"Not fat enough? We can fix that!" Rufus Match-up Thread

i cant confirm this since im at work but can someone tell me if blocked hp tornado on bison is NOT safe?

i kept eating low fowards into scissor kicks last night

What’s the best way to capitalize on a knocked down blanka? He’s got such good wakeup options.

Blocked tornado is -1. So its safe from everything, as long as you don’t stick something out after.

I’m having problems facing Sagat players who only stay back and throw fireballs, then when I jump in they nail me with a f+HK or standing HK.

I faced this one Sagat player who only did that and it was driving me nuts!

I even timed his dive kick after I jumped a fireball so I can land safely, and his goddamn HK still hit me!!!

Cr.fp high tigers or tornado to nullify
For low tigers I either triangle hop’em or mp strikes

Most sagats panic if you get close and you can try mixups after an ex Jesus kick

I find sagat fights fun. It’s like fighting bowser in mario bros

Jump fierce punch beats f+HK most of the time unless they do it really early.

Sagat is one of the few characters for whom cross up MK is very viable. Its the best wake up against Sagat, and better than jumping in with dive kicks if you can get the right distance (around 1.25 character space away).

justingroton and I played last night and experimented with different things.

First, Blanka.

Tornado beats Blanka Balls and electricity but you have to treat it like a fireball. Only the when the tornado actually hits does it beat them.

Cr.MP beats out any Rainbow Roll, whether it be a cross up or a regular one.

Second, Balrog

Ex Tornado beats Ultra if he is far enough away.

Cr.HP beats out a long rushing punch. (I need to check if it works with TAP)

I prolly forgot some, so hopefully justingroton will come in and input some more info.

P.S. GG last night justingroton.

yes, GGs last night, sorry I didn’t get back on. My roommate was on the xbox.

Against Balrog, if they try to move in with Buffalo Headbutts, you can jump roundhouse them. the timing is very strict, so whoever tries has to mess with it.

Guile is always at a disadvantage after a blocked flash kick, so you can take advantage of that.

a few of my good/bad observations from playing these past two some weeks that I don’t think’s been said:

  • j. verticatl rk makes for decent 3rd string air to air(or anti-air.). loses to those early j.rk’s tho. I like it better than j. vertical hp. range and placement of hitboxes just looks better

-jump back j.mp takes care of 60% of claw shennanigans

-win paragraphs are amusing

as for my issues(i thought i’d have alot more good things to say, but i guess the nuances of playing overtake my thoughts of the unsaid good things):

-how do I deal with a vega who does that retreating flip bullshit?

-blanka balls… tho this’s being discussed already

-gief’s larriets beat mid EX messiah kicks -_-,
-is it possible to punish wiffed larriet from 1-1.5 character’s distance?

-best method to punish sagat’s wiffed s.rk from 1-1.5 character’s distance?(w.out meter)?

-i get dp’d out of glory kick(blocked)->throw? -_-,

Walk forward a bit. Far stand Fierce.

Standing Far Strong. Maybe jab too… Which can be linked to strong.

If you’re getting dp’ed out of the glory kick, you’re being too predictable. If you’re being dped after the glory kick, either block or back dash.

One thing i like to do if I’m forced to guess between a DP or a throw in a reversal situation, is to wait 1/4 second, then crouch tech (db+LP+LK). If they tried to reversal DP, I would’ve blocked it. If they tried to throw, there’s a good chance I would tech it. If they didn’t do anything, I would’ve crouch shorted them.

nobody plays Vega, so I can’t help you with him too much. (I’ll do some experimenting this week.)

Blanka Balls, as stated; if you think they’re coming, starting hitting medium punch, or tornado. there is strict timing with both. cr.mp beats blanka’s rainbow ball clean.

Don’t waste EX Meter on Gief. save every bit of meter for big openings like blocked green fist and such. I’m guessing if he whiffs a lariat, you could do heavy tornado; it has some good distance. also cr. fierce works.
try a fast roll -> tornado, or roll -> cr.lk -> s.hp->hp tornado. I am just guessing those might work, but sagat’s like to mash out uppercuts, so I can’t confirm it.

well EX meter is necessary for only two things. bait jump so you can ex snake hands, and of course ex jesus kick. you should obviously never be doing ex jesus kick midscreen anyway as lariat does beat it, but if you just outside of block range, its fine. at midscreen whiffed lariat you can distance yourself and safely punish with cr fierce. i dont really reccomend tornado in this matchup at all unless you get a free opening or if you catch gief mid lariat with cr short/medium xx ex tornado

c.fierce has to be properly spaced against larriet(i give up on spelling). i’ve been hit out of it many a time.

I just time c.fierce to hit right when the lariat is ending (on what little recovery it has). I think if you do it that way the spacing isn’t as important.

you can punish it with a throw. just dive-> if he backflip you can safely throw it.
One thing though, you need to see if it’s the long or short version. If he does the long version just walk up with vega and throw him in the end of the flip.

I don’t get it, but E. Honda gives me such a hard time. Anybody have some crap on him?

MoxManiac is 100% right. Adding to that: you need to be able to recognise whether he’s doing a punch or kick lariat, since the kick ends much faster. There are both visual and audio cues for that.

There’s a discussion early on in this thread about that.

About Vega.

I had a Vega try and roll against me and during his incredibly long start up I did Ultra. The Ultra beat it clean.

I hate turtles.

If Rufus only had a projectile. hahah

… would buy a popcorn fireball as DLC
