snap in Phoenix.
Extra advice from what’s been posted so far:
Look to anti air him when he jumps in, 5L will basically always win against him at max range, but don’t use 2M or 5H as they may lose to his j.S. As JoeBusta said you can play runaway against him for free as he has no tool to chase you at super jump height, and nothing to chase j.S on the way down if he’s close to you. Not sure what assist you have in back, but a multi-hitting beam like Doom’s will shut down his offense full-to-mid screen. Javelin and Shield sparingly as he can approach during their recovery. If you have red health Pulse L and M will blow up any armor and allow a combo usually.
So a nova I follow on facebook posted this:
1 Bar, two assists, team Marvelo, over 900k.
I’ve been trying to optimize my Nova/Doom/Vergil combos… I’m trying very hard to do the fly/unfly loops starting with H xxfly j.H xxunfly j.H H S… I really want to end up with S into vergil extension. Anyone have any ideas? Like, team Marvelo has some nice tricks with Strider’s assist, but I’m not sure how to work with what I have. Right now the best I can get is:
j.H MH fly j.H unfly j.H MHS j.H fly j.H unfly j.H jump j.H fly j.H unfly j.H HS s.Jump j.H grav pulse M super.
This lets me do the double super or super->TAC, and nets me about 591k before super, 900k if I land both supers. How can I optimize it further? (Also, Thanks Dougie; this is either based on your work or straight-up one of yours)
Yeah BloodyPicture made that. He made it in response to me responding to Marvelo. Go in the combo thread to see Marvelo’s response. It’s godlike.
Hey yall, not 100% sure if this should be in a teambuilding thread but whats your opinion on playing team xian mag, morrigan, doom but switching mag for nova does it still sound like a good team? is putting morrigan in and having doom on missiles too detrimental to nova’s general gameplan?
I know this has been asked a million times but I can’t figure this out. I’m playing Coach Steve and I’m trying to figure out the specifics in regards to hardtag to Doom.
In the corner doing the H unfly loop, I don’t even have to TK the rocket punch to hardtag Doom S. This works midscreen as well, but the H unfly combo is unreliable outside of IA J.L confirms. The problem I’m having is even doing a basic nova spencer crumple (whatever > S > jm jm jh fly ja jm jh js fh delay spencer S TKRocket Tag) doesn’t give doom enough time to pick up. Just doing a simple ( m H+spencer S rocket tag ) works midscreen with no TK, but if I try to take the combo in the air I can never get it to connect after. This causes a problem when I connect off plasma beam assist because sometimes I can’t juggle with jab long enough to let spencer assist call be ready, so I have to go in the air.
I know I’ve seen Steve do it midscreen without the unfly H loop somehow, so what am I missing? Am I right in feeling like the hardtag to Doom is more picky as to how you start it than hardtag Strange?
Nova with missiles ain’t terrible but yeah, not having a horizontal assist keeps him from playing the way he wants. Likewise Morrigan with PB instead of missiles is alright but definitely not optimal.
I think a good compromise is tenboss’ team, Morrigan/Nova/Strange. Nova/Bolts is already well-established, but Morribolts also has very good strengths and I think is maybe her best horizontal assist. This team also prefers Nova’s shield assist, which makes for some interesting synergy. Here’s a video of the team in action:
What’s stopping me from posting up frame data?
Nothing at all, go for it.
I would also like an explanation of this please!
I kinda understood the question, but then I got lost. What exactly is the question again?
So… My entire neutral game is basically box dash H + doom assist. Basically at any point if the enemy is a certain distance away I reflexively boxdash in, and try to mix up from there. It’s… kinda weak.
…How do I stop doing this? What should I be doing instead? I’m liking wavedash up->cr.M. I feel so vulnerable doing basically anything else because there’s not a fast, safe hitbox in the way, but at the same time this gets read and punished for free by people I play regularly. Any advice would be welcome, especially advice that recognizes that plink dashing is kinda not a thing I have down yet.
