"Not fat enough? We can fix that!" Rufus Match-up Thread

okay thanks, i’ll read this through again and keeping it in mind. ive played hondas now and then, and good hondas also. i remember its quite hard getting in closer. and is repeatadly divekicks really good? i remember the hondas i were playing revearsed it with headbut or stomp or whatever it was, cant recall 100%
but yeah, going for the meaty divekick/launcher tactic i’ll do alot more vs. honda. i do that alot vs. Sagat (which is, when you’ve got a hold of it) just AWSOME imo… i love it… but i’ll start doing it vs. Honda also! great 8)

and yeah Sharin, that tactic Kirisuto is doing it defenietly worth doing, esp. vs. Sagat! and its also quite good vs. Zangief aswell (not to often tho)

If the honda player, is just holding down+back, just walk forward, literally. Anyway you can close space with rufus is a good way. The key to doing dive kicks on honda is to make sure you hit above where his head drops down for a headbutt, because if you dive kick too low, honda can EX headbutt you out. That’s why you gotta try to make it a cross up dive kick, however this is tough to do unless you get a knockdown. Generally, I just play patient waiting for the honda to throw out a careless headbutt or buttslam and punish whatever way I can.

I reccommend always going for the focus attack, because if you get crossed up you can just back dash and block the next buttslam, and if it doesnt cross u up just let go of the FA as soon as u get hit. If it crumples u get a free combo, or u can just backdash and sweep to be safe, then do meaty cross up dive kicks all day, game, set, match. If it doesnt crumple you can backdash anyway, and the honda might try a psychic headbutt or something. The startup of EX messiah beats all of hondas headbutts just an fyi if you didnt know.

Hi, i’m new here. Tonight i got to play a local’s tournament final match against a balrog player… of course i main rufus.

What should I look out for?
Is dive kick a good option?
Should i use cr.HP? or is it easily punished?
What mistakes can I punish with st.HP->Fierce tornado ?
etc, etc

I have no experience in this matchup

hey guys a question about the viper match up, after scoring a knockdown which DK is more effective, the cross up or a regular short one, I seem to be getting mixed results with both, cause in the cross up DK i just tend to wiff my follow up into combos and eat a punish and in the short ones i sometimes hit and land a juicy combo but other times i get reversaled with her “DP”, I know not become predictable is key with these mix ups but i just want to know which one is generally the most effective

cross up dive kick works pretty well on balrog, regular short ones don’t really work cause he has a weird hit box,

Pretty sure a blocked/whiffed Headbutt can be punished with HP-HP Tornado. Be careful with C.HP, as that’s easily punished by Rog. Be very, VERY careful with divekicks in front: A good Rog is always ready with a headbutt into Ultra. On knockdown, though, crossup divekicks work well.

… But that’s all at the very front of the thread, isn’t it?

I’m a little nervous about this match… and yes, i’ve noticed that the dive kick when done up close whiffs every time, every time.

Further advice is welcome :stuck_out_tongue:

Another thing… baiting strategies against balrog?

And anooother thing… in the first posts says “Tri Jumps whiff.” Tri jumps? divekicks?

dont forget that Balrog can be crossed up with j.mk as well. Is he tries to reset you with the overhead dash punch, be ready with an EX messiah/throw

Actually i never found the j.MK crossup much useful, to say the least but i’ll keep that in mind

Oooookk, i lost  lol

I’ll post the fight later

ok what is the problem here is it balrog(boxer)?

you have to focus on spacing and angles in this match up use your ground tools as an illusion to give time to your dive kicks let me give example

remember these key tools they are df mk, cr hk, st far hk, focus dash throw or ex messiah, angled dive kicks, ex tornado scarcely

so when you mix these up it will look something like you walking up, spacing then see how he reacts good rog player will st lp a lt with occasional cr or st hk and jump back fierce against high dive kicks to overcome this you want to sweep and footsie his st lp or ex tornado them for an easy punish when he stops doing this you can quick dive kick not too low not too high then get inside for pressure

during pressure it is key to know your rock paper scissors and your frame adv against his lp and ex headbutt and jump away

to counter lp from rog simply land a nice deep dive kick then cl hp into tornado you will get the counter hit combo and it is beefy also remember not to ultra too soon wait for yourself to get a 60% ultra or more even if you only have 10% health left stay calm land 2 mixups then ultra when he will be at 10% like you after it is done thats how you make an even game

against ex headbutt you can easily avoid it most just use it to get away but most of the time you will go over safely for ex rush punches just grab them but the key here is to be landing nice and deep dive kicks to set all of these up remember to throw after them too

main mixups are these against lp and ex headbutt rog i will list and assume you can figure out the purpose

after landed deep dive kick -

  • hp into tornado

  • low dive kick (not vs lp spam tho)

  • throw (use vs lp spam + ex)

  • lk lk into target combo

  • ex messiah vs his reversals to fish

  • close lk into low lp xx ex tornado on hit or hp tornado on block. space tornado out of his lp range

  • crouch lk into lp tornado if they hold upback

How do you fight chun li? i get spaced out with fireballs try to get in and i get hit with fierce. should i walk up slow, roll? what are the best pokes to use?

Against anyone who spaces you out with fireballs but lacks a shoryu move, there are a few ways to get in to them. Vary the way you dodge fireballs: Focus-dashing and MP snakestriking outside of sweep range. If they’re antiairing you with normals, a delayed divekick often works well. Failing that, just keep pushing them into the corner, where you control the spacing, and you can EX snakestrike any jump attempts. Once you’re in on Chun Li, she’s pretty much done for.

J.HP is a good one to mix in now and then, too. Make them forget that you have it and be afraid of delayed divekicks, and you can catch them by surprise.

thanks man, once im in should i go into the mixup game and watch out for ex sbk?

When I’m pressuring a knocked down Chun and she has meter, I always dive kick, cross up or not, over the reach of the SBK. It’s almost guaranteed she’ll bust it out. If done correctly she’ll get reset, and bam, you’re right in her face.

Also, If she’s blocking a jesus kick and has meter, go for the overhead. What’s she gonna do?

if someone can explain this to me, it would be much appreciated:

I have always incorporated cross up dive kicks with Rufus. However, today I ran into a Ken that always F. DP out of my next move (s. lk) after getting hit with dive kicks.

It wasn’t a flowchart ken player, but I just had the feeling he mashes the hell out of DP during the hit animation.

Basically, I launch my dive kicks near the apex of Rufus’ jump. Should I use it more closer to the ground? Or is there something about Ken’s start-up frames that was stuffing my next move after dive kick?

This could help you

That, and if he’s ALWAYS hitting the fierce Shoryu after your divekicks, then that’s easy… You simply block, and punish him as he lands with a HP-fierce GT combo, target combo into Ultra, or (near the corner) HP-fierce GT-Ultra.

Or, just to out-shenanigan him, you could land right into an EX Messiah. Should get all hits if he tries DP-ing.

Of course, once he learns not to do it every time and tries a throw or something, then every too-high-hitting divekick becomes a guessing game that’s in his favor if you haven’t got meter (DP beats out attack and throw attempts, throw beats block), and in your favor if you’ve got meter (EX Messiah beats anything he does except block).

i have problems fighting chun lis as well, well the ones who outzone and outpoke me

her pokes are so damn good, i can barely get in

Chun li is tough cause her pokes are really good. I’ve fought a good number of chuns and the only advice i can really give is be patient. Yes she has good pokes, but her s.fp and c.hk have pretty slow recovery times if she throws them out incorrectly. Once u get within her poking range do some neutral jumps to bait out a miss timed poke. Or fish for a poorly thrown poke with an EX messiah or EX GT. The EX messiah is definitley better since she lands closer to u, but if u want the extra damage EX GT works too. Once shes on the ground its over.
