I know no one else is for it, but I am still really behind including Brawl. It is a new game and SSB is huge on the UW campus, so it would attract a lot of local people for the tourney. I think a lot of crossover is good for the tournament.
It is even possible that we wouldn’t have to do much to include it because we could work with the people in the smash community on campus to have them organize their part.
As much I hate Smash (HATE), it could work. However, I would much rather have say, Melty Blood or Loli Pedo Hearts players show up and try to run their side tourneys than smash. Smash is just so goddamn irrelevant. What’s next, Halo tournaments?
Is the game even out yet? (EDIT: Oh, March.) Where are we gonna get the TVs and Wiis, is there really enough following to just advertise about it and voila get the smash people to bring their own TVs, Wiis, and run their own shit. I don’t know how many big tourneys you’ve been a part of, but this sounds disastrous. I like the idea behind it, but we have such a hard time running our own shit on time/right, I don’t know WHY we’d throw in another scene on the side, that none of us like. To me, it’s just asking for conflict, time/space consumption, etc.
It looks like we’re already shooting for more games than random select down in portland… which I’m not sure if you went to, but everything ran like 3 hours too late. As far as I know, we’ll be working with less space (I doubt we’ll get a hall that big?) too.
I don’t see any reason why smash should be treated like another type of game. People are talking about it like it is MineSweeper or something. It is just another fighting game and there is a huge scene for it. I think we should at least give it a chance. If absolutely no one wants it, then I am fine with leaving it out. Any concerns like “where are we going to get the TV’s” can be said about any of the games and systems. As far as where we get the Wii’s, I think it is easier to find Wii’s for Smash then it is to find PS3’s for DR. No hate on DR, but that is just putting it in perspective. I am also not suggesting that we just split the room in half and let them do their own thing.
Eilas- Don’t worry, I have lots of experience planning huge events with tons of people and I have worked a few big tourneys (80-100 people) so I know how they generally work and can go crazy. I have also been talking to the guys from Random Select about how their tournament was run. Have a little faith. I am only throwing out suggestions. Logistics come later.
I am for only doing 6 games officially. All others can be side tourneys, but 7 games just feels like a lot more time and planning than 6 for some reason.
There are some decisions that just need to get made without others input just so things can happen, but I want to go by people’s opinions as much as possible whenever we can. Otherwise it really isn’t a Northwest Major Tournament, and this won’t happen without everyone else helping. So if everyone is against smash, then it won’t be in.
I am amazed that DR and VF5 are in a dead heat. I am more pro VF5, and I think it will be easier to do a tourney for since 360’s are easier found then PS3’s. I don’t play either (yet) though, so it doesn’t really matter to me which goes in. Just my thoughts.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Smash scene has its own fairly frequent tournaments, so its exclusion wouldn’t be depriving the players of events, whereas, being a very time-consuming and big (scene-wise) game, it would be depriving this tournament of a lot of space and time were it to be included.
Hi BrentoBox.
Add me to the list of supporters for Melty Blood.
As for Deezo’s comments, I think he said that just because he knows I like the game, hehe.
Besides players from Portland, there are some other NW guys with interest in Melty… I can ask them to post in the thread if you like.
Other than that, I just wanted to say, choosing games seems like it’ll be pretty tough. I think Marvel and CvS2 should be included for certain… even if the cvs2 scene has been dead for a while, back when we still held tournaments at Lanwerx it always had a good turnout. 3S became more popular at some point so I’m assuming it’s going to get a lot of votes as well.
Edit: Forgot to mention, concerning Portland’s “Random Select” turnout for various games, I don’t think it’s a good representation of what the actual scene is like over here. So regardless of the turnout for guilty gear and/or melty blood, I think it’s important to place more weight on the kind of feedback you get from the community.
While I agree with Veteru that the opinion of the community should outweigh the turnout at RS, I still say the statistics are worth noting:
CvS: Mid 20s? I don’t remember the exact number
Tekken: 14, right?
ST: Also mid 20s.
GG: Highest turnout of any game at around 30, very slightly beating out 3S.
3S: Also around 30
Marvel: Lowest turnout of official games at something like 11?
Melty: Ill-publicized side tournament, nevertheless had 10 entrants.
Granted, there’s the issue of the Marvel players not traveling and such, but the same can probably be said of a lot of the WA players of all games, since the actual signups didn’t reflect the number of players that signed up tentatively on the website (For one, 3S should have been at least 6-8 players bigger than it was). So while I don’t honestly think, for example, that GG actually has a bigger scene over here than 3S, or that either are as big as Marvel necessarily, the turnout is at least worth noting, as it’s a better indicator of people’s willingness to actually attend than a noncommittal poll on the internet.
That, and I agree with the sentiments that Melty Blood isn’t taking up setups that are needed for other games, and that along with the at least moderate interest in the game makes me think it probably warrants inclusion.
That is a great point. They do have a lot of their own tourneys around.
Thanks. Sorry for the harsh reply before. I kept editing it after the intial frustration wore off and I decided I sounded like a dick.
I actually have the turnout for all the games at RS that I got from Hellsap. Here it is.
Hellsap-
*attendance was around 60-100, we didnt get an exact count -
cvs2 - 22
3s - 22
gg - 27
mvc2 - 8?
mbac - 13
tekken - 20-something
kof - 16ish?
And I know there was very little overlap between gg+mbac/tekken/snk/capcom stuff.*
I haven’t been considering the turnout to much at all. From what I gather, there is a good difference in the scene’s between Portland and Seattle.
Predicting turnout for the games isn’t that important in determining which games will get played. It will be pretty imporant in considering reservation times and how we construct the brackets, but as for deciding which games to play I think we will just go by our general knowledge of our scene, the poll, what we hear on the boards, and just what we feel people want to play most.
i think everyone who entered 3s entered at least 1-2 other capcom games, don’t generalize capcom as stuff when it had the highest cross over rate. especially when your talking about crossing over players.
with that said.
i feel that if it is with in the time constraints any tourney that is 8 or less should be round robin just so people get there money’s worth.
MVC2 had 12 people. Anyways… MVC2 and ST have the largest scenes in Seattle, followed by 3s, Tekken, and VF5 in the same size. I don’t know how many people realize it, but people sit around for half an hour waiting to get through the rotation at Zach’s for VF5.
My suggestion for Marvel: Make it the latest tourney. Most good marvel players are flaky and appear late at night when we’re halfway through the winner’s bracket, then go straight to Poker. Granted, this is an exaggerated generalization, but quite honestly, players like Dan (show up early, beast, stay late) and Nolan are uncommon.
ST: same time slot as Marvel. There is surprisingly little crossover between the two, and yet the scenes are inexorably linked together.
I think that if VF5 is included, so should be Tekken. And no Smash. That’s another system to bring, plus Wiimotes that can easily be stolen, plus sensors to set up on the TV, etc. DON’T DO IT.
As much as I like Smash, I don’t think it’d be a good idea to have it as part of this tourney, mainly because they have their own group to do stuff. Now, on the other hand, the Smash club people all seem to be a really nice bunch, and probably would chip in money to help funding.
And also, with Melty Blood, I think there’s probably legal issues with that. I mean seriously, how many people do you think actually have a legit copy of that to run?
