Northwest Majors: June 28th at UW

PDX and WA Collabo!

why don’t we all just move to cali >.>

Let’s get right on that -_-

Mind saying what exactly the feedback given said? Just curious here.

If you read back a page or so in this thread, you can find some of it. It is tough to please everyone and I wanted to get the poll up soon, so I went with what feedback I was hearing and what I thought was best.

There is actually a thread up about this now where people can discuss game choices. This is the place to post about it.

Northwest Majors Game Discussion Thread

i can help you out if you need UW students for the club, i think u need mandatory 5 officers to make a club?

i want this to happen!

If you want to sign up as an officer, that would be great.

Hi BrentoBox.
Add me to the list of supporters for Melty Blood.
As for Deezo’s comments, I think he said that just because he knows I like the game, hehe.
Besides players from Portland, there are some other NW guys with interest in Melty… I can ask them to post in the thread if you like.

Other than that, I just wanted to say, choosing games seems like it’ll be pretty tough. I think Marvel and CvS2 should be included for certain… even if the cvs2 scene has been dead for a while, back when we still held tournaments at Lanwerx it always had a good turnout. 3S became more popular at some point so I’m assuming it’s going to get a lot of votes as well.

Edit: Forgot to mention, concerning Portland’s “Random Select” turnout for various games, I don’t think it’s a good representation of what the actual scene is like over here. So regardless of the turnout for guilty gear and/or melty blood, I think it’s important to place more weight on the kind of feedback you get from the community.

Hey Veteru,

Thanks for the comments. There is actually a thread for discussing game choices called Northwest Majors Game Discussion Thread. If you don’t mind reposting this there and then deleting the one here, I will get back to you. There is a strict no game choice discussion rule about this thread, which is why the other was made.

Aye, sorry about that. Doing.

Awesome.

ALRIGHT! Shit is really starting to happen!:bgrin:

The UW Marvel club is going to be an reality within a couple of days which changes a lot of things in some great ways!

I have a tenative reservation set for the Pacific Northwest Majors on the 24th of May in the Walker Ames Room in Kane Hall, overlooking Red Square. I reserved it a week ago, but since I didn’t know if the club would happen I didn’t want to say anything. It is tenative so I can cancel it no problem within a week, but after that it we have to reserve it or lose the hold. I think this is probably the best place we could hold it.

It can hold 200 people, is really easy to find, we would have unlimited tables, chairs, a few couches (which we could put in the storage if we needed more space), a room sound system with microphone (free of charge), and generally it is the best possible place to hold an event at the UW, as it overlooks Red Square and has baloconies on both sides.

The cost is 50 dollars an hour with a 15% overhead charge. There would usually be an additional 300$ charge for an operator, but since I work there, I would take care of everything and it would be waved. Since we would be reserving it through the newly established Marvel Club, the cost is only 50$ per hour, instead of 100.

So assuming our event went for 10 hours, it would cost 600$. That may seem like a lot, but we have three months to raise the money, or at least raise as much as we can so can really reduce an out of pocket expense.

I am looking into school funding, but I don’t think we should consider it as a real alternative, because their are a lot of requirements that it looks like we may not meet. I am trying though, and I am going to meet with an RSO person sometime next week.

So what are everyones opinions?!?! I have looked at a lot of places around Seattle, and no place I found had this size and caliber a room, this great a location, the amenities to supply us with as many tables as we could need, chairs, funiture, and a sound system. They also have full availability thoughout May and June, and charge by the hour (all other places were mostly a flat rate above 1000 dollars and couldn’t have us from morning to late night.)

I know 600$ or 700$-(if we went from 12am to 12pm) seems like a lot, but that is where the work part comes in. There are a lot of ways to raise money and advertise at the same time and we have three months to do it in! That is a long time!

I think we should reserve and start working right away. Post up your opinions!

May 24th is two weeks before finals and graduation and after midterms for UW so it sits right in that nice spot where people should be able to attend. I have to check with the Portland guys, but I think this should be great!

Edit- We also get free laminating of posters and some other material since it is an event on campus. So another bonus.

yes :woot:

I’m pretty confident that would speed everything up a noticeable amount. This all sounds gravy to me, nice work Brent. For curiosity’s sake, do you know the area of the room?

Is the Walker Ames room really that big? I went to an even there once and it was pretty crowded with only 100 people. Adding in playing areas would only worsen it.

Is it not possible to get the HUB Ballroom? Console Freeplay held an event in there last year, and it was nice and big. Plus, there’s two HUGE screens that you can project onto for the bigger games.

Not Possible. I have been checking around for awhile. HUB ballroom is completely booked out and anytime after school ends comes with a 500$ building opening fee.

The south campus center is the only other area that I still have to look at and that I think may be a possiblity. Can’t say for sure though.

Walker ames should work fine. Thanks for getting shit rolling Brentz.

Brent, I dunno if I’ve thanked you already, but thanks for all the hard work you’re doing man. I really really appreciate it. It may not mean much coming from me but I’m serious. I hope everyone else appreciates what you’ve been doing for us. That’s seriously great news. I think for an event of this magnitude, that if a lot of people show up for Marvel, that if I’m running it, I won’t enter it. Just so I can minimize as much time away from running it as I can. Did the people who ran Random Select play in tourneys as well? I can’t even remember if Zach actually entered the Marvel tourney at NWR years ago.

Yo Mandel,

Man, a thank you coming from you means a lot more than it would coming from a whole lot of people. There is still a lot to work out, and we are going to need a lot of guys who we can trust to run this tourney, so I think you should be able to enter a tourney even if you are helping out… Thanks for all the support.

And just for the record, you did say it before and you were the first one, so thanks again. I am enjoying setting it up too, so it isn’t like a chore or anything.

Here are some pictures of the Walker Ames room.

Those couches and plants can be moved out of or around the room (and probably will be) to make more room for tables. Click again on the picture when it comes up to get it fullscreen.

And here are the room specs if anyone wants to check them out.

http://www.css.washington.edu/KNE_225

There are also two outside balconies that are pretty great but aren’t shown.

I know it isn’t as big as a ballroom, but I think it should still work fine.

No, we can’t move or play the organ.:razzy:

Edit- This picture is taken from the top of Kane Hall, so it is about 40 feet higher than our room, but this is close to the general view we have from our room on the second floor. Just icing on the cake and it looks even better at night.

So here is what we have decided so far and all of the information.

Name- Pacific Northwest Majors
Date- Saturday May 24th, 12pm to 10pm (or midnight)
Location- Walker Ames Room, Kane Hall at UW. Cost is 50$ per hour. Check the post above for pictures.

There hasn’t been a lot of discussion over things like names, so that can still change if anyone has any other ideas, but they have to come up soon. I also haven’t heard much feedback on the room choice, but unless someone comes up with something amazing, I think it is a pretty great place to hold it.

I chose May 24th because it is three months away, two weeks before finals at UW, and after midterms so that means a lot of people should be free, and it is a month before the RS Summer Showdown. Also not likely to be during Evo West, although that date is not confirmed as I found out tonight. I don’t how that works for everyone else, but with three months out, I think everyone can make sure to be free that day. If there are any glaring reasons that I am missing why that date won’t work, post up and let me know.

So with this much decided, we can actually start to work on this and make it happen!

Here is a to do list that I have drawn up. It is all the stuff that I could think of right now.

To do list- We have three months between now and the tournament to work on it.

  • Get a logo designed
  • Set-up Website with Possible Pre-Registration
  • Advertise
  • Raise Funds
  • Figure out what equipment is needed and where or who we are getting it from
  • Decide on payout for tournament winners
  • Finalize Games
  • Decide on Tourney Brackets

I am going to post up a list soon with timelines of when things need to get done and ask people what they want to help out with or if they would like to be in charge of a particular area.
