If anything, you’re probably trying to do it too fast, it has quite a laid back rhythm to it.

where you air :h: fly :h: unfly :h: this thing is like frustratingly difficult (although this is really my first month play this game consistently and trying to learn viper as well as nova
Common problems that beginners have:
Instead of j:h:, unfly, they get Nova Strike :h:. That means your left and right hand are out of sync. Make sure you put in the :qcb: motion all the way before/at the same time as when you press the :s: for your unfly command. Turn on button display when you practice in training, and you’ll see.
While doing j:h:, fly, j:h:, unfly, the second j:h: whiffs. That means you’re simply not letting that j:h: connect. You’re canceling the move before it makes contact with the opponent. Make sure you calm down, and let the attack hit. It may not look like it, but that kick will hit, and when it does, then you should unfly.
Dang, I know there are other common problems, but I can’t think of any. Either way, the solution is always the same. Slow it down. Keep calm. And let Nova ride it out.
Also, make sure you’re positioned well if you’re doing it mid screen. May require for you to start as soon as you launch, be close, and delay a tad bit the last :h:
What the… I have been living in a nova cave for the last couple of weeks. I thought you can only do the H fly and unfly in the corner? I tried it midscreen before but my third H just whiffs.
Nope, it’s midscreen as well. There are certain corner variants, but the actual start for it is anywhere. If your H’s are whiffing it’s because you’re either canceling into fly too fast or you’re doing something else. Slow it down, find a rhythm, and you’ll get it.
I’m running. Nova/frank/Wesker I am having trouble leveling up frank after Novas hyper and tc him in…would someone like hawkeye or taskmaster be more beneficial to the team then good ol wesk?

how are you having trouble leveling up Frank after Super Nova? Just make sure you don’t let it go too far or you’ll get an air reset instead of the hard knockdown.
Also I’m not sure how good wesker is there. I mean he’s fine, but both Nova and Frank make really good use of horizontal projectiles to cover their approach so Hawkeye or Tasky work fine. I personally run Hawkeye and don’t think my team could improve much in terms of all-around synergy
Trying to perfect the fly/unfly loop and I have one question. Is there a secret to get the opponent to not get pushed so far away after the first jump H? When things fall into place I can do this combo easy but it just feels so inconsistent.
edit: actually its the second jump H that is pushing them too far away.
Don’t you feel like you’re lacking damage sometimes? Obviously the initial goal is to level up Frank, but i play the same team and sometimes regret the fact that i don’t have the option to OHKO off the first touch without X-Factor, also after Nova dies, even with LV.5 Frank, with only Hawkeyes weak DHC options it can still be pretty hard to OHKO high HP characters.
I’m not complaining, i think our team is super cheap, but i think there’s room for improvement, i think Nova/Frank/Sent would be a significantly better team for example. (But fuck playing Sent)
Honestly Frank backed up with nova assist bumps his damage to retarded amounts. My bnb builds 2.5 bars and with Survival Techniques dhc Super nova, it’s 1150 damage lol. Damage is the one thing I don’t really think is lacking on Frank/nova
I know Lv.5 Frank on point with Nova still available is big damage, but that’s only one (super best case scenario) situation. It still bugs me that i can’t kill anyone off the first touch of the match, and that Nova dying absolutely rips the heart out of the teams damage.
Oh well, still a good team either way.
Well I have a question of my own now: how can Nova deal with lame Dooms? I mean, those who superjump fly and spam Photon Shot. I’ve tried going for Energy Javelin but that thing has such poor tracking (in my experience, maybe I’m doing something wrong?) that it misses a lot. I feel like trying to go for the airgrab since I’m a big fan of those but I risk setting myself up for a footdive to the face and I don’t wanna spend my meter on Human Rockets or super jump Gravimetric Blaster because I’m saving those for level 5 Frank DHC. What do you people recommend me doing?
Also, non-nova specific question but still pertinent; what’s the start-up time on THCs before the flash? Is it all reduced to 1-frame? I mean, it feels like time stops but I’m not sure. This would be amazing since Gravimetric Blaster’s pre-flash start-up is so high but I’d like to make sure. Thanks in advance!
In this situation I wavedash on the ground between the shots, then either throw javelin right under him, or go for super jump air throw on a proton shot recovery. He is also limited to 3 non super shots, so you can wait those out and the inevitable foot dive that will follow and attempt to open him up as he lands. Not sure if this helps but it works for me.
And for this, THC’s have the start up time of whatever your point character’s hyper is while everyone else’s is reduced to 1 frame. Like if you were doing a THC with Magneto on point against someone with a THC with Thor on point, Magneto’s would win and you’d get like a triple birthday.
so if I had Nova/storm and I did a THC, Nova’s GB would have its regular start-up while Hail Storm would have a 2-frame start-up? (1+1) OP
Somethin’ like that, yeah. It’s why Doom/Ammy THC works so well together. Full screen near instant punish into mix-up/combo.
Couple things:
Nova/Frank shell can kill off the first touch and get level 4 if you TAC. Depending on how optimized your combo is, you can build two bars, and go all the way up to 1.15 mil depending on who your third is for DHCing. This comes with some risk obviously, but can be worth it depending how important killing the point is. You can also do FFC reset + level 4 if you have a bar left after the DHC and depending on your opponent. So there’s ways to do it, but as my local scene members repeatedly like to remind me, the inability to kill on the first touch is arguably the team’s biggest weakness.
Rocket Punch H can stuff doom photon shots if you space it properly. Also, he’s not the only one who can be lame; Super Jump Graivemtric L x2 Fly Gravimetric L x3 may not hit him, but it takes away his advantage.
THCing with hailstorm would be faster, but bear in mind gravimetric blaster is 20+1 if memory serves. Hailstorm is 29+1. Faster, but not Spencer 4+3 faster.

If i want go the route of trying to kill the point, i’ll just go for a Nova reset, i like my odds on that at least 33% and i don’t blow up momentum if they guess right.
Also, Blue Lightning, on the damage without Nova situation have you done any experimentation with Hawkeye/Frank THC? As a full screen punish, say after a blocked Maximum Wesker, the Gimlet hits and then Frank continues with Cart for the wallbounce and you can do dash, slide, launch into a full Hawkeye BnB, which is pretty sick, but i’m wondering if its worth using in combos.
For example, if you do the super basic Launch LMHS, OTG Ice arrow combo with Hawkeye, after the bounce you can do slide xx THC and get the wallbounce, but i can’t get a lot to follow up after, net arrow pops out immediately and another launch only allows for H,S at best. I need to try it just using the THC to OTG instead of the Ice Arrow, but i’m not sure if the Gimlet would whiff before Cart OTGs and ran out of time to test today.

Hey guys. I have been trying for years to make a team with Frank and Ammy. They’re just too good together. So, I used to have Ammy/Frank/Deadpool, which was great, but I’m not a huge fan of a fragile point character, though Ammy works surprisingly well with the cart. I also tried Skrull and Tron with Frank. Both work fantastically, but I just can’t move with them. So, I put on Nova, and I do love the synergy. I’ve seen a lot of him, and he looks soopafine, and I have not been disappointed yet. But, I’m new. Like, crazy new.
Unfortunately, my Nova is 3 hours old. Most of it training mode, but then I tried the team on my online sparring buddies once. Currently I’ve figured out the really easy Cr.MH, S, Air. MMHS, 6H, S, Air. H, QCF L, DP hyper into frank. I also have found that air dashing straight forward is a really obvious mixup, but it’s relatively high priority, and with shopping cart or Ammy, it may reduce, but suddenly there’s an assist crossing up, and I’ve managed to open some good blockers like that. I almost have the rocket punch corner loop, which does some fun damage, but that’s it. Like, I have nothing else at all with him.
So, to guide the direction of my training mode work, I have a few simple questions.
- What on earth does Nova have in regards to incoming crossups/mixups? I’m used to guys like X-23 and Dormammu, so this incoming game seems a bit bland to me. I’m thinking there’s something with the javelin, but would anyone like to enlighten me on some setups/guard breaks?
- As far as safety on Nova hitconfirms, I read a bit more of this thread. So, it seems S.M is the best for frame safety, yet I might just end it with Crouching H anyway, because I don’t trust myself to hitconfirm well with a new character. But, is Grav. Pulse H a good idea to use occasionally? I read here that it’s safe, yet the startup seems pretty vulnerable. And another safety route, is flight cancelling the Cr. H a good idea? I’m not sure how to follow it and make it all combo, if it works at all, but if someone has a ground to flight to launcher sequence, my combos are small enough that it probly won’t screw up the hitstun, and it may give me a bit more mixupyness for opening shit up.
- I want to learn the Nova swag TAC combo, it looks like fun, and surprisingly doable. But, with Frank as the next guy on the team, is it even worth it? Frank does WAY too much damage with cold star and Nova’s overhead in combos, and all of Frank’s combos would have to be cut really short to make it work, I feel. Anyone of the many Nova/Franks in here find the TAC combo useful, or does double tools of survival M combos into DHC outclass it?
