ok, we are adding an SNK game to this mix…just gotta figure out which one and see if people will play it.
Is NWR2 finally about to happen? =]
It very well could be.
Both CvS2 and 3S are worth having. CvS2 will draw in locals, while 3S attracts Portland and BC. So the core games should be Marvel, ST, CvS2, and 3S.
After that, the choices get harder. The only 3D game with a scene is DR and that’s in big decline at the moment. Besides, this wouldn’t happen until T6 is out in arcades but not console, so it’s probably not practical.
Guilty Gear would be a good choice on the 2D side. The Redmond scene is still going strong and it could attract some people from Portland and BC. Plus AC is coming out in the US this fall on PS2, so that automatically solves any potential issue with hardware.
SNK…I dunno. My first response is “no”, but there are still a fair number of SNK fans throughout the Northwest and a few of the Capcom players could be interested as well. If the local SNK scene can get organized, that’s probably enough for at least a 16-man tourney.
Adding AC and an SNK game would give us a pretty solid lineup, but the biggest concern is venue. Simply put: we don’t really have one. I know we’d all love to have another major, but the scene isn’t the same as it was back during NWR. Lanwerx is long gone. Zach’s house could work in theory, but can the neighborhood physically support that many people? Is Zach even willing to host a major?
No offense to Canada, but I think Vancouver is out of the question. Last I checked they don’t really have a serious arcade left, and we’ve been out of touch with the BC scene for years. Portland still has an arcade, but does everybody wanna drive there? At this point there might be no other choice. Another option is renting out a room somewhere, and that can get expensive. Since Hellsap can get rooms for free, Portland looks like our best option at the moment.
I dunno, it’s tough. I know everybody wants another NW major, I’m just not sure if it’s practical.
how about GGXX:AC?
Last night I saw Yosuke playing Third Strike and ST lol. So one guaranteed Japanese player there lol I guess.
Yosuke also plays KOF98, KOF2002, and of course his main game VF5. These will probably end up as side tournaments at best though, I like all the planning going on, you NW guys are a really tight knit group.
I’m not really trying to start shit here, but I’ve seen a few mentions of a 16 person bracket… is that really enough people to constitute a “Major” tournament? Thats like a weekly tournament size, so should we really be concerned about having a “Major” for a game that can only get 16 people to enter?
Maybe I’m thinking that the thought behind this is bigger than everyone else, but I dunno. Personally I’d say Marvel/3s/CvS2/ST and thats about it. I’d love to see a 3D game in there, but I don’t really see any scenes strong enough to warrant a Major for.
Also, I don’t think people should be even mentioning Zachs house for something this big. That’s asking for far too much, and while its a decent size house, theres no way a house could… well house something like this
i think they were talking about breaking it down to 16 man brackets like pools ya know?
Well yeah totally, I guess my point basically boils down into, if you’re not getting like 25-30+ people to enter, why bother having it at a major?
It’s still early though to build those scenes up
dude, i’m the best japanese 3s player in pdx.
^people play all that wierd shit in seattle, but when it comes down to actually playing something on a high level its only marvel. everything thing is half ass.
I think it should be Marvel/3s/ST/CvS2 and nothing more
no SNK or GG, those are all games that have a small (if any) competitive scene around here, and I don’t think they would attract enough people to be worth having
So for ST, we should decide what version to use. If we are using console, that. CCC2 is a piece of garbage. I heard Gian say they like the PS1 version. Is the xbox HD version coming out soon? If so we should use that
They only like the ps1 version cause it’s the one they have had forever. The ps2 version is hella glitchy, but I think if we just regulate it strongly, and play on whatever speed it was you said was closest to arcade we might be okay sticking with ccc2. I mean some of the crazy glitches in the ps1 like guile getting his cps1 chain is hella random. Or the characters being weird sizes or bisons pyscho crusher not going full screen. But we can totally do this at psu. For free, the collecting money thing might need to be worked out, but we’d be glad to do it.
We cannot ever return to CCC2, please don’t even think about it
I posted in the other thread about the possibility of using HSF2 with only ST characters
trust me, it feels better than CCC2 by a TON
edit: arcade is a problem, because then you have to have machines with sticks that cater to everyone’s tastes, and that just isn’t feasible
CvS2 is a must !!! That way more out of staters will come…Throw down CvS2 and me and hella folks from Kali will slide through.

As I already said in the other thread, there already is a perfect solution if we play on superguns for ST.
For people that dont know what a SG is, it converts the RGB from arcade boards to something a TV can display, and they can have PS2 ports so everyone could hook up their own stick, and play arcade perfect ST with the actual arcade boards comfortably.
You can build them for around 200 or so, premade 300 plus…Im pretty certain I could build one but Im severely lacking in duckets, maybe a raffle or something, I could donate some game stuff…
I’m not sure if superguns are the answer. When we run ST tournaments one a single console with 12 or so players, it already takes 2+ hours. If you’re seriously looking to hold a major event, you should have 5+ screens running. With that in mind, I’m sure we don’t have access to 5+ ST boards. Also, do superguns take PSX inputs? Because that’s what most people’s arcade sticks are gonna be.
You can make them take whatever input you want…
Between Umbrella, myself, and Preppy, we have 3 ST boards! I’m sure others have some too
