Yeah…they have a weird tendancy to keep to them selves…but…like I said, If I can get Eggz, Ka-Masta,GimpyFish and Hero/Reggie (Best Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Young Link players respectivly. All of which are ranked state and nationally) to agree to come, I know like 90% of the scene would make a show.
And since Eggz, Ka-Masta, Gimpyfish and Hero are nationaly known, other people from other states might show up…maybe not right off the bat, but eventually. Mainly because Smash, like Guiltygear has a very tight and nit group, they all communicate with eachother and stay incontact of eachother.
But again, what are we trying to DO with this event? All the enthusiasm in the world won’t make up for a lack of identity or focus. Are we trying to convert Smash players to Capcom games, or vice versa? Given the current makeup of both scenes, neither is likely to happen on a large scale. This isn’t a question of Smash’s viability as a tourney game. It’s a question of what the 2d community wants, and they don’t want Smash. Seems like you’re still thinking about this event as a major like Evo, but we don’t have the resources needed to do something on a comparative scale.
We don’t even know if the Northwest scene is still capable of making a regional tournament worthwhile. For Christ’s sake, I’ve seen posts discussing a 16 man bracket as a good turnout for the CORE games. The least popular games at NWR still had 20~25, and that’s still everybody’s standard for a large event. Right now, we’re talking about a tourney that’s 2 days max, in one ballroom. From a logistical standpoint, adding Smash isn’t a great idea because it’ll take a long time and attracts a ton of people. I run single-elim Smash tourneys every year with 32 screens and capped at 128 players, and they still take a long time.
bottom line here is we need to start small, we aren’t about to have an evo 2.0 up here, definately not within the next year. Let’s just start out with trying to get an evo qualifier up here first. If we have a good turnout and people enjoy themselves then we can try to keep it as an annual thing. But it seems like a lot of people in here are trying to bite off more than they can chew. NWR imo was ran pretty well, and a lot of people had a blast, and as far as games go. ST 3S CvS2 MvC2 T5 DR, for now maybe try to add more in next time around.
Of course it’s not Evo 2.0. Still, we wanna try and start big. Even if there isn’t an optimal turnout, a well-organized and impressive tourney will make those who went tell everyone how great it was, which piques interest and gives incentive to keep a scene going. Optimism helps, people. I don’t want to hear any more cynicism; it’s detrimental to the goal we have set out- a NW Major.
Smash should not even be considered. At this point our goal should be to garner as much support for 2d fighters and give the NW crowd something to look forward to. As Rob has already said multiple times, Smash already has a scene. We need to focus on OUR scene. Who gives a crap if they can get a group 5x bigger than the ours? They don’t need us and we don’t want them, it is as simple as that.
We’ve been having the “ranbats” at Preppy’s for a long time, and this isn’t rushing it. We’re talking about 3 months advance warning/planning time. You think we can’t plan a major in three months? We must be lazy…
Even though they’re different, I’m saying we already have a small tournament scene going. We have dedicated players and organizers, and all it takes is a bit of hard work and we can have a major by this winter!
it’s going to be better to start out small and have a smooth running, great experience than to try to shoot for the fences and have people just talk shit about how awful things turn out. Thus completely ruining our chances to even move on to the next step of having our own qualifier let alone something like ECC or evo. But if you guys want to take that chance then go right the fuck ahead. I’ll keep my mouth and opinions out of it.
You have high hopes, Jamie. Let me keep it real right here…
Your not getting a major by this winter. This is merely an idea.
Your correct also on the tournament scene thing, let’s work off that and not push anything way too fast because we might overlook something or did something to fast to fuck everything up…
We don’t want everything that we (or I mean the community) worked so hard for to end up crumbling before us…that would be way too many disappointed/pissed off gamers to deal with…it’s not a small group when it’s a WHOLE FUCKIN REGION wanting your dome piece.
So right now small is good until everything get’s more organized and situated.
That’s what I think anyway.
This whole entire thread needs a mothafuckin hug! real deal.
