Northwest Majors '09 - Saturday, August 22nd- Landmark Convention Center, Tacoma, WA

Sweet. See you guys then.

Hey this is on my birthday…Can you guys like have a birthday cake for me? Man i really want to got to my first event but my wife is giving birth that week…

Thinking about starting a new and definitive thread for this. Mostly just because the second post in this one is such a cluster fuck of now irrelevant information, but I don’t want to erase it. I’ll do it once I get more info nailed down and have something to really post.

Probably leave this one as just the venue thread, so we can check it for next year and not do all the work all over again.

Alright, so here’s what I’ve got so far.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like this needs to be a two day tournament. I am going to call tommorow to see if the rates for Sunday’s are lower, although 2,000 a day is pretty low already. A tournament with a 300 person attendance could pay for itself if it were 1 day, but I don’t think 1 day would work out. A sponsorship would be more of a neccesity for a 2 day tournament. A 2 day event could allow for a lot more games, bigger attendance, a day for finals, special events, more casuals and get-to-know-people time and just a better tournament in general. Starting to really feel it on the 2 day possibility.

Things People Want for the Next Major- This is a lot of paraphrased things that other people have written.

  • A way to keep the tournament area cool and well ventilated would improve the overall experience for everyone.
  • A video trailer
  • Some kind of special video presentation at the tournament. Something with nicely edited tournament footage, player interviews, trash talk, etc.
  • More structured layout for casuals.
  • Make it a two day event to have special events (ala FT10s, team tourneys, etc). With it being two days, people would also get to socialize and have more time for casuals/money matches. Being a two day event could lure people here from outside of the NW.
  • Have marquee matchups on the big screen for each respective game.
  • Be nicer to strangers because we may never know if it’s some random writer for a website or something.
  • Head to Head setup for finals. There have also been arguments against this.
  • Hot announcer chicks with sexy voices
  • Number the TVs that are being used for the tourney. This would help out tremendously with organization, since you could tell people over the intercom who and where they need to play.
  • More Room (taken care of).
  • A DVD made after the event (possibly to be sold), with a trailer, etc. It can be as crappy as the B3 video hosted on Preppy’s site, that’s the kind of thing you watch drunk with your friends later, it’s so much fun.
  • More cameras so that matches beyond just the finals can be online
  • A station or table where you could “check” equipment in and out, so you wouldn’t have to worry about getting jacked
  • Someone to announce the matches that know’s about each respective game and likes to talk shit
  • Intros for top 8 players AND intro songs
  • Name Tags
  • Short videos explaining some of the basic stuff. A tutorial video that breaks down the basics of the games.

Games- This really depends on how many days we do it for. I think we could fit 8 into a 2 day event comfortably, along with a special event of some sort. Talk about this more in a bit.

That being said…

Special Events- Any ideas? Special events seem like such a great way to give your tournament an identity. It would be really great if we could come up with something we could be known for (ex. Mikado Random Select Style from Mikado tournaments). Pablo Basillio’s Hardbody Challenge seems like it could work, but I’m not sure what the hell it would be. I think Keith brought this up last Spring.

It would be great if the special event was something everyone could participate in, like a giant Single-Elim Mikado Style Random Select Tournament for a specific game (maybe remix or SF4.) If we were still behind on cash, we could possibly make it a donation tournament and ask for 2 bucks to enter. That could either be more reason for people enter or less, depending on how charitable they were feeling.

Get back with more info tommorow.

I vote an all Dan SFIV tourney as the special event.

The Pablo Hardbody Challenge? I wouldn’t even know what that would be, but it sounds tight as hell. Does the winner drink and the loser does 50 push ups? There is probably a submission wrestling match in there too.

Love the idea of an SF4 Random ass tourney. What you should do is have people donate $1 to enter or $2 to be able to pick random twice (if they hate their first choice) and $3 for 3 random picks per match (3 being the limit). That way you have a bunch of scrubs paying $3 to “help their chances” when in the end a $1 high-skilled player will obviously win it.

You don’t think a pro would want to spend an extra $1 to guarantee not having to play as guile, or el fuerte, or some other specific character they hate? :S

Also, it seems like an extra pick could be used to dodge counter characters, unless the random picking all gets done before they see their opponent’s character.

Not hating - random select would be cool. I just think there are a couple issues to be considered first, so it doesn’t leave a bad taste in peoples’ mouths.

Well I mean, it’s supposed to be more “gimmicky” instead of a serious tourney so I honestly don’t think the high-skilled players would care that much but I may be wrong in that assumption. Either way, it would help garner more money and you can’t go wrong with more money. Maybe a beer tourney where after every win a player must drink a beer thus ensuring (depending on how many people/rounds there are) that the championship grand final is full of drunken goodness haha. Ok, I’m done.

Pablo Basillio’s Hardbody Challenge sounds fucking awesome

Something that I always thought would’ve been like a tight ass idea, would be to have like a combo contest which was ran like a slam dunk contest. Like you have like 6 dudes competing with a few judges on the side. Each player has a certain amount of time to try to execute their combo and shit. This would be great for Marvel. Encourages people try to come up with some new shit.

If a random entry contest is done, I would personally rather that players were allowed one entry for $1 and two entries for $3, but that nobody gets to dodge the random select in any way.

You could have a low-tier marvel event, although trying to define ‘low tier’ is certainly opening up a can of worms. Nothing wrong with arbitrarily banning tons of characters, though.

Anybody here watch Redbelt? If you haven’t go see it…

Anyway what they did in the movie was have 3 marbles…2 white & 1 black

If you pick black you get a certain handicap…In the movie you get one hand tied, two hand tied, blindfold…haha imagine trying to do fireball with your forehead or trying to play with your feet…But seriously maybe some handicaps like the following:

  • Have to Random Select
  • Opponent pics player
  • Auto lose 1st round
  • Your damage set to one level lower
    etc…

Players choose handicap out of a hat or spinning wheel if someone can make one…

Winner will get a redbelt…

How bout we run back that 5 vs 5 in ST, but run it for HDR…

People were also very excited about doing a video trailer or promos for the event. We could start brainstorming things for that.

  • Start with a guy who obviously sucks at SF and show him losing hard. Pan to show him losing his house, his wife and his job because of it, and living alone on the street wailing in lemant. > “Don’t let this happen to you. Play Street Fighter.” End with Northwest Majors.

Haha I like it. You could do a whole serious of promos with guys sucking at different things. Like a guy about to hook-up with a girl, goes into the room and finds out it’s a dude. Then end with “Don’t let this happen to you. Play Street Fighter”. Northwest Majors haha. Good stuff.

PICTURES!

I figured it was hard as hell trying to find a time for people to come see the venue, so I just went and snapped some photos of the imporant areas.

Hopefully everyone can get a good idea of what the room really looks like and how the event will go. I tried to include some notes to illustrate how the room flows.

The idea is to have the whole bottom floor be tournament, and the middle and top sections be a mix of casuals and anything else we want. Any other suggestions for tournament layouts are more than welcome. We do have total access to the balcony.

I also have a few more photos, but I can’t upload them till April (Met the Free Account Limit).

That stage is gonna make the finals look hella epic. Good shit Brent.

Niiiiiice

Edit: Never mind. I put down an equipment list but its fairly big, and we can’t do much about it right now. I’ll just save it to a document and put it up later.

Hey Brent, some things I want: Team Tourney’s… lol.

EDIT: That place looks epic Brent, GJ on the find!
